NEW: It's harder than ever for game companies to get funding — and even worse for studios led by marginalized devs. Even at a peak in 2021, $4.1B in VC funding went to 223 companies led by men, while $1.2M went to 5 companies led by women.
Bayonetta’s original voice actor, Hellena Taylor, says she was offered $4K to voice the character in Bayonetta 3, which she turned down. She’s now asking fans to boycott the new game, which is scheduled for release later this month.
Over the weekend, a clip of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's suspension bridge in the Marakuguc Shrine went viral — and game devs were freaking out. I spoke to some devs to find out what exactly makes the bridge so impressive:
NEW: Raven Software QA workers announced this morning that they're officially unionizing. They're asking Activision Blizzard to voluntarily recognize their efforts.
Activision Blizzard is being sued by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing after a two year investigation into discrimination against women there. There are a lot of hard to read details here into the "frat boy" culture.
I spoke to 12 former Fullbright employees about a toxic culture that hindered a bright, talented team. It's not explicit sexism and harassment, but shows how microaggressions and employee mistreatment can break down a group a people. Their story:
The really cool thing about this clip (which I took) and the clip from the viral tweet (embedded in the story) is that we attached the bridge to the cart in slightly different ways and yet it changed the weightiness of how the bridge is pulled so much!
This is the fourth lawsuit related to the Activision Blizzard gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment allegations. The company is also under investigation with the SEC (discrimination) and the DOJ (Overwatch League).
In a bizarre studio closure and layoff message to staff, Possibility Space owner Jeff Strain blamed the studio closure on employees leaking information to the press.
Activison Blizzard employees will walk out of work Wednesday in protest of leadership’s “abhorrent” response to the DFEH harassment lawsuit. The workers have four demands, including ending mandatory arbitration.
i interviewed a bunch of people who made the iconic 1980s legend of zelda cartoon — including link and zelda's voice actors! one of the writers hired his 16 year old sister and his mom to write episodes, and that rules. there are so many good anectdotes:
Thousands of people have been laid off from the game industry this year. I’ve spoken to dozens of workers about the devastating toll — people who’ve applied to 100s of jobs while dealing w/ the financial and mental struggle of being out of a job before the holidays. Their story:
With companies both big and small being in the news for alleged gender discrimination and sexual harassment problems this year, it should be clear that this is an industry-wide issue.
Sega of America workers won their union vote today with 91 votes yes and 26 votes no. (Several votes were challenged and not counted.) Significant win for the union movement in games, and the first major company to include roles across the company in its union!
Geoff Keighley has still not responded to this letter, which now 78 Future Class members (out of 150 when the letter was issued) have signed. The Future Class members who signed are looking for a platform tonight to acknowledge the crisis in Gaza.
Many video game industry workers are tired of the status quo, ready to leave behind a culture of sexism, harassment, and mismanagement. This is how the industry is unionizing, compiled into a 54-page zine we've been working on over the past year:
13 unionized Keywords Studios QA testers, working on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, were let go on Sept. 27. Keywords said it was the end of a contract. Either way, the union has filed a complaint with the labor board to dispute severance — different from BioWare dispute with workers.
And there it is: A New York-based law firm has filed a class action lawsuit against CD Projekt on behalf of investors, citing violations over federal securities laws.
36 people were reportedly laid off at Humble Games this morning in what staff are calling a total closure of the publishing company. Devastating news — dozens of people lost their job, and the industry loses more resources.
The Keywords Studios QA workers, who worked on Dragon Age: Dread Wolf, laid off in October will picket outside BioWare's Edmonton offices on Nov. 7. Per
@RBryant2012
, BioWare/EA tried to block the office picket, but the labor board denied that request.
In the subsequent videos, Taylor talks about how this isn’t a problem unique to her — that “fat cats” everywhere take advantage of people’s talents. She also speaks about how it’s impacted her mental health.
🚨🚨🚨 do you have an indie game coming out in 2021? do you want it to be potentially shared on polygon dot com? please show me! my contact info is in my bio, or you can just drop some links here. 🚨🚨🚨
This is a great example of how unions have power to negotiate layoffs — a union rep said 18 jobs were saved at the bargaining table, plus better severance to those being laid off by Sega of America. Unions ✨can✨ prevent layoffs and make things more equitable for those laid off.
Sega of America filed a WARN notice reporting that it'll lay off 61 employees in early March. The California WARN Act requires companies with more than 100 employees to give 60 days notice for layoffs over a certain size.
Another sad day for the industry.
last night, CAH representatives posted answers to a series of questions we asked regarding allegations made about the company. i spoke to 21 former employees and contractors, plus many others with ties to the company and its founders. their story:
I am happy to report that I am cancer-free! There were bad cells in my tumor, but they didn't invade anything else — now that it's out, I likely won't need any more treatment. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
More than 800 Activision Blizzard employees have signed an open letter to leadership following the company's "abhorrent and insulting" response to California's DFEH discrimination and harassment lawsuit. You can read the full letter here:
🎶 computers are cool for girls 🎶
super excited to share what i’ve been working on for the past month — the story of how barbie fashion designer, the first mass market game for girls, was made.
We have instituted our own Zero Tolerance Policy. We will not be silenced until Bobby Kotick has been replaced as CEO, and continue to hold our original demand for Third-Party review by an employee-chosen source. We are staging a Walkout today. We welcome you to join us.
"But when it comes to Activision Blizzard, just time after time, they keep losing trust with us. They keep denying claims. They keep telling us that we’re wrong. But when it comes right down to it, we need a systemic change. We need the ability to have transparency."
Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya tweeted this morning, but didn’t explicitly say it was about Taylor’s statement. Fans in the comments are absolutely taking it as such.
Tunic is a creative throwback to NES cartridges and jotting notes in the margins of instruction manuals. So, we treated it as such. Here’s our illustrated Tunic review:
SAG-AFTRA members voted 98% yes to authorize a strike over the video game contract bargaining, if needed. The union will take this into negotiations Tuesday to Thurs. It doesn't mean a strike will happen, but gives the union leverage in negotiations. Story tomorrow.
Video game performers are leafleting outside The Game Awards at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles tonight, looking to spread awareness of their ongoing contract negotiations. A strike is still on the table, but they are not picketing tonight:
Seven out of 50 former BioWare employees who were working on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and let go in August are suing the company for “adequate severance,” according to a statement released Tuesday.
i spoke to 15 current and former QA and customer service employees about activision blizzard's culture, long hours, and low pay. (an additional ~dozen or so employees also provided polygon and other press with statements on their work conditions as QA and CS, also included here)
The Nintendo of America QA worker who said they were fired for talking about unionization has settled their labor dispute with Nintendo and staffing agency Aston Carter. Aston Carter will pay them $29,910 in back pay, damges, and interest.
there is a lot going on in neopets right now, including a disaster involving black market pet trading that's creating big problems for crime-free traders. the economy there is incredible. please read our story about neopets most valuable creatures:
I've gone through the court documents from the 8 other Sony employees alleging sexism at the PlayStation maker. One woman describes having to pump breastmilk in a storage closet with a broken lock, on top of alleged systemic limits on women’s promotions and sexual harassment.
!!!!!! this is so cool, and means a lot to me. media is a hard business to be in, and i care so much about the work i do. to see it recognized is an honor!! 😭😭
Some good industry news: Activision QA workers voted yes to unionize, making Activision QA United the largest video game unit in the US with ~600 workers. Under Microsoft, the process went a lot differently than with Activision's other unions.
Hearing there are more 150 people at Blizzard's Irvine campus, with dozens more gathering outside ABK's Minnesota QA office, too — impressive show of solidarity, especially for a walkout organized mere hours ago
Activision Blizzard QA workers at Raven Software have voted in favor (19-3) for unionization, and the group will now move intro contract negotiation with the company. It's a major win for the game industry's unionization push, building on years-worth of momentum.
The Embracer Group restructure has the potential to have a devastating impact on several studios and lots of people. If you work at an Embracer studio and want to talk about it, you can reach me on Signal at 1-917-426-4372. I'm sorry you're going through this!
The thing I keep thinking about with all these layoffs is how studies have shown that layoffs don't actually save that much money. EA expects to spend up to $165 million on this, on top of the ~$200 million from last year's cuts.
SAG-AFTRA is asking its video game performers to fill out ballots for a strike authorization vote — deadline is late September, when contract talks begin again. The last video game voice actor/performer strike was in 2016, and it lasted almost a year.
When I started writing this story, it was at 500 signatures. After one hour, more than 200 Activision Blizzard workers have signed their names, bringing the total past 700.
After 10 years, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood is no more — the game is gone for good. I spoke to the people who made it about their game, its legacy, and what was lost when the servers went offline.
a group of scammers is targeting video game industry hopefuls looking for work, impersonating companies and tricking people into thinking they've gotten their dream jobs. then they ask for money. riot games is trying to take legal action. here's the heartbreaking report:
in a statement to polygon, activision blizzard said the WSJ report is "a misleading view of Activision Blizzard and our CEO," despite the reported 500+ harassment, sexism reports in the past few months
For an industry that's valued in the hundreds of *billions*, it's truly nuts that thousands of people — probably more than 5,000 — were laid off this year.
Workers at Corsair's Duluth, Georgia warehouse have filed for a union election. It'll include full-time and part-time hourly workers across a bunch of production jobs — these are the people who touch all products before they head out the door.
BREAKING: The FTC just banned non-compete agreements.
The Federal Trade Commission has issued a final rule making it illegal for bosses to make workers sign noncompetes in any scenario, and voiding nearly all existing noncompetes.
This is a game changer for American workers.
Microsoft's studio closures today mean at least seven studios (Bethesda's four, Take-Two's two, and Paladin Studio) have been closed in May alone. Not normal!
Feminist Frequency has an important legacy in the video game industry, but the work it required took a toll.
“I’m ending Feminist Frequency because I’m extremely burnt out,” Sarkeesian told Polygon. “I can’t vacation that off. I can’t offload that anymore.”
🚨 hello! i am once again asking to see all yr indie games planned for release in 2022 for a polygon story (a la this one from last year). email in bio, but also OK to post here! 🚨

SAG-AFTRA video game performer negotiations continue today, with the union looking to secure basic health and safety measures, restrictions on AI, and wages that keep up with inflation.

Major layoffs at Fae Farm, Dauntless dev Phoenix Labs today. Two sources said over 100 people have been impacted. On LinkedIn, a former worker said all in development games have been cancelled, including one about to be announced. Devastating news — so sorry to those impacted.

Major is at peace 💔 I don’t know how I’m going to go on without him. The lymphoma progressed too quickly and the chemo couldn’t keep up. He will always be my best boy. I had the best seven years of my life with him.
I might be in the minority here, but if no one is willing to pay for your work in Esports you should work for free.
The market has spoken that you aren't valuable enough for someone to pay. Build experience and rep for a bit and try again. Check entitlement at the door.
Terrible news this morning that brings Microsoft’s gaming layoffs to more than 2,500 in 2024 alone — the 650 lost jobs are in addition to 1,900 in January.
BREAKING: Microsoft is laying off 650 employees from its gaming division today. Xbox chief Phil Spencer sent an internal memo to employees this morning to announce the layoffs. Details below 👇
