The official X account for Varn Vlog. I don't fight your battles for you. Barbarian.Podcaster. Author. Poet. Teacher. Arm-chair Historian and Theorist.
I am tired of hearing about what you think would have happened if Sanders or Corbyn won or if SYRIZA hadn’t heel turned or other big rock candy mountain stuff. You live in the world you live in. People weren’t still crying about Jesse Jackson in 1996.
What if I told you nationalism is a disease and yet sometimes national liberation is necessary. Kind of like how radiation will kill you, but sometimes it’s worth a dose to kill cancer.
You believe in decadence because some people’s sex practices give you the ick becuase you’re a lonesome busy body.
I believe in decadence because of declines in infrastructure development, general & media literacy, over complex systems, deaths of despair.
We are not the same.
I rarely do this, but
@DanielTutt
goes above and beyond what is necessary as a colleague and a comrade. I want people to know this. What disagreement you may have with Daniel, and I suspect many people have many, he is honorable and patient.
The realization that there really aren’t adults in the room is finally hitting people. Hell, I have been saying it for a long time and the extend of it hit me.
“Rawls is one of the most influential and greatest men who ever lived”
Nobody, and I do actually mean nobody, runs a state or rebels against a state of the theories of John Rawls.
I have a few conditions but you guys won’t do them. Just stop giving any democrats money, stop endorsing without many means to protect or punish electeds, and marginalize all forms of tailism. Also update your membership numbers honestly. Develop a program. Until that, unserious.
I have lived in an "elected" military dictatorship with actual real secret police, I can tell you that if people think that is where they are heading, they would talk a lot less on curated media with relationships to the state. So either they don't believe it, or very foolish.
Well, while I am happy about Front Popular eking out a unity government, I am wary that this will end like the last few left-center unity governments do. I am amused however by rightists now saying that the “center will always side with left” — mirror world is funny.
The currently most unpopular president in modern history debating the priorly most unpopular president in modern history about who will be most remembered as most unpopular and one them sounds sleepy and other sounds like he is outright sundowning. I am on team doom even more now
In three years, Varn Vlog has done 267 free weekly interview episodes, around 500 additional youtube shorts, solos, and explainers, and 1000 patreon audio episodes (about 200 episodes of that unique material for patrons). I also have a day job.
My entire life I have been unimpressed with our political class. The older I got and the more I understood them, however, the more disgusted I got with them.
There are bad politics that are destructive and genocidial that aren’t fascist. In some sense it does matter, the term is already been stripped of its historical specificity. But politics without total social mobilization is fought differently.
Be careful shaming people publicly. I know this site algorithm encourages it, but some people make unnecessary enemies for very, very short term clout gains.
@BadSocialisms
Supporting or condemning multipolarity is like supporting or condemning rain. It’s a fact about the arrangement of great powers, what that ends up meaning says more about one’s politics than acknowledging that fact.
Notice he is doing it now when he can’t get it through congress. I mean he probably couldn’t get it through congress with the Dems held office either but this is too little, too late.
BREAKING WAPO:
President Biden is finalizing plans to endorse major changes to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks — including proposals for legislation to establish term limits for the justices and an enforceable ethics code, according to two people briefed on the plans.
There is a great chaos under heaven but so many of you are invested in dying institutions that you confuse them for democracy and try to duct tape them back together and call it freedom.
The number of people who laugh at me when I encourage self-discipline is one of the most concerning things about social media use as politics. It reduces all social movements to your curated presentation of your response to it as if that is inherently meaningful.
It's funny the number of people who try to lead a cancelation with "ex-prison guard." This is true and something I did when I was 19--and it turned me against prisons before I was even on the left.
So if it's Kamala, everyone's going to become her strongest supersoldier right? None of this lesser of two evils bullshit? No "holding her accountable"? You better become straight up propagandists.
I have been taken aback by the number of people who claim to be Marxists (or anarchists) who have asked why class collaborationism is bad. Then I realized they didn't really understand what it was. So an explainer is coming.
So today was a decent day for international left—although in few cases was it anything more than a coalition. That said, it seems like the right is becoming less popular in a good bit of the world. So all depends on what is done next. Too many people stop at the elections.
Honestly this was kind of the case when Obama authorized drone strikes on us citizens on foreign soil without trail but it is moved from de facto to absolute de jure.
Looking forward to future presidents just strangling people to death in the oval office and then the courts having to decide whether it was done "in an official capacity."
With what Senate could he possibly do this given the electoral map. He also could have done this in his first 100 days but even when the Dems had both houses they couldn’t do but one them and they let it lapse on their watch.
In the first 100 days of his second term he will:
- Expand Social Security and Medicare benefits
- Lower childhood poverty by making the child tax credit permanent for working families
- Raise the minimum wage to a living wage.
- Pass the PRO Act
- End all medical debt
- Reduce
Be more cynical about politics, but slightly less cynical about people. Misanthropy is generally either projected self-hatred and pathetic self-flattery.
As I have said, most reformists aren’t actually reformists but people tinkering around as party of order, most “radicals” are actually just asking for reforms, and most “democratic socialists” are mostly institutionalists.
Anglophone socialists need to think twice before they make claims to be "Struggling for power, not reforms."
Making demands of capital and the state are primarily useful when doing so organizes us as a class. Organizing as a class teaches us how to collectively fight and win.
Well the episode I did on the internal dynamics of Israel got called “Hamas propaganda” which is funny considering how it was mostly just reporting facts about Israeli opinion and political groups.
I am mad at both major parties in the US, and I think they should be punished, but I don't think you punish them just being passive. You punish them by building counter-institutions, and that is going to get harder to so as decadence creates chaos, so get on it.
I have now heard Cutrone say that the executive is effectively a constitutional monarchy off of a Nixonite theory and citation of Bob Barr. He considers this maintaining constitutional order, and his boys had the gall from 2014-2017 smear that I was "neo-conservative."
Self-improvement and cultivation is not something you should do just for yourself—you do it socially. For your loved ones, comrades, friends, kin, community. Self-care and self-discipline are one in the same. And you will need help, but you need to be able to help.
Let's also admit that even if Biden was cogent, he didn't make a good case for himself. Also, how have his handlers thought this was going to go? They obviously talk to him regularly.
Hard to believe that someone with 43% general disapproval and 37% approval with 20% of the population not knowing what she believes "has done more to POPULARIZE" progressive positions.
This is very disappointing. Criticize AOC if you want. But she's done more to popularize progressive positions than most anyone, and it's hard to imagine a more self-marginalizing act than implying she's not radical enough for us.
You know since I started covering academic articles word for word and checking sources for my podcast, I have discovered that even a lot of the academics don’t seem to have read what they are citing beyond a few paragraphs.
In the fall, I want to hold a series of discussions/symposiums on the meaning of various left-wing ideas and strategies and how people interpret them today. A lot of things are used without dealing with the contestation of the ideas or even knowing what they historically meant.
Honestly, I would prefer unions didn’t endorse any national level politicians but then what would the lobbyist we hire so many of as our rank and file numbers decrease do.
People seem surprised with political ideologies but clearly see in most religious types, almost no one reads the text, and most of the commentary is improv to justify whatever social biases people already have. Moving from the theological to secular ideological matters little.
So to the people using a video I made in December before the reports you are citing came out where I said that people should be careful with any information regarding sexual violence and that is common in war, but that IDF's reports were not be trusted as proof I am a Zionist/1
Before people get angry with me, I have been pissed about certain labor leaders endorsing Democrats as well. We need to be more consistent with people thinking this gets their rank-and-file much. Locally, unions have to play both parties, nationally both are traps.
I am a decadence theorist and a revolutionary pessimist, but I am not a misanthrope, a technocrat, or someone who hides in hauntological nostalgia or transhistorical invariance. I am finally writing a book about this. Then many of you can insult me more accurately ;)
Man, I wish I could claim to be the reason most of the communist sects that have targeted me specifically collapsed, but sadly, it has nothing to do with that. Generally, they are just deeply scandal ridden and burn through their membership. Although splits are accelerating.
The entire social media landscape has made accusations of narcissism beyond a clinical or social diagnosis meaningless. This entire landscape teaches one to view oneself as a brand.
My philosophy in a tweet, as things stand:
Ontology: dependent orientation
Epistemology: historical materialism
Philosophy of Religion: Historicism
Theology: none
Politics: socialism
Moral Philosophy: virtue ethics
Meta-ethics: Ethical Non-Naturalism and non-essentialism

Good thing productivity is not the mark of proletariat in and of itself is made clear by Marx multiple times but it still makes the original insult silly
Everything that happened in the last four years on the human level comes from decisions made in the late 60s/ early 70s and was codified and reified in the 90s and under the first Obama term. Events in history have winding and long paths, longer than the memory of media cycles.
Sigh indeed. I am one of the few people who thought this book was overrated at the time it was released, although it did popularize some anthropological data that Marxist ignored, it was also slip shot in categories etc
Liberals have to take responsibility that most of the advance of their fears of the state happened under their own watch, so telling people to vote for them is a lark now. Leftists have to live up to the fact that most of "anti-systemic" energy support part of said system.
⚠️Political earthquake in France. Le Pen’s hard-right party and allies have won a massive lead in first-round parliamentary voting. Early results from
@IpsosFrance
give the RN 34%. This means it could, possibly, win a majority in the 577-seat National Assembly on July 7th 1/
“We need to foster deep and complex thinkers.” Most commodified technologies do the opposite. We literally have seen decline in both general and media literacy since the advent of social media moving to video.
It's more like "I no longer can deny I am in danger or pretend it is just the half of the population that has negative partisan-ship against me that is the problem."
I have said this a thousand times: I am not a liberal; I am not a progressive, and any concessions to either are merely because I know I can't escape the larger society I live in.
Organizationally I am a big-tent communist, but there does have to be both a programmatic and theoretical minimum beyond mere use of words. Non-sectarianism should not mean being a sucker for things not in your or working-class interest.
@SatireRedacted
in so much that it is mirroring maga-communist tactics from infrared which pull significantly more from "revolutionary conservative" and European New Tradition and use Marxist-leninism for vibes, similar here with psychoanalysis. I have met her. She has gone through many phases.
It’s funny the amount of people who yell at me as if I am social democrat, I get called everything: “tankie,” “Trotskyite,” “ultra leftist,” “crypto conservative,” “anarchist,” “workerist,” “elitist,” etc. I call myself a communist or a socialist and leave it at that.
i'm sorry but how can you "imagine what can be, unburdened by what has been" while you also "exist in the context of all in which you live and came before you"?
Protests do not change foreign policy by themselves. I keep hearing even “anti-liberals” assert it does. I am not saying don’t do it, but you don’t end a massacre with a protest alone. It’s time to start thinking more realistically. We have had two decades of large protests.
I have been reflecting long and hard about people who see me as a social democrat since I often have them on my show to make critiques. What is clear to me is why, like many of these individuals personally, the differences in our politics are often unclear. That is on me./1
The responses I get on site indicate to me that for the entire 13 years I done left commentary, there is wild oscillation in same people between feeling powerless when they aren’t and claiming power that they don’t have. Over time it leads to wilder and more desperate chatter.
If you are a union staffer, thank you for your work but I don’t care about your opinion on the state of any union but one you are in as a wage-earner. I don’t listen to sells men and lobbyists for the state of their respective institutions either.
People in the US identify less with the capitalist political parties than any other time in recorded history. Meanwhile, right opportunists, both in the CPUSA/DSA & MAGAcommunists, want to tie socialists to the sinking ship to prevent us from forming a independent political base.
I got to say something I have said for literally 15-years, why is it that progressive pragmatists always end up sounding the most delusional about delivering their not particularly effective “reforms.” Perhaps this pragmatism isn’t pragmatic at all.
The amount of projection about both “the left” and the “working class” as already unified actor at this moment is bordering on eschatology. How many people who have completely opposed ideologies speak for “the working class”? Even acting for itself, a class cannot speak as one.
If you feel like you need to vote for someone tactically. That is what is. It is the least you can do in most cases. My issues aren't about the electoral bind most people are in and you aren't going to fix before November. My issue is the total lack of a long game period. /1
As a person from a mostly blue collar background as a child, I really wanted to believe that being white collar as my parents wanted for me was meritocratic, etc. Having worked all kinds of jobs from pizza cook to insurance auditor, editor, and then worked in education. /1
