For the color transitions I use a color mixer, that allows me to pick from a gradient between two colors. It's called "color mixer docker" on Krita. I chose the lightest and darkest colors on a surface, and construct the transition from there. I highly recommend trying this tool!

The software I use is Krita, and the brush is from an Impasto brushpack by wojtryb. I've posted the link a few times, but here it is again! These are free brushes, and Krita itself is free and open source, so do consider trying it out!

I do sketch a general idea of my pieces before painting, and play with the lighting and colors during the planning part of my process. I also use reference material (photography for example) during planning, it really helps figuring out lighting and shadows

Some asked about how many layers I use: I usually like to keep all the painting in only one layer (color+sketch), but I do make new ones for different sections and then I combine them when I'm happy with the result. It's the same with the sketch layer.

I record my process with the built-in Krita recording tool. I used to record my entire screen, but I switched to the built-in option once it was released. This is much more convenient, as I no longer have to edit out all the sections where I do anything else on the computer.
