Maine's secretary of state said she and her staff have received nonstop threats this week, including a swatting incident at her home Friday
Public officials should be free to do their job without harassment or threat of violence
A coworker told me two of my articles were the top stories for one of Maine's TV stations tonight, which is pretty cool. Big cheer for local journalism, because no one pays attention to the Lewiston schools or Androscoggin County towns like me and the other SJ reporters.
Hello all. I'm planning to join the Peace Corps this September. Things are not quite set yet, but I hope to serve in Madagascar as an agriculture extension volunteer.
I don't know whether this was the right ruling. But matter your political views, the way this "news outlet" is treating a state official right now is disgusting and dangerous.
I'm seriously proud of the teamwork from my Sun Journal and Press Herald colleagues today in covering Biden's visit to Auburn. By my count, we had seven reporters and four photographers working across no less than three location
I have two bylines in the Sunday
@sunjournal
. One reads "Special to the Sun Journal." The other, "Maine Monitor."
In September, it will simply be "Sun Journal." I'll be joining the newsroom full-time as their education - *whispers* and environment - reporter!
Back in 2021, I wrote about a Lewiston bowling alley's collection drive for homeless students, run by its former general manager.
Now, it's the site of a mass shooting, and Tom Giberti is recovering from 7 gunshot wounds he received saving a group of kids
Somehow, I got very very lucky with the Sun Journal and this wonderful man. Not only did he and his wife teach me journalism, but they've also become family
Since the first pandemic summer,
@vapaolella
has been a constant in the life of my newsroom at the
@sunjournal
and in my life. She's a close friend of my daughter, adored by my dogs and beloved by both my wife and I. She's full of energy & idealism -- and talent, too! 1/
This seems like a good time to remind everyone that none of Maine's newspapers are owned by these shitty out-of-state chains, and we really need to keep it that way.
Support the Maine Journalism Foundation and keep Maine journalism robust & local!
In a financial filing, the NewsGuild – the union representing more than 50 Gannett newsrooms – writes that CEO Mike Reed has “failed shareholders,” arguing that other newspaper companies are faring better.
RSU 4's School Board meeting ended before it began tonight. The chairman refused to call the meeting to order because an attendee would not wear a mask. After 10 minutes of tense back and forth, the chairman decided to end the meeting.
Feeling really proud of the Sun Journal/Maine Trust team for once again lowering the paywall so Mainers can access critical information during this emergency
Every newspaper/news station can pick up the heartwarming story about the Auburn dairy farmer and his cows. But only
@sunjournal
has this incredibly cute shot 🐄🐄🐄
Hiked the west side of the Grafton Notch Loop this weekend. Turns out sleeping in the woods by yourself can get spooky. I may have been Googling the likelihood of death by bear at 3 am on the first night, pocket knife extended
Two weeks ago, Dylan, 18, woke up outside, buried in snow.
At 15, Breezy ran away from his West Paris home for the last time.

Back when Paul Lepage was the editor then business manager of Husson University's student newspaper, The Spectator, the paper published several ads offering out-of-state abortions. Here's two of them from 1970 & 1971
The Sun Journal is the kind of paper that goes all out for a mass shooting, but also local high school championships. The sports staff somehow covered five games on Saturday, plus a softball torney fundraiser from an SJ alum. That's a hell of a lot of work for one day.
I AM BACK (in the Sun Journal)
Sunday marks the start of my new monthly column about life in Madagascar and the Peace Corps. I'm can't tell you how excited I am to share part of my experience here with you all back home in Maine.
If you read one thing today, make it this one: How the world sees a stricken Lewiston, by

@darynslover
I actively felt my soul heal a little after reading it.
I wrote an article about leading

Sun Journal letter to the editor from the chair of the Maine Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee regarding the removal of "Gender Queer" from Dirigo High School

It was the Morning Sentinel, actually. Please celebrate your local paper. When you credit the bigger paper 1.5 hours away, you take away an opportunity for the small but mighty MS staff to receive recognition for their hard work.
Living the journalism dream means I'm running across the John Jenkins bridge at 10 p.m. in search of information on a stabbing and nightime robberies. Love this job and this city
This guy is raising money to purchase a Sun Journal subscription for a local sobriety house. Thinks it'll help residents make connections with the community. Let's help him out
When my editor first gave me this assignment I thought it was going to be easy. It ended up being days of grueling work, trying to find the right words to describe John Bunker's amazing work. Thanks to all of the people
@sunjournal
who helped make this piece shine!
Went to buy a Sun Journal today at a local gas station, and I was lucky to get the last one. I get it. Today's paper (literally) rocks. Great articles, plus three local guest opinions.
Two things to celebrate:
1. Bates class of 2020 is coming to Lewiston for graduation in June, and I can't wait to see my friends
2. I just passed 6 months with the Sun Journal and they haven't fired me!
Lewiston Mayor: “...several of the councilors concluded that the best way forward was a moratorium on shelters. This is absolutely the wrong approach. Homelessness is not a crime and this is not who we are as a city.”
Went to Geiger Elementary this morning with Bates junior Alex Voight-Shelley to ask students the tough questions. We'll have that exclusive later tonight. Thanks to
@AndreeKehn
for the lovely shot!
I'm in South Central Madagascar this morning, off to visit my future worksite (the red dot) near Ambalavao. I'll spend five days in this village with no foreigners and no English speakers
The
@sunjournal
is giving my entire
@NESCom
print journalism class digital access this school year for the price of a single subscription. I love working for a newspaper that values education.
School officials were thrilled to learn Wednesday that the four-year graduation rate for the Edward Little High School class of 2023 will likely land above 90%, making it the highest rate in at least a decade.
The Auburn School District will require masks in all schools, beginning tomorrow. This action is in response to an outbreak at Edward Little High School. Previously, masks were only required in elementary schools.
Shame on
@approject
for appropriating the name of a Maine news organization to conduct a political survey with questions about welfare for illegal immigrants, CRT and gender issues. Maine Today Media is the owner of
@PressHerald
and
@centralmenews
.
There's a special kind of feeling when you get to help package a paper with your byline in it!! It's even sweeter knowing so many of the people who worked hard to put the Sunday SJ together. Love this paper & our team
Hey hey hey - Want to work for the soon-to-be largest newspaper nonprofit in the country? My role as the
@sunjournal
's education reporter is now up for grabs. Come work in our lively newsroom with some of the most passionate journos around✨
The Scranton-Times Tribune and the Wilkes-Barre Citizen Voice are two of the last functioning daily newspapers in northeastern PA, and they're about to be gutted.
My dad thinks I'm crazy for crying over this. It's worse knowing how many people just don't get it.
Today in local journalism: Some of the preciously few locally controlled newspapers in Pennsylvania just got sold to Alden Global Capital, and the family running the paper put their own shareholders on blast for selling out to Alden.
This
@MEStatePolice
press release is a joke. It's been over 24 hours and they're seemingly not yet willing to confirm the number people who are dead. Unless we count the file name?
A short thread about the importance of local journalism and
@sunjournal
:
Here's the press release from the State Police on the horrific murder in Poland on Thanksgiving. Read it.
If we didn't have local journalism, this is all you would get. But it's not the real story.
I am always so incredibly impressed by
@sunjournal
's photographers. Here's some stellar ones from Daryn Slover shot in Lewiston during the US-Iran soccer match
We've been working for months to celebrate this milestone! A huge shoutout out here to
@SteveCollinsSJ
, who wrote/digitized nearly everything in the A section. We wouldn't have had this incredible paper without him
Don't like her decision? Talk to your state reps and find something legal to do about it.
But of course, it's likely many of these threats are coming from out-of-state.
We really need to deescalate political violence in this country.
A year ago, I tentatively accepted a job building and teaching a two-semester print journalism course at Husson. And today, I submitted final grades! It's been great seeing these students grow as writers, though I certainly learned just as much from them.
Steve hates young women so much he helps mentor dozens around the world (and now, one in Madagascar!)
Steve and his wife do a great job at teaching young women not to take bullshit from anyone. Too bad Twitter is full of it.
3/ I learned from critics that I hate females and want “to knock back all the advances made over 100 years” and I'm also, they said, worried about losing my “alphabet mafia membership card.”
I know this is a straightforward article, but this might be the first time the BS has ever truly broken a news story. I couldn't be more proud of this team.
We are excited to welcome two summer interns to The Maine Monitor newsroom from
@BatesStudent
.
Ellie Wolfe (
@elliew0lfe
) will be an investigative reporting intern while Christina Leonard (
@christinaleo23
) will be a social media and outreach intern.
Brooks will give $15,000 each year for the next four years to the Lewiston High School track and field program through the Brooks Booster Club. Go Isaiah!
"We hope that the families of those killed and injured feel the deep sympathies and prayers of the physicians of Maine...But, we are sick and tired of platitudes which do not carry forward into meaningful actions."
In 2006, the candidates for governor were all running on platforms calling for the cleanup of Maine's rivers.
How did
@sunjournal
cover it, you ask?
The staff filled a tank with Androscoggin River water and added five goldfish named after each of the candidates
Two Bowdoin students have died this semester, one which was ruled a suicide and another who drowned while kayaking in Washington state this week. Sending a whole lot of love to the Bowdoin community
My new home in Madagascar dug a whole new toilet (kabone) for me. It's roughly 25 feet deep (the top part isn't finished yet)
Also, I think I'm going to like it here. There's mountains, mountains everywhere.
