Torpoint Ferry-Update on PLYM II
Work on refitting the PLYM II is nearing completion. The final stage was carried out over the weekend and the beginning of this week, with the ferry currently due to return to Torpoint on Friday morning (16th June 2023)
Our staff have been very proud to join millions of people across the country taking part in the Thursday clap of thanks for NHS,carers & other essential workers.Last night we went one further and lit up both crossings with blue lights to support the event.

Seaweed washed up on the slipways is being recycled as fertiliser. Viridor have collected 65 tonnes–enough to fill 5 double decker buses. This has been turned into compost as part of our ‘zero to landfill’ waste collection & recycling contract. Find out more on our News page.

Bridge: Good morning. High winds continue gusting at over 50mph across the main deck. We shall remain closed to high sided vehicles, double decker buses, motorbikes, caravans and other wind susceptible vehicles until further notice. Unfortunately delays are inevitable.
Tamar Bridge-We have been working around the clock to install the contactless card payment system at the bridge to co-incide with the resumption of tolling. Unfortunately there is still some work to do and it will not now be available on Monday morning.
Ferry:13:01hrs. Due to this mornings earlier incident and a busy period of traffic, ferries crews have worked hard (whilst dealing with public abuse) we are now near to running to schedule. Thank you to for your understanding and we apologise for any inconvenience/delay caused.
Ferry 07:25 – There is currently an approximate one hour queue for the ferry crossing from both sides of the river. Please plan your journey accordingly and follow the directions of staff managing traffic.
We are delighted to announce that Zinns coffee is now available at the Tamar Bridge between 10 am and 4 pm every Monday to Saturday (except in exceptional weather)..

TAMAR II has been taken out of service to prepare for being towed to Falmouth for her refit at the A&P dry dock facilities. As a result the service is being provided by the two remaining ferries. You can view a short film about the refit here
Ferry: For those residents in Torpoint that reported hearing an alarm coming from HMS Raleigh it has been passed to us by them that it was false alarm and no action required.
Ferry - 11:28 - Due to Lynher being prepared for departure to Falmouth, the Tamar will be out of service for a while because of the tugboat. We will update as soon as anything changes. 1 ferry service
Ferry 17:50 Our service has now resumed – please allow extra time when traveling as some delays are expected. Apologies for any inconvenience caused due to this suspension of our service during this emergency operation.
Due to the challenges regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, we have had to change some of our ferry loading procedures to accommodate social distancing. This may affect ferry capacity at peak travel times. Please plan your journey accordingly.
Toll Resumption: A huge thank you to everyone who has used the crossings today for their patience as we all get used to the new tolling systems & arrangements. We are continuing to review the system to ensure the process is running as smoothly as possible.
Each ferry pulls itself across the river on two chains. Each chain is over 650 metres long and weighs 23 tonnes, with the total length and weight of chain in the river around 4 kilometers (approximately 2.5 miles) weighing 150 tonnes.
Fantastic coffee and cake with an amazing view. The Zinns coffee van is parked in the Tamar Crossings car park between 10 am and 4pm every Tuesday to Saturday. Why not pop to the Tamar Bridge and try it out.
Ferry. The Tamar ferry is approaching Plymouth on its way to Torpoint, expected to arrive about mid-day. There may be disruption to the other ferries as the Tugs hold the ferry in position to enable the chains to be attached. We will post regular updates throughout the procedure.

Ferry: 1810hrs. The third ferry due to come out of service at 1825hrs will continue to run to help clear the traffic. Three ferries remain in service with crews also working hard to help you get home safely.
Ferry: 1825hrs. The Devonport Tower Defibrillator has been reinstated in its box that is attached to the tower, and is now again available for emergency use if needed.
Ferry: The intention tomorrow morning is to put the start -up crew on-board using a power boat to hopefully prevent a late start. However Gale Force Winds are expected to continue throughout the day and may affect scheduled timings.
Ferry - From Monday,15 June all foot passengers are required to wear face coverings while travelling on the Ferry. In line with recently announced Government policy any passenger who is not wearing a face covering will not be permitted to board the ferry.

Ferry: There is a yellow weather warning of high winds coming into force over the next 24 hours. While we always attempt to run the service as close to schedule as possible, please be aware that high winds may cause disruption. We will communicate any impact should it occur.

Ferry: 20:40 - In order to safeguard a 3 ferry service in the morning, the maintenance team have remained on site and have been successful in rectifying the prow fault. All 3 ferries can now come into service tomorrow at their scheduled times in the morning.

Ferry 09:55 - The scheduled two ferry service has now resumed. There is still flooding on the Devonport beaches and lanes so caution is advised when boarding or leaving.

Ferry: 1030hrs. Today at 1100hrs we will be temporary holding the ferries from departing Torpoint and Devonport. This is to allow us to join in the national 1 minutes silence for all NHS & Key workers who have lost their lives to COVID-19.

Ferry – 09:02 – Due to tidal and wind conditions forecast for today being similar to yesterday, posing similar hazardous conditions, we will likely require a suspension of all ferry service again tonight, estimated between 18:00 and 19:30. Please plan your journeys accordingly.

Ferry 20:00 - Given the flooding seen at Devonport tonight, with bigger tides and winds forecast between 6am and 8am tomorrow morning, more flooding is very likely to reduce service delivery at those times. Please plan journeys accordingly.
Ferry: (Part 1 of 3) - Preparations are underway to replace the north chain on the Plym II ferry on 3rd November 21.
This is a safety and engineering critical activity that requires appropriate tidal and fair weather conditions over a 2 day window.
