I think of Shu's first meeting with Kanata a lot in contrast to how he interacts with Mika at that point. Shu compares Kanata to a siren/monster, but then when Kanata says 'Hey :( no I'm not :((' Shu realizes he hurt his feelings and takes it back right away.

Mika's love for Shu being a little creepy/unsettling is very important imo, it makes Shu's decision to accept Mika as his partner even more meaningful than it would've been if Mika was 'just' loyal and loving in a cute way.

Canonically Shu and Mika only performed their opera for Shu’s family, but the MV shows penlights being waved around. My only conclusion is Gramps got them for everyone and threatened that if they didn’t participate like a real audience, he’d cut them out of his will.

The way Nazuna believed Mika was as fed up with dealing with Shu's emotional problems as he was, while Mika believed Nazuna was as committed to supporting Shu until he recovered as he was, and they only realized how wrong they were when Nazuna finally left for good. :')

The funny thing about Mika fixing Shu is that he did it entirely by accident. Boy had no interest in changing anything about Shu’s behavior beyond ‘help him perform again’, and then when Shu did start being nicer to him he tried to get it to stop because it was too confusing.

It's so fun that biggest difference between Shu and Eichi, for all their many similarities and parallels, is that Shu does not consider the people he cares about as disposable, and will prioritize them over his ambitions if push comes to shove.

Shu's charm point is that he *is* trying extremely hard to restrain himself in his relationship with Mika and keep his wilder/more destructive impulses in check. And he still winds up doing shit like flying out to Japan when Mika doesn't answer his voice messages fast enough.

Most of Acanthe obviously reflects Shu's fear and regret over hurting Mika, but I like to think that the ending segment reflects a real fear of Mika's as well - that he can put out all this effort to be 'human' again, but he'll lose Shu anyway.

The only reason why Shu can get away with seeming like 'the normal one' in Shu/Mika these days is because Mika's just *so* openly affectionate and clingy he rarely gives Shu an opening to be as possessive and needy as he's prone to be.

Anyway, I think it's neat that Mika and Shu both interpret and relate to the grandfather and dollmaker's story differently. Mika's probably closer to the actual truth of what happened, because he's more objective and better at accepting the difficult and painful parts of life.

Maybe the reason Shu can accept Kuro's actions during the war but not Tsumugi's is because he feels like Tsumugi's friendship was insincere from the start? While Kuro's he does believe was genuine in their childhood, even if they grew apart and hurt each other later on.
