Kare Kano DVD (left) vs. LD (right)
The LDs I bought are seemingly brand-new despite being listed as used. Unfortunately, that didn't stop them from being slightly rotted.
I got these Tokimeki Tonight tapes hoping they would have better audio quality than the modern releases of the show. The audio quality is indeed better... but totally different! All of the line deliveries are different, with some characters even being played by different actors!
HQ clip from the Yoshinori Kanada episode of Zukkoke Knight. This series previously only had one Japanese release, a 1984 VHS with 2 episodes, but most of the series was recently added to Amazon Japan (albeit with the catch that 3 episodes are missing and 2 are corrupted.)
Every home media release of Cobra has suffered from poor quality optical audio. These beta recordings of the original broadcast are a huge improvement!
Received a very heavy package in the mail today with SVHS and Hi-Band Beta VCRs, 2 LDs, and a bunch of Beta TV recordings. The Beta recordings are almost all anime this time around (Space Adventure Cobra, Urusei Yatsura, Dirty Pair, etc.)
Finally managed to obtain a tape I've been searching for for years! It's a 1982 Toei Animation TV special directed by Rintaro with character designs from Etsumi Haruki, the creator of Jarinko Chie. I plan to do a new capture once my VHS capture hardware is ready again.

Genma Taisen LD
Initially picked this up for the lossless audio, only to find out the LD also has a different aspect ratio than the Blu-ray. The LD is 4:3 open matte while the Blu-ray is cropped to widescreen. Will do a proper scan when my scanner is up and running again.
First capture with the new VHS setup is my Madou Monogatari promo tape, featuring a 2 minute anime and 1 minute of early gameplay. This tape really needed a better rip, since the current rip was captured over HDMI and at the wrong framerate. Will throw it on archive soon.

Keio rip should be uploaded by tomorrow morning. I'm too lazy atm to make an encode, so I'll be posting the lossless video output from VHS-Decode as well as the raw RF.
Got bamboozled: the Type C tape I thought contained an episode of the Okama Report OVA actually contained an hour long recording of the raw footage used for its brief live action segments. The majority of the footage isn't used anywhere in the OVA; expect a full upload soon.
How many laserdiscs came with bonus software discs? First I saw it with floppies with Sol Bianca, then recently a CD-ROM with the Jarinko Chie movie... now I'm curious.
Interesting to see how these old Japanese TV broadcasts of shows and movies differ from their home media releases. While the LD and VHS releases of Penguin's Memory are cropped to 5:3, this 1989 broadcast uses a full frame transfer.
Neat how vhs-decode sometimes allows you to see text that would normally be obscured in the VBI. Spider-Man's VHS has text in the corner saying "DELUXE90" along with the closed caption data throughout the entire movie.
Shizukanaru Don: Yakuza Side Story
Did a much-needed re-rip of this obscure TMS OVA based on a 108(!) volume manga. The only existing rip of this OVA was previously done by ARR and has super blown out video and audio in typical ARR fashion. See the difference for yourself:
Muteking's BD remaster looks nice, but it uses low quality optical audio. For NoraInuG's releases, I'll be syncing the high-quality audio from the SD releases to the new HD source. It's a great series, and I highly recommend checking it out!
NoraInuG has just recently begun his English fansub for Tondemo Senshi Muteking:
I'm only assisting with QC for now but I'll be tweeting out episodes here as they're released on Nyaa. I really want people to check this out, it's a fun show!
Lumivision's USLD of the Lensman movie uses a radically different transfer from the JPLD— the colors are entirely different, and the USLD is open matte instead of widescreen like the JPLD. It's also dual-audio, but has no subtitles.
Digging out my CX card again to mod it with a clock and audio inputs. I like using the Domesday Duplicator for tape formats, but the single RF input forces you to record audio and video separately and sync them manually. The mods will avoid both issues.
Got an English LaserDisc of The Mystery of Mamo. The left audio channel contains the Streamline dub, and the right channel contains an M&E track. I don't believe an M&E track was included on any other release.
Got the German Reporter Blues DVD set, which seems to be the only DVD release for the series. Unfortunately it only includes the German dub despite it being an Italian-Japanese coproduction, but the video quality is better than what's currently online.
Clip from the compilation movie of the 1970s Huckleberry Finn anime. The TV series was never released on home media in Japan after its initial broadcast, which is why there's no Japanese rips. The compilation movie was given a limited VHS release but was never ripped— until now.
Here's another title that never had its LD release ripped, Koiko no Mainichi. As with many Nippon Columbia LD releases at the time, it was released in limited quantities and didn't get a full release on LD. The side with the episode on it is strangely mislabeled as the dead side.
Screenshots from Zero Tester's HD remaster. This was released on DVD 5 years ago, but it wasn't available in full HD until it was added to Amazon Prime Japan earlier this month.
I wasn't expecting the LD release of Miyuki Forever to be any different than the DVD release content-wise. It's actually more than twice as long as the DVD, and it looks a lot better to boot!
Devil Hunter Yohko: Super Music Clip (live action segments) BD vs. LD
Q-TEC went through the trouble of re-editing the animated segments of this for the BD with HD scans, but the live action segments were handled quite poorly, being poorly processed and decimated.
@cabbusses
I found out these tapes are just "recap" tapes, so they only cover part of the show. There are cases where a Japanese show does get an entire redub though, like with Marvelous Melmo
The most notable things I've come across are dramas without home releases or rips at all. But I need to save up for a new hard drive before I can rip and upload them...
The reason I'm capturing this tape despite blu-rays existing is to test the abilities of vhs-decode: the mastering is excellent, and the SNR is very high.

@MMcflies
Toho only ever released two volumes, so only 4 episodes are covered. Not sure what the audio on the original broadcast was like.
Ripped my Ojisan Kaizou Kouza tape. I initially tried to rip the tape over a month ago, but my old VCR had too much trouble playing it. The best rip available online (left) was upscaled for some reason, so it's nice to have it at native res.
