What happened to European investments & assets when Europeans left the colonial world @ the end of #empire ? Hint: answer has to do with the expansion of #taxhavens in 1950s, 60s. Read about #Decolonization as a global movement of money: #twitterstorians

I wrote about the opaque world of shipping for @nybooks . The industry that moves more than 80% of global trade has massive regulatory, environmental, and labor law issues, all facilitated by tax havens and secrecy jurisdictions

How do we make sense of the fact that our present-day system of #offshore #taxhavens expanded significantly during the 1950s&60s, the main decades of decolonization? In this piece, I explore part of the answer to this question: a thread #twitterstorians

The #Sacklerfamily used #Swiss banks to hide wealth offshore as it was facing litigation. As @nils_gilman put it: just treat them like any other criminal #drug #cartel , seize all their assets, set up a fund to help the victims of the #OpioidEpidemic

🤮 It points to a broader issue that's part of the problem: the cult of the 'brilliant' (mostly white male) scholar who has 'fathered' generations of students now holding positions of influence. I've always been appalled by and suspicious of this sort of cult, often illustrated..

Let me share a quotation from one of the signatories of the Chronicle of HE support letter. When I first raised issue of Comaroff on social media, he wrote to me thusly: 'John is not a harasser, more a gentle seducer.' So, no, they didn't sign without knowing. Not all of them

Conclusion: looking at #decolonization as a series of economic and financial events opens up a global perspective on the end of empires that leaves much exciting work to do in a wide and diverse set of sub-contexts. I hope you'll have fun thinking with this! End.

The under-taxation of capital gains is one of the greatest and under-discussed injustices of taxation in this country and many others, with big implications for inequality. This would be so important if true.

The argument that offshore banking and tax havens somehow constituted a 'second' British Empire post-1945 to halt the decline of British banking may sound cool and appealing but is unfortunately untenable. Historians shouldn't repeat such speculative ('it appears that') claims ..
