A former WSU beat writer for The Spokesman-Review, I now cover all Spokane-area sports online with A Grip on Sports. Occasional media critic and podcast guest.
Nick Rolovich announced yesterday he's not vaccinated and he's not going to attend Pac-12 media day in person. The platform exploded. And not just from WSU football fans. The president weighed in as well. Our daily column, with links.
Yesterday was awful. My best non-human friend left us after 15 years of filling our house, and hearts, with his special love. I’m writing about Yogi this morning, which helps, but wanted to share a few pictures here. (1/3)
I wish I was keeping track of how many times WSU has been referred to as Washington tonight. If I had a dollar for every time it’s happened, I could buy a handful of Lotto tickets and maybe win a few million.
Pac-12 officials at their best. Ryan has helmet knocked off with an illegal hands to the face. No call by center judge, who is on top of the play. Ryan has to leave. Replacement holds on next play, center judge throws flag.
According to Jon Wilner, Kliavkoff hears from Colorado in a text the school is leaving for the Big 12. Soon after, the Pac-12's attorney tells the school its spot on the board is forfeit. And then Kliavkoff's lawyer argues differently in Colfax. Weird.
Another day, another person leaving the WSU athletic department. We're not sure, however, if everyone in Pullman is sad to see Pat Chun head across the state. Our Wednesday column, with links.
Over the years I've had conversations with former WSU football players about Mike Leach. And what they had to say didn't seem to jive with his public persona. In my first story for
@TheAthleticFF
I decided to delve into that contradiction.
A new family member in the Grippi household. Meet Donut. Got him at the Humane Society today. He enjoys car rides and peeing in the basement. One of those I’m good with.
When someone dies so young and so unexpectedly, the emotions are hard to deal with. Everyone connected with WSU is dealing with that today. Our daily column, with the usual sports links.
Micheal Reed just won the worst foul call award for 2021. Offensive players jumps sideways and backward to initiate contact -away from the hoop. That’s a call that has to be explained.
The game comes out of a timeout and Santa Clara is shooting two free throws for a technical. They have played almost a minute and nobody on the broadcast has explained what happened.
If you have a habit of turning on the radio in the afternoon to listen to Dennis Patchin and Rick Lukens talk about sports, you'll have to break it. Cold turkey. They lost their jobs. Friday was their last show. Our daily column, with links.
If you just looked at the rushing stats, you might dismiss Wazzu's running back tandem. But there is so much more to these two. They are such a key component to what the Cougars do offensively. And they are also fun to talk with. Boobie Williams' laugh is infectious.

Did you just give someone marriage advice Ryan? That just about completes my 2021 Divish Twitter bingo card. I just need “Ryan compliments guy over ballpark proposal” to win a $300 toaster.
CJ Elleby is having a pretty darn good year in Pullman. Maybe the best a freshman has had at WSU. Not bad for a player who didn't even sport three stars when he was coming out of Seattle's Cleveland High.
I understand the feelings abt this. It’s one thing to call a team the wrong name, it’s quite another when you call them their in-state rival. That was bad & I hope it never happens again. Frankly I’m embarrassed (and should be) & hope I’m allowed back on campus again!

The best gift a Spokane child can give their father and mother? How about coming over and shoveling their driveway on a day like today? It happened here. It’s a Presidents’ Day miracle. (Actually he does it all the time. What a kid.)
It took until early afternoon, but the opening of the Christmas gifts is finally over. Always enjoyable but not ranked No. 1. The top seed, every year, is the gathering of family. So blessed. And, as always, thinking of those who are no longer with us. Merry Christmas all.
To all my loyal readers out there - ya, you and you and, yes even you over in the corner - I’m not posting at the usual time tomorrow. I’m going to put on my armor and visit Costco during the over-60 time. My column will either be early or really late, depending when I wake up.
After 15 eventful years and more than 200 consecutive flag-waving shows, ESPN’s "College GameDay" is coming to Pullman.

There is no magic sauce for earning a college athletic scholarship. But there is one key ingredient. Hard work has to be part of the recipe. Our daily column on Blake Buchanan's commitment to UVA basketball. We also celebrate the Fourth with links.

At a movie near UCLA one night in the late 1970s, my sister fell asleep and began snoring. The star, Dylan Cannon, was sitting behind us. She got up, found the manager and had us kicked out.
So I tried to make sense out of the chaos – in a good way – in Pullman this morning. The bottom line: GameDay might as well ride off into the sunset. It's never getting better than this.
This may be our longest "A Grip on Sports" ever. Thankfully, it is Sunday and there is a little more time to leisurely ignore it. But if you want to read what we have, here's our daily column. It includes quotes, links and more.
There was unbridled joy in the locker room after Washington State's win over BYU last night, a win that sent WSU to New York for the NIT semis. We liked the singing. Doffing the shirt? Uh, not so much. Our daily column, with lots of links.
Replay showed Jason Huntley did not fumble. Ball came out when elbow hit ground. Should have been second down at 1/2 yard line. Wonder why it wasn’t reviewed?
Doubting WSU's football fortunes is an annual event that needs to be thrown into the trash bin. Mike Leach has built a program with staying power. Our daily column, with links.
What Central Valley's basketball team accomplished this season is unprecedented. It may never be duplicated. And it deserves praise. Our daily column, with links.
We're back at it with a list today. This one covers the past 40 years of women's college basketball in the area, back to even before the NCAA got involved. The accomplishments are many – and varied. Our daily column, with links.
Like Led Zeppelin, we rambled on today, banging our head against the wall that is the Pac-12's demise. All it gave us is a headache, which we are sharing with you in our column. Oh, we do have a few links.
Winning would have been better – much better – but a decimated WSU team at least kept battling in their Sun Bowl defeat. Which seems an appropriate way to finish 2021. Our daily column, with links.
@StoneLarry
As someone who spent four decades as a catcher in baseball and softball, I couldn't disagree more. You have to record the out. If the first baseman drops a throw, the runner is safe. If a player drops a fly ball, or a tag, same principle applies. It is consistent.
I turned on CBS Sports at 3:48 p.m. for 4 p.m. Washington State game. USF and Western Kentucky playing. 10 minutes, 52 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Wait, what? I thought games were supposed to be faster this year. Wonder when the Cougar game will be on? Me too.
I have a Carl Reiner story that I hold very dear to me. I figured I'd share it today, on the day of his passing, because I hope it will bring some other people some joy the way it does me.
Power still out. That means no air conditioning. I have stripped down to gym shorts and a T-shirt with the sleeves ripped off. Used one sleeve for a headband. Am now fashioning a spear out of a broom handle. Civilization may just break down. Never know.

There are many reasons why this year's WSU football team is among the school's all-time best. At least 11, actually. Last night's Alamo Bowl win over Iowa State illustrated many of them. Our column, with links.
OK, time to sit down and watch my favorite Christmas movie. Yep, “The Godfather.” Hey, there are the scenes after Vito gets shot and everyone is Christmas shopping in the city. That makes it a Christmas movie. Ho, ho, ho.
The Cougars are 7-1. Again. That's two consecutive years. It's not unprecedented in WSU football history, but it isn't common either. We examined the best starts in the more than 100 years of Cougar football and tried to find some things that tie the recent ones together.
I have to admit something to the Twitterverse. I judge people by the way they use “apart” and “a part.” Does this (and only this because I know I fail in other areas) make me a bad person? Advise.
As the Cougars' latest football loss unfolded late last night, a couple of odd decisions down the stretch brought a few awful phrases to mind. And made us look up one statistic. Our daily column for your Sunday, with a whole bunch of links.
Today's column is different. It's self-indulgent. Wait, that's not new. OK, it's about a buddy. One who came around before this medium existed. And was always more friendly. Our dog Yogi died Tuesday. If you can, find a canine friend like him.
When Kim gets ready to leave work, she sends me a very succinct text message. “Heading home.” The two best words in the English language. It is a hill I am willing to die on.
Sit down, enjoy a box of doughnuts and do your duty: Root for Spokane County's two schools playing today in the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Well, the doughnut part is mandatory. You can pick who you want to root for. Our daily column, with links.
Mississippi State will be Leach’s last job. It’s closer to home, it’s closer to his family. It’s a challenge. He likes all those things. And the barbecue is better.
This is why Ryan is so good at what he does. He cares deeply about the people he covers and the people he works for, the readers. When he fails, or even feels he failed, he is willing to apologize, to examine his mistakes and work to do better. That is professionalism.
I don’t know who needs this today but being grateful for what you have, while you have it, is so important. Watching Kim visit with her 90-year-old mother, seeing how happy both are together just puttering around the house, is just such a joy.

What is it your pop used to tell you back in the day? Be the change you want to see in the world? Sound advice. Mine used to tell me not to complain when others did what I did. Our daily column, with links.
@TheoLawson_SR
The last two WSU football coaches each won their only Apple Cup in their first year. Might mean Rolovich gets two in his first Cougar season.
I didn’t watch a single Twins game all season. And yet, on October 4, I am all in on them winning. Why? Could it be I am a victim of some anti-Yankee disease? Or am I just a good American? Wait, I just realized. Those two things are one in the same.
Mike Leach's passing had us thinking back to our interactions. Some of them were short, some long. All interesting. Our daily column, with lots of links.
I've never been a big fan of SportsCenter highlights. Until last night. Our daily column, which not only covers a monster dunk but also puts a spotlight on tonight's GU game at Arizona. And, yes, we have a lot of links.
One of the more amazing stats Hank Aaron put up is his 3,771 hits. If you look at baseball's top 10 players in hits, Aaron has 280 more career home runs than anyone else (Stan Musial, 475) on the list. He wasn't really a home run hitter. He just hit the ball hard. All the time.
@GeoffONeil
I have a different take. As a journalist, it’s your job to research the issues before you say something on TV (or in print or radio or online). You may not agree with it, or you may. Either way, do the work. Or change professions.
How far should video review go in college hoops? And how long should it take if the goal is to get the decision right? That and more in our column this morning.
