The Panama Canal is a major tourist attraction, allowing visitors to witness the immense scale of the Canal and learn about its history and operations.
Today, the
#Panama
Canal joins
@IMOHQ
in celebrating
#WorldMaritimeDay
. The Canal has worked relentlessly to implement a holistic approach towards a sustainable future that serves as a blueprint for maximizing carbon reductions across supply chains.
13 years ago today, the largest infrastructure project since the Canal's opening, the Expansion Program, broke ground for the construction of a new set of locks that would change global trade and the maritime industry for years to come.
The locomotives that operate in the Miraflores, Pedro Miguel and Gatun Locks assist the ships during transit. These powerful machines weigh 50 tons and operate with two traction units of 290 HP each.
With more than 9,000 transits of Neopanamax vessels, the main segments that use the expanded Canal are container vessels with 46% of the transits, followed by liquefied petroleum gas (25%), liquefied natural gas (12%) and bulk carriers. (9%).
The
#PanamaCanal
's strategic location makes it a vital link in the global supply chain, facilitating the movement of goods and enhancing global commerce. 🌍⚓
Today, Dr. Ricaurte Vásquez Morales was sworn in as the new Administrator of the
#PanamaCanal
and will lead the waterway through its next era of growth.
The
#ExpandedCanal
was key to positioning the country as the logistics hub of the Americas.
#DYK
that through its broader capacity, it enabled the Canal to accommodate 96.6% of the world’s containerships?
Within the last 20 years, the
#PanamaCanal
has been dedicated to protecting the watershed by developing technical assistance programs for sustainable agricultural production, such as for coffee and other products. ☕️
#Canal20TransferAnniversary
As the pandemic continues to impact the global economy, the Panama Canal will extend its relief measures to December 31, 2020, offering further support for the industry’s recovery.
This extension comes after continued dialogue between the Canal and the industry.
For International
#BiodiversityDay
, the
#PanamaCanal
is proud to highlight it has reforested over 22,000 acres of land, with over 5 million seeds planted. Within the next 5 years, the Canal aims to reforest at least an additional 10,000 acres.🍃
The
#PanamaCanal
's inclusion in
@IMO
's Global Industry Alliance falls in line with the waterway's 105-year history of environmental stewardship and makes a proud milestone for its legacy as the

The
#PanamaCanal
is an important link in global energy supply chains, especially for the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States, where more than 98% of U.S. LNG liquefaction and export capacity is located. 👇
Culebra Cut is the narrowest point of the
#PanamaCanal
. Here, men and machines labored to conquer the 13.7 km stretch extending through the Continental Divide from Gamboa on the Chagres River to Pedro Miguel Locks.
Since its opening on June 26, 2016, the third set of locks has increased the capacity of the Panama Canal to the point that with 27% of the transits of vessels, represents 50% of the tonnage that the waterway transports.
By providing a short passageway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the
#PanamaCanal
has influenced world trade patterns, spurred growth in developed countries, and has been a primary impetus for economic expansion in many remote areas of the world.

On a day like today in 2007, the

The increase in capacity provided by the expanded Canal is reflected, for example, in the container vessels. While the panamax locks allows ships with an average of 4,800 containers, the neopanamax have accepted vessels with the capacity to transport up to: 15,455 containers.
The expanded Canal reaches its fourth year of operations this Friday, helping the waterway consolidate its competitiveness by facilitating economies of scale with the transport of essential goods amid the impact of the current pandemic.
Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales explains how the Panama Canal continues to focus on the future, seeking long-term solutions to the water situation and addressing the competitiveness of the route in the midst of the current pandemic.
Vice President for Transit Business
@MarottaIlya
reflects on the last 30 years of her career as a woman working in the
#maritimeindustry
as she becomes the first female Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal on January 1, 2020.
Thanks to the long-standing partnership with our customers and their flexibility to adapt to the water saving measures implemented earlier this year, the Canal has emerged from its dry season equipped to ensure steady operations heading into the second half of 2020.
#DYK
that over 13,000 vessels transit the Canal every year? 🚢
Given its strategic location between two oceans, the
#PanamaCanal
serves 144 maritime routes and connects 160 countries.
The

To the extent that the size of the vessels allows, the
#PanamaCanal
has implemented tandem lockages, allowing two ships to transit in the same chamber.
From the first ship to transit the Canal in 1914 to the present day, the Panama Canal has been a symbol of innovation and progress.

This month will mark the Panama
#Canal20TransferAnniversary
. 🎊
We're celebrating 2 decades since the waterway transfer to the Panamanian people by highlighting how their ingenuity has transformed the Canal into one of the most important waterways for global commerce.
In the midst of the effects of the current pandemic, the Expanded Canal has facilitated the passage of critical global supply chains.During fiscal year 2020, the Neopanamax Locks have mobilized 13 million tons of cooking gas, in addition to 4.9 million tons of grains.
Today we celebrate the heart of our planet, our surrounding oceans. 🌊 Given the waterway's location between two oceans, the
#PanamaCanal
recognizes the importance of
@WorldOceansDay
& supports the movement to protect 30% of our oceans by 2030.
