New pinned again whoops
HI! I'm your favorite resident J to E localizer bun! I've worked in nearly every creative medium. I'm a bun-of-all-trades, from translation to subtitling, fiction, manga, and non-fiction, games and editing!
Have an open project? DM me your pitch!
Cane got stolen and I'm crying
This is the worst AX I've had in years
It has a rilakkuma mascot on it so if you were in the exhibition hall and found it in the bathroom or food place pl 3a se return it to the Lost and Found
Reminder that Abe is absolutely a gross hawk who wants to do away with Article 9 and has an actual, honest to god political cult behind him so maybe don't do this whole "he's so cute" thing.
I'm more shocked that someone would steal a cane? It wasn't fancy or new and I'm not sure what the motivation was to do so. I'm not looking forward to dealing with my insurance, but I'll begin doing that on Monday with my PCP at the helm.
I think what a lot of people fail to understand is that mobility aids don't always help with the physical act of walking so much as they can give you a bit more physical stamina to do so. Which is why I use a cane during cons and travel the most under "normal" conditions
I wasn't ready for that response y'all! Thank you so much for caring. For now I'm probably not going the final day because dealing with this has been so draining. To their credit AX lost and found has done what they could which is not much.
Reminder that Abe was a fascist and Abenomics sent millions of women in children straight into abject poverty. Reminder that he was the head of Nippon Kaigi, a political cult, and part of the LDP, which is an ultranationalist party.
No nice things should be said about him.
Being physically upset about it only makes the pain worse so it's in my best interest to try to stay calm. I did hit my limit earlier today but I'm hoping that if I squeeze my PCP and insurance to replace it faster they'll do so.
If I'm able to get the right caffeine to edible ratio I'll attend tomorrow because I need to introduce myself to vendors. However, I probably won't hang around for the full day.
If anyone finds it and turns it in, I'll be on-site to do so tomorrow. Otherwise I need to rest, I think.
But thank you for the wonderful outpouring of emotion, I appreciate that more than y'all know
Cis folks - if you're wondering how to help your trans/nb friends and family today, this is the time when we need you to show up for us. Be our allies. If you're able, donate to trans causes, protest the latest disgusting moves by this administration.
But be louder about it.
I can finally announce that I'm handling this title! I can't believe I finally get to use the line "in a world gone gay". This series is an interesting one, and I can't wait for you guys to meet Ayumu and Kazusa next winter.
Brand-new license announcement! MY SECRET AFFECTION, a sweet shojo manga series by Fumi Mikami. After meteorites from space turned everyone on Earth gay, what happens when a girl falls for her childhood friend whoโs a boy?
Finally you can get your hands on a very important book (and one that ended up being one of my favorite projects overall)!
If you are interested in semiotic expressions or eromanga/hentai or you're just curious, please give this book a read! ๐ฅฐ
So I just saw this:
"Itโs worth pointing out that this is Hikaruโs first album since coming out as non-binary, there already appears to be confirmation of the use of โthey/themโ pronouns in the official press releases."
I'm crying I love this so much
One thing that I feel needs to be repeated wrt the current translation discourse:
1. Not everyone has the opportunity and privilege to learn in a classroom setting.
2. Sensory learning processes are different for everyone. Some have sensory processing disorders, like myself.
I was 34 when I finally broke into publishing.
I was 35 when I started translating games.
I was 36 when I subtitled my first anime, my first light novel.
I was 37 when I got my first non-fiction bk.
Now I'm going back to games. I just turned 38.
You have time.
I've been sitting on this news for nearly a year and I'm proud to say that I worked on this! This was my most challenging book to date, and the most satisfying. Thank you to everyone who worked on this with me. I owe it all to you!
Update: I managed to talk to as many vendors as possible, and a generous Twitter user is giving me their spare for now (though I'll be talking to my Dr tomorrow). Thank you all for your concern and kindness and I'll keep y'all updated
Okay but like
When are we going to talk about the importance of trusting your translators enough to allow them to do true adaptations that fit the locale (actual localization) and not literal translations in J-E loc?
No, really, when? I'd love to know. It's been on my mind.
LDP is also at the head of a lot of semi-fascist laws regarding freedom of the press, racism (especially with Koreans), and anti-LGBTQ everything.
This man is not cute. The LDP is not cute. Do some research.
We are excited to announce in February 2022, Peach Flower House will be releasing the first volume of Little Mushroom! More information is coming soon, so be sure youโre following for updates! ๐
-๐๐ธ
Let me elaborate on this. The LDP, Abe's party, is super right-wing and wants to dismantle the current post-WWII JP constitution. He wants nukes. He wants to return to the WWII Imperialist Japan model where the emperor is god.
The emperor that just stepped down us pacifist.
HEY, JP-EN Translators!
I'm going to be starting an open source SFX dictionary on google docs sometime soon. If you have any SFX you want to put on there, please start a list and send it to me when I open submissions!
For those wondering what's up with the name change with the new Ghibli film - welcome to the wonderful world of "licensor's orders" where they choose titles that are different for Reasons (tm)
Hey, everyone!
Genki was partially written by one of my translation professors at UCSB, and it was what I used to learn JP while there. It's the gold standard imo. If you want a good book series for years 1-2 of study, please try Genki! ๐ฅฐ
Hey y'all, Wonderland is out next month! This is the title I'm proudest of. Yukko and the rest of the cast have become very dear to me, and I hope you enjoy their odd journey as tiny tiny humans.
This is so weird, seeing these pages.
Wonderland by Yugo Ishikawa. A horror manga where all humans are mysteriously shrunken down into easy prey for animals. Within the first 20 pages, the main characters parents are gruesomely dispatched by the family housecat.
And this is where I'm about to be real with all of you.
For most of this trip I have cried every single night because I am so burned out, but can't afford to take time off. I love my work so much but this isn't sustainable. My job means nothing to people. And it's killing me.
Read a comment about loc quality vs fan translations about "having passion vs just a job" and man if there's anything I don't like having called into question it's my passion
I don't work these long hours because I'm paid a bunch or it's just a job. Piss off
So this dude,
@VoltixDaGoat
, is going around messaging pro TLs trying to get help for a pirate project.
Younger/newer TLs, don't take their deal. Shueisha and whoever else holds the rights to this series WILL prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, I assure you.
I realize that due to content that this might be a bit of a controversial title, but please keep in mind that I'm a queer person, and I'm handling this title. So please know that I'm handling this as carefully as possible.
@tlacuachamagica
Unfortunately we've done a lot of demonizing of the chronically ill and disabled folks here throughout covid thus far so I can't even say I'm entirely surprised? It's exhausting
Openly shaking and about to cry, because I just finished my first full novel translation (atogaki aside).
I never thought I would have a chance to do this.
I'm grateful to everyone who trusted me with this work.
@Imani_Barbarin
No lies detected. I'm not disabled (yet), but when I was working two jobs and I had chronic illness issues and needed surgery I nearly got fired as a result. This is so pervasive it's actually insane
#MeetTheTranslator
Hi! I translate the manga you haven't heard of yet! I'm currently looking for new projects and to branch out into games and anime. I got my N2 in 2017, and I plan to tackle the N1 in 2019. "Weird" stuff is my brand.
Have an open project? DM me!
Japan has a country family register, and here's more about it:
Giving a trans man a brand new register is rare. Are there any recent cases of other trans folks getting them? I haven't seen anything else as of late
My living situation has gotten worse. I hate to ask for help, but here we are. You can read more about what's happened in the link below.
Thank you for your consideration

Nippon Kaigi has over 2/3rds of the Diet as members. The whole lot are poisoned. Abe refused to acknowledge the Nanking massacre along with comfort women.
Do not say nice things about a man who was relentlessly racist and ultranationalist.
Seeing a whole lot of Bad Localization Takes on the TL as of late.
So why don't we start a good take thread?
My good take: had it not been for the awful localization job T*ky*pop did with their initial release of the Sailor Moon manga, I wouldn't have become a translator.
ngl seeing this announcement get ratio'd on the original tweet kinda hurts, but I went into this project as a queer (non-binary, leaning transmasc, pansexual) person with eyes wide open. I even wondered if I should take it at all. But the author is being sincere.
For those that don't know, a quick thread on localization in terms how the "final" product gets made.
First, let's review the basic process:
1. My publisher gives me a new book
2. I translate and edit, hand it off to my editor
3. Editors and proofreaders do their thing.

2 BL books have been designed as unhealthy by the Tokyo gov't this month alone: "Kusoanchi Love Destroy" and "Kono Koto Suru to wa Kiiteinai!"
According to Rito-sensei, even though we're only halfway through the year, 80% of material designed as unhealthy is BL.
There's even a short foreword in the book that the author wrote to ease their readers' minds, and I know it calmed me greatly. The topic of sexuality has been handled very carefully, and with respect. So I hope those who are skeptical about this series can take comfort in that.
If you want more information on the LDP's origins and the Nippon Kaigi cult,
@jakeadelstein
has done some frankly amazing work covering both topics in the past.
Since I'm getting some new followers, hi! I'm a J-E translator and Futekiya/Manga Planet's localization assistant monkey. I yell about the industry, activism, anime, emotional support kpop boys, and gacha games most of the time. ๐ฅฐ I'm non-binary, my pronouns are they/ them.
Hello
#TransCrafted
! I'm a non-binary masc-leaning Japanese to English translator! While my main wheelhouse is publishing (manga, fiction, non-fiction), I've also done subtitling, games, licensing sheets, & lectured on JP culture at UCSB. I love what I do, and I hope you do too!
@ahouse4all
@JoshuaPHilll
So I was moving last summer, right? One place on the westside (I think it was Culver City) deadass wanted 800 for a pet deposit on top of 75 a month for pet rent.
I hate it here
Before surgery later this week, I want to put up a quick thread of resources for JP language education!
If you're a student (or considering becoming one), what's one resource that you wish you had but can't find? Let me know in the replies here.
there's literally a genocide going on irl right now? Why are we getting upset over fiction? If you think Made in Abyss is bad content-wise, you're obviously not strong enough to handle fiction in general
Lrt just to add to the argument -
DUBBING IS AN ACCESSIBLITY ISSUE [BASS BOOSTED]
Regardless of how you feel of dubs vs subs, you need to remember that the availability of dubs means more people get to access the material! And I think everyone in loc feels that way.
Hey guys, pls don't put professional translators in a position like this. When you give us clearly pirated material and want help that can easily go up online ... yeah no, that's very bad. I'm usually happy to help new students but not like this.
Also this person is a minor. ๐
Translators, I don't think we talk enough about character-building development curves in series. What a lot of readers don't know that it takes time and energy to be able to correctly nail a character's voice over the course of a whole-ass series.
To make it abundantly clear:
If I see anyone harrassing colleagues and friends for doing their jobs as they're supposed to, you will be blocked and reported. I'm done. I'm tired.
Time for a late night announcement!
Happy to announce I've joined the
@futekiya
family as a localization assistant! I'm excited to finally get to work on some good BL projects!!
I see I'm getting some new followers. Hi! I'm your local friendly J to E translator! While my wheelhouse is publishing, I've also done work in nearly every creative medium including interpretation. I'm non-binary (they/them pls) and I deeply care about social justice.
5. Some also have ASD/Asperger's/other developmental delay issues that influence their learning. This is me, too.
6. This conversation needs to take into account all of these people, and all of these factors.
7. No one is lesser because they can't speak. Period. End of sentence.
And yes: thanks to a few people, I have seen the Bad Author Tweet. I can't believe I have to say this but:
- I do not condone what the author said
- I have no control over what they say online (and neither does 7S)
3. One thing I learned in neurolinguistics to expand on the above two points: everyone learns and processes differently. Some literally cannot speak because their brains won't let them. For others, it's a weakened muscle that they need to awaken.
4. Everyone has different needs.
I've lost followers for making my position on abortion clear. Did y'all think that the non-binary person with two reproductive diseases and one hysterectomy was actually gonna be pro-life? Lmao. Get fucked, pissbabies
Anyways this would be a great time to get or renew your subscription to Shonen Jump! Help Viz bring over more great material by supporting the official translations!
I don't know who needs to hear this right now, but here goes.
Don't ever feel bad for wanting to do a job that isn't considered as "important" like creative translation.
If it makes you happy, by god you need to do it. We don't have a lot of time left on this burning rock.
Remember, kids. This dude is in Nippon Kaigi and he's thrown in his lot with them.
So basically he supports a neo-imperalist age with tons of state-sanctioned racism :)
Neurodivergent translators and those that simply process differently exist, and it's hurtful to assume otherwise wrt to how people learn. For me, I have Asperger's. I was diagnosed when I was 14. This has influenced how I've learned language.
Last thing I'll say on this: Any literature pre-1947 is doubly hard to translate for modern learners because of the ๅฝ่ชๅฝๅญๅ้ก, or the kana/kanji reform that had been brewing for roughly 47 years within the Meiji/Taisho administrations.
Certain kana/kanji were eliminated. 1/n
Getting to see my titles officially In The Wild amongst congoers is.... I really almost started to cry. This has been my dream since I was little. And now it's real.
Just to reassure friends here - I'm okay but I'll be in the hospital until Friday at the earliest. They weren't able to use the robot on me so they had to do it old school, which is really painful. They also had to put stents in me, too.
Uh, I guess I can talk about this now? ๐ Anyway my debut translation with
@gomanga
, Fairy Tale Battle Royale, is out on October 9th 2018!
I'm currently working hard on it for y'all. I really do love this series, and I think you will too.

Just as general commentary: Japan is still very very much into physical releases and didn't even start using Spotify until 2015-16-ish (the US opened early adoption in 2010). This also goes for all media, but esp music. 1/X
I don't want to attack anyone, but I do want to make clear: everyone is different, everyone's journeys are different, and everyone's career paths are different. We must be understanding of these things, and offer to lift each other up, and offer resources.
