The text is about Pharaoh establishing himself as a god who protects Egypt and God gradually removing protection from Egypt to prove that wasn't true. The climax is God removing the protection of life and so death visits Egypt unabated because Pharaoh is powerless to stop it.

I'm struggling with words to adequately condemn this reaction to Owen's comment. One cannot love one's wife and children and insult someone who says they are not "birthing machines" and "widgets", the insults imply these men see their families as birthing machines and widgets.

Engaging with Christian twitter I see two broad types of people. Those who want to cause waves to prove the unbeliever's ship is not sound. And those who want to be a peaceful harbor for the unbeliever to repair their broken ship. I think the second is more Christlike.

Why are claims like this still circulating, do people not read mythologies? Most of these claims are blatantly false (the only one I think is true is that he was a healer) and what does Lazarus have to do with anything. Such a poorly done meme.

I saddened by the number of Christians who apparently have never seen this metaphor used before. Historically Christians have seen Jesus in the people who are lost, alone, and in need of help. It is a tool to help us learn to love "the other".

@jonsteingard CS Lewis "The Great Divorce" shows a very real picture of a loving God and the potentiality of hell. Hell is not a place where God sends people to punish them, it is as much distance as God can provide between God's self and the sinner who does not want to be in God's presence.

Eric is playing off Luke 22:36 in this comment. In that verse Jesus comments his disciples should buy swords. In isolation this verse has one meaning; the problem is he doesn't continue reading to v37 where Jesus explains that the reason to have a weapon. 1/5

Christian Nationalists believe segregation is a good thing and should be done voluntarily because of ethnic and cultural differences. Somehow they seem to miss Paul's repeated commands to not let these differences separate us from other believers.

As newer studies in Church history are routinely pointing out, Church courts were much less cruel than their state counterparts and the horrors of the Church courts (like the Inquisition) were overblown or made up in the 19th century because of anti-Catholic prejudice.

And as most scholars recognize Jesus' response in v38 is either to scold them or to say that's enough to look the part. The point is Jesus' initial comment in v36 is tongue-in-cheek. He wasn't tell people they need to be armed he was saying he was going to be misrepresented. 4/5

The meme is clearly wrong Jude directly quote Enoch and Jesus and several NT authors reference other apocryphal works like Ben Sira. It's simply the Protestant lack of concern with these texts that makes us unaware of this.

Jesus was 30 & unmarried when he began his ministry. Paul was certainly over 30 & unmarried. Paul says (in the Bible) how much he wished more people would remain unmarried. Hmmm.

There is no reference to Christianity or the Christian God in any of America's founding documents. And those documents were authored by people who weren't Christians. Given this it's hard to make the claim that America was founded as a Christian nation.

My eisegesis is that God's Spirit is conjugated with feminine forms in Hebrew. He is arguing God is male and this reveals to me how badly the church is failing that we cannot understand God transcends our biological categories and that all gendered language for God is metaphor.
