Story. I had an opportunity to sit in a physical PC meeting of a major conference as a scribe. A paper was discussed. It received 5 Weak Accepts/Rejects; no champion; no hater. The decision was leaning to a rejection; the discussion lead commented, “it’s just too boring.” 1/5

@roopshasamanta @mboehme_ Yup! When your paper can get rejected for reasons like "no one is excited about it", it's really got to do more with who is on the PC rather than your paper itself. Maybe the folks who would have liked your paper declined the PC invitation for some reason.

Today marks the 7th Chinese New Year that I’m away from home; and I started my 3rd year of not seeing my family. It’s so tough that I somehow have to give up time with family to chase my dream in a foreign land. It’s something only foreign students know, and it’s almost cruel.

Going back to the reality. Now is the hardest part of a Dagstuhl seminar — processing hundreds of backlogged emails (many with “urgent” in titles…) and catching deadlines over the long night at Frankfurt Flughafen.

Why some graduate programs force recommendation letters to be sent in Nov and early Dec? It's hard to write thoughtful, substantive letters during the chaotic EOY period, and I wonder anyone even looks at PhD/MS applications before the new year (let alone making decisions).

What I would love to see happen: Universities band together to say: asking international students to take in-person classes just to stay in the US is a terrible idea, and we will not do it. It imperils our students needlessly. We will challenge this in court.

@DominikTornow Great question! We discussed it in a recent paper, The downstream is responsible for doing retries, which can't be done w/o the right upstream APIs. Silent semantic violations and state divergence are really hard to deal with by the downstream alone.

I just deleted my rejected NSF proposal today. I sent it for 2 years, both rejected for 1) it was incremental and 2) I didn't discuss "DevOps" (FML). It dies coz all the proposed thrusts have been published (at FSE'20; OSDI'20; ICSE'21) and engineered out (w/ all code released).
@ipapapa I don't mean to suggest that academic freedom never means you need to convince someone else (an agency, a benefactor) that our research is relevant to real problems. NSF grants are hard to get! but I've never felt my freedom to choose problems to be constrained by these concerns
