In 1971, Swiss men overwhelmingly approved a referendum granting women the right to vote in federal elections. It did the best in French- and Italian-speaking areas as well as in the major cities, and was closer in German-speaking areas.
Astonishing - thanks in part to gerrymandering, the NO vote won every one of Kansas' 4 congressional districts yesterday! In "the big 1st", the NO vote squeaked ahead thanks to college towns Lawrence and Manhattan.
The 1886 New York mayoral election featured a trio of notable candidates, with all three of the main vote-getters being remembered for something or other today. 🧵⬇️
Progressive congresswoman and "Squad" member Ilhan Omar was all but re-elected today after surviving another primary challenge from former Minneapolis councilman Don Samuels. She improved from her near-loss in 2022, here winning by ~13%.
In 1934, Nebraska voters voted on whether to shrink the state's legislature down to one house. Inspired by the Australian province of Queensland, voters throughout the state successfully created the first and only unicameral legislature in the United States.
Last week, Democrat Greg Landsman defeated longtime GOP incumbent Steve Chabot in OH-1. While Chabot did get a boost from being an incumbent, Landsman got some help from redistricting and from Tim Ryan's run for senate, keeping this district just 3 points to the right of 2020.
Georgia's Gwinnett County is a prime example of suburban realignment in the last couple decades. Just 20 years ago, it gave George W. Bush over 65% of the vote! But in the most recent presidential election, Joe Biden won the county by a good amount, for a monster shift of D+51.
One of the races that swung the most to the right in the midterms was the KY-6 house race, where incumbent GOP rep. Andy Barr faced off against pro-Russia, pro-China Democrat Geoff Young, who was disavowed by the KY Dems. Barr won every county, including Biden+19 Fayette County.
In 2022, Sharice Davids won re-election by a much larger than expected margin. While the Kansas GOP tried to gerrymander her seat by adding three rural counties and taking away most of reliably blue WyCo, overperformances across the board and good trends in JoCo gave her the win.
One of the strangest races in the midterms was the PA-12 house election. Progressive Democrat Summer Lee won against Plum Borough Councilman Mike Doyle. This wouldn't be that strange, except the retiring Democratic incumbent was also named Mike Doyle.
Utah, despite its relatively small size, is extremely gerrymandered. All four districts, which all voted for GOP candidates with margins of 25% or more, contain portions of slightly blue Salt Lake County, which has more than enough population for its own congressional district.
In 2003, prosecutor Kamala Harris was elected to her first political position as District Attorney of San Francisco. Despite being fairly unknown, she made it to the runoff with just over a third of the vote.
Bonus map: here's the PA Gov election by Congressional District. Shapiro won 11/17 districts, held the 11th and 16th districts to under 55% GOP, won both Allegheny CDs by over 60%, and outperformed moderate GOP Rep. Fitzpatrick in PA-01 by about 30 points.
If this is the last map I post on Twitter, so be it. It's the 2022 House election in NM-02, where former Las Cruces city councillor Dem. Gabe Vasquez very narrowly defeated incumbent GOP congresswoman Yvette Herrell in their Biden+6 district, securing all 3 NM districts for Dems.
Here's a fun project that I just finished. In 1912, a blue wave swept Kansas, giving the Democrats their only trifecta in the state's history. Here is the makeup of the House in the 1913 session!
Nearly 20 years ago, Laura Kelly made her entry into Kansas politics by defeating incumbent state Senator Dave Jackson by a margin of just 98 votes. Kelly would serve in the Senate for 14 years until being elected Governor in 2018, defeating Jackson another time in 2016.
There are many reason for this. First, and the main reason, is that Republicans have awful political geography in Nevada. It's almost the reverse Wisconsin, where instead of deep blue cities and light red rurals, Nevada has deep red rurals and light blue cities.
In the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, giving back the decision of abortion to the states, Kansas voters voted overwhelmingly to protect the right to abortion that currently exists in the state.
You can't talk about the worst cracks in gerrymandering without talking about Nashville. After being its own district in the 2010s, in the 2020 redistricting cycle it was cracked between three solidly Republican districts. Despite this, Davidson Co. as a whole voted 66% for Dems.
In 2010, U.S. Senator Sam Brownback was election Governor of Kansas in a landslide. In 2012, Brownback would sign into law massive tax cuts that backfired massively, hurting the KS economy and leaving him one of the most unpopular governors in the country.
The control of the Minnesota Senate and a DFL trifecta was decided by just 161 votes! Judy Seeberger won her exurban Twin Cities district SD-41 by just 50.3%, sealing a 34-33 DFL Senate and a DFL trifecta in Minnesota.
One of the best electoral overperformers in Kansas is Hutchinson Rep. Jason Probst (D). While many expected him to lose his 3rd re-election bid after being put in a Trump+15 district, he ended up winning by a slim but comfortable 5 point margin.
On Tuesday, Cook County commissioner Brandon Johnson was elected mayor of Chicago over former CPS CEO Paul Vallas. The more progressive-aligned candidate Johnson's win was surprising to many people, who expected the more conservative-aligned candidate Vallas.
Before Jackson Hinkle became a Twitter provocateur, he ran for office. Right out of high school, where he was an avid environmentalist and Bernie supporter, he ran for the San Clemente city council.
One of the viral videos of the midterms was of Linda Paulson, the GOP nominee in Utah SD-12, singing and dancing to her own song about how "Republican and Awesome" she is. Unfortunately for her, she lost in her Biden+10 district, and underperformed Trump.
Despite LBJ winning in a massive landslide nationwide, the suburban Johnson County, KS still backed Barry Goldwater by nearly 10%. Previously one of the most ancestrally Republican counties in the country, it flipped to Joe Biden in 2020 after voting GOP for over 100 years.
In Maryland, a state that has long been gerrymandered, Democrats won 7 out of the 8 congressional districts in 2020 despite winning less than 2/3 of the popular vote. In the closest race, for the 6th CD, David Trone still won by 20 points.
What are y'all's thoughts on this style of map to show congressional races statewide? They're pretty fun to make. If there's another state you'd like to see me map in this way, just ask!
