in my experience, it's the exact opposite: actually good materials make learning ~1-2 orders of magnitude faster, but they're exceedingly hard to find the effect's so strong that effective learning's dominated by the cost of searching for them; aka this tweet:

Educational materials (books, lectures) don’t matter. There are no good books, there are no good lectures. What matters is doing the exercises. When you’re at MIT you’re in an environment where you are encouraged to do all the hard exercises.
