You often see tweets about how bad “American week” at Aldi is in Germany, but how does German week at Aldi in the U.S. compare? This TikToker shows us:
People like to talk about American exceptionalism, but try suggesting to a German that another country does something better than they do and see how they react.
Germans: "It's right that stores are closed on Sunday because everyone deserves a day of rest with their families! It's not that hard to plan around it!"
Also Germans: "The bakeries are allowed to be open on Sunday mornings because I absolutely need my bread."
I sewed for three days straight and was able to give it to its recipient on time. My sewing machine stopped cooperating and so I ended up doing this one completely by hand.
Three Germans just told me instinctively that it’s “der Vibe”. I asked them why and they couldn’t tell me, they just felt it. A brand new loan word. I mean, I know why it’s not das Vibe “das Weib”, but why not die (Stimmung)?
"Germans have to rethink the way they understand themselves and Germany—as a country in which immigration is normal and positive, German is spoken with a foreign accent, & foreign nationals & new German citizens are every bit equal to native-born Germans."
Me: I had rude customer service today. It really sucked.
Someone every time: but at least they aren't annoying & fake like Americans who only get out of bed for tips
Leute, I'm not asking Frau Netto to ask me how my day was, I'm just asking her not to be an asshole
Today I asked "how long is the ferry to Norway?" (in German) and both my husband and his father started giving me their guesses as to the length of the ship 🤦♀️ I guess I know where he gets it.
I told my grandmother on the phone that we are enjoying spending time out in the "garden" and she asked me what vegetables I'm growing. German is ruining my English.
This photo from my walk yesterday got a lot of response when I shared it in my stories so I made it into an Instagram post. Görlitz looks so great in the sunshine ☀️
Taken today at Brautwiesenstr. 22 in Görlitz. It seems that the photographer mixed up his photos and it got labeled inaccurately - leading to the whole internet identifying it as Prenzlauer Berg. We made sure to keep it as a time capsule here in Görlitz 😉
Strange that this photo appears all over the internet labeled as Berlin. But it's definitely not - this is Brautwiesenstr. 22 in Görlitz and if you went there today it would look like this.
7 yrs living here & I just visited the public library for the first time. I don't know why I thought there would be dragon ladies like at the post office or doctor's office, they were actually really nice & the library was bigger than I imagined, even had an English section.
What is your favorite DIN standard?
Question from Reddit and he answers himself with DIN EN 1860-1 which regulates, among other things, the distances in the grill grate so that the sausages do not fall through 😂
Earlier I shared photos of eggs decorated with wax in the Sorbian tradition. I was just gifted these beautiful eggs by an artist in Meißen (link in comments)
Seems like everyone is ready for fall, but I must confess that I have mixed feelings. After fall comes winter, and I struggle with that time of year here.
For a while I tried to be a tour guide, but I discovered that I'm just not a natural talker. I knew a lot about Görlitz & I still wanted to be able to offer English speaking tourists something, so I created this self-guided audio tour! Check it out👉
Getting the vaccine for tick-born encephalitis and my doctor gave me this to read - they recommend taking a homeopathic medicine to help the vaccine for 5 euros extra. Excuse me what? 🦆
