I have been incredibly fortunate to witness boys basketball history over the last 3 seasons.
@bluedevilslive
made US high school boys basketball history last night.
Give the story below a read.👇
Well, I guess the cat is out of the bag.
As of yesterday, I am the interim sports editor for the
@timesnewsonline
and
@JCPress
. Thank you to Six Rivers media for the opportunity to show my stuff for a little while.
UPDATE: I’ll be on vacation for the next few days. I’ll be running the 125th Boston Marathon on Monday morning. I’ll post some updates and give y’all the link to the app with my bib number if you want to follow along.
@tnsportslive
FWIW, Gate City’s Bradley Dean finishes his astounding career with 2,230 points, which is enough for 22nd all-time in VHSL history. He passed notable names like J.J. Redick today.
He finishes with 862 single season points, good for 10th all-time.

Luray 54
Gate City wins the 2019-20 Class 2 girls state basketball championship! Congrats!
@tnsportslive
@bluedevilslive
To all the HS seniors in Southwest and all Virginia public schools that had their last go around cut short, my heart breaks for you.
To all those in spring sports that lost what you worked for at no fault of your own, I can’t imagine that feeling. 💔
I wish you all the best.
With one game remaining, Mac McClung needs 17 points to pass Caleb Tanner for the VHSL all-time scoring lead. The Devils will play in the Class 2A state title game on Friday in the Siegel Center in Richmond.

It’ll get out eventually, so I’ll just get ahead of it:
Saturday (April 6) will be my last day with Six Rivers Media, LLC.
It’s been a great ride for almost seven years, but it’s time to move on.
There’s far too many people to thank in one message, so this is a blanket one.
Congrats to
@gcboysbball
on a terrific season! FWIW, Gate City’s Zac Ervin finishes his career with 2,351 points, which is good for ninth all-time in VHSL. Gate City is the only boys basketball team to have two players inside the state’s top 10 scoring list.
@bluedevilslive
This was one of my favorites I snapped last night during the ensuing pandemonium after Gate City girls advanced to the Final Four.
@KendalQuillen
and
@Sarah14Renea
play a lot of sports together at GC and seeing the hard work pay off is just awesome.
@bluedevilslive
Final, Class 2 boys hoops finals: Gate City 80, R.E. Lee 65. Gate City wins first state title, Mac McClung finishes with 47 points and Coach Vermillion gets win no. 400!
#VHSL
#SWVAStrong
I want to take a moment and give a very special shoutout to the GC basketball official scorekeeper, Gary Arwood. Without his careful bookkeeping, not many of GC’s stats would be known. He’s seen a lot of hoops. I’m so grateful for all of his help.

What a game by the dynamic duo from Gville: Gillespie finished with 35 while Satterfield had 35 with 10 3-pointers. Never seen anyone hit that many in this building.

Since I seem to be nearly everywhere at any given point, I often get the question “where do you actually go?” Well, I took a look at purely football that I’ve covered this fall in both Virginia and Tennessee. I was stunned, to be honest. I really have been everywhere. 🤯
BBB FINAL/OT: Eastside 63, Auburn 60. Austin Ford misses a shot at the horn that would have tied it for Auburn. Eastside comes back from down 12 points in the fourth and wins it! Unbelievable game!

View from the seats at Fenway!! A few rows up from Pesky’s Pole and ALDS Game 3 coming up shortly!! So pumped (even if I’m a Yankees fan) to see a game at one of baseball’s cathedrals!
On this day last year, Gate City’s Mac McClung broke Allen Iverson’s VHSL single season scoring record (948) with a 3-pointer from the top of the key and ended the game with 41 points against Lebanon in the Region 2D quarterfinals. McClung only needed 25 to accomplish the feat.
Memphis native Emmanuel Bynum with a huge last 100 meters to win Brooks PR 400 in 46.24! Big lifetime best there for him! Future Tennessee Vol!

Junior guard Bradley Dean will start next season with 1,368 points and finished this season with 708 points (24.4 PPG). If he follows the same progression, he too will reach 2,000 career points by the end of the year. Stay tuned... 👀
As of Thursday, Jake Perry, a crafty lefty, leads the team in batting average (.349), slugging (.558) and OPS (1.020). He’s also tied for second on the team in home runs with two.
Daniel Boone’s Eli Penix is a double-winner in both the shot put and discus! He now owns both school records with his throws today of 164-4 (discus) and 57-9.5 (shot put).

For the
@TSSAA
to not live results for the state meet is an absolute joke.
We live in an era where timers can give live team scores as the race is going on with splits at each mile or 1K.
Do better, TSSAA. You’re not giving the athletes, coaches and parents what they deserve.
