I did not know him well, but he was kind enough to let us hang with him at a tailgate before the 2018 CWS. Saddened to learn Ryan Mallett passed away today. His TD pass to Ronnie Wingo on a wheel route against Alabama was electric. RIP.
So... some news. I am excited and grateful that my first major writing/research project will be in print later this year. Thank you to
@AugustPubs
for guiding me through the process.
A few quick thank yous to mentors who helped me along the way...
Thread coming… Note: this is not a post about gender equity or Title IX. It is about economics and student enrollment. According to US News, it costs $50,844/year to attend Furman University... 1/
While I am a huge journalism advocate, the media mob around Brady is flat out stupid. NFL has to do a better job with security. What an embarrassment. CBS paid a ton of money for Tracy Woolfson to be swallowed in a mob of humanity. Ridiculous.
I have been writing and researching the role athletics plays in enrollment at D-III schools for a while. I’m beginning to see a relationship between schools with 40% or more athletes and the risk of campus closure (e.g. Finlandia, Birmingham-Southern).
As we worry about changing the college sports model at the FBS level, we also need to make sure there are solutions in place for small schools, too, where sports are arguably MORE important to the institution.
Check out how many students at D-III schools are varsity athletes:
Apparently, Razorback fans will be turning out in force in Omaha. Price per ticket on NCAA's website for Sunday's game is 2x that of any other opening round game. Also, how can NCAA justify selling tickets to its "amateur" sport event at market price?

So if it isn’t Gragg, not a good day for “sources”.
D2 and D3 schools have been using large roster sports to boost student enrollment for a long time. Perhaps D1 schools need to consider this as well.
The post-Covid college athletic scene is going to look really different than it does today. -30- 6/6
My favorite thing (sarcasm font) about sports is when fans say "we" did this or "we" should have done that. No. "We" don't have the talent to do this or that. "We" didn't put in the work. Let the 21 year olds be 21 year olds. Don't put pressure on "them" by making them "we".
Why is it so hard in today's society to say, "you know what? Our bad. We made a mistake." Instead, let's double-down on interpreting a singular word. Heck, let's even underline it twice.
Rare is person in today's society that owns his/her mistake. Always something/one's fault.
Proud of my man for working hard to achieve his dream of playing college lacrosse. Lots of good memories traveling to all time zones to play, playing catch in the yard, and watching from the stands. Go do big things and have a wonderful academic experience,
@AndrewDittmore
Always appreciate listening to

The sun is shining on a new semester at

and learn from our students!
Also, apparently Arkansas is part of flyover country today. 🤷🏼♂️
Proud to be able to recognize my friend and former student

as the Outstanding Alumni Award recipient for

during the
@uacoehp
virtual student awards.
Congrats, Dr. Wood and good luck in your career with

Typo: He is a 2016 grad, not 2000!
Pleasant surprise in today's mail was this edited volume, including my chapter on sports programming as a public good. Thank you to Greg, John and Adam for including my research. Would it be too nerdy to read this book on my vacation? 🤷🏼♂️🤓🚢
Really wanted to see Long & Bielema stay and the funds from their buyouts used to further the educational mission of the university. But, what do I know? I just study and teach about this stuff.
Really interesting and important research from

In case anyone wants to fact-check that a baseball team from Washington has indeed won a playoff series since 1924. Grays won in '43, '44, & '45 with Griffith Stadium as home. Or you can check with

I imagine Houston Texans are sending flowers to Rob Manfred for helping move local newscycle away from yesterday's football game. Sports talk radio content for days in Houston.
Excited and (a bit) nervous to begin my
@UarkHonors
class on sociopolitical history of the Olympic Games this afternoon. First time teaching in a while. Since it is Thursday, I thought I would throw it back 18 years Salt Lake 2002. So. Much. Younger.
Excited to participate in this year’s
@TheSECU
academic leadership development program along with about 70 other academic leaders from across the conference.
Congrats to my friend and colleague
@SarahStoko
on her new position. I appreciate all she has taught me and look forward to seeing her create big things at Clemson.
How long do we think it will take my students (or my colleague s) to recognize I quickly put on the same collared shirt over my tshirt for our virtual classes/meetings? Does anyone else have a work-from-home shirt?

Y'all are going to get sick of me with this... But if the Mountain West plays fall sports in the spring, they have not canceled fall sports. They have postponed them to the spring.
More news: Mountain West cancels fall football season because of COVID player health & safety concerns, sources told
@Stadium
. League will consider playing in spring. MW & MAC are 1st two FBS leagues opting not to play, bringing total to 26 FBS programs
A former student reminded me this week that he learned in my class the difference between delay, postpone, and cancel as it relates to sporting events. Now would be a good time to revisit those definitions. Delay means the event will happen that day, just not at that time...
@ChantelJennings
From what I have been shown it appears the swag bags that the Men receive from the
@NCAA
are much more substantial than the Women as well.
@ncaawbb
@marchmadness
. C'mon NCAA do better. Be better!
This article from
@marcatracy
will be sure to elicit passioned debate from the Hog fanbase, but the thesis is not incorrect. Reaping the financial rewards of conference affiliation and enjoying football success are not always symbiotic.
I am absolutely devastated to learn my friend, Dr. Todd Wilkerson, passed away. He worked hard and was kind to everyone with whom he came in contact. We spoke often, even a few days ago. He was so happy to be on faculty at
@KUSportMgt
. Condolences to his family and his students.
Stephen Dittmore, assistant dean in COEHP, will moderate a panel this week at the 17th Annual Sport Marketing Association Conference. "Competing for Eyeballs in an Extremely Fragmented Sports Media Industry":
Carefully worded to say these athletes "attended college". Guessing a high percentage of them never graduated, so let's not pretend the NCAA cares about education when it promotes former athletes.
Congrats to a graduate of our program, a Minnesotan, and an all-around solid dude
@KNARFWONGAR
on achieving the dream of being a first-round NFL pick. Lots of good fishing lakes in Michigan!
One of the things which the Olympics does better than any other sport, is the clean field of play. There is no way media members can storm the field the way they do at Super Bowl. Let the athletes celebrate and enjoy the moment. That post-game was just an embarrassment.
Do college football recruiting rankings really predict success? Pleased to feature research from

faculty in today's

which helps answer that question (spoiler alert: yes it does).
Go, Maria Fassi! Maria's a sport management major in the College of Education and Health Professions at

I am watching the 2018 Olympic Winter Games on an app, which is playing through Chromecast on my TV, and authenticated by my subscription to PlayStation Vue. No cable. No satellite. What a time to be alive.
If you have not already done so, please give

Well, this is unfortunate. Journalism classes should be mandatory in school, if for no other reason than to promote media literacy. The inability to discern objective reporting from biased, agenda-setting journalism is a plague in our country.
We regret to report that the Ark. Legislative Council accepted the Dept. of Education’s (
@ArkansasEd
) recommendations today, which no longer require journalism to be an elective in Arkansas high schools.

This is how PR works. Same play. For Cardinals broadcast, a player makes out. For Dodgers broadcast, a player scores. Both are true. Thank you for listening to my TED Talk.
Only 30% of athletic departments indicate they have trained security personnel supervising tailgating areas. That seems like a risk management problem waiting to happen. Insightful research from John Miller,

Listening to final

show of season is bittersweet. If it is the last ever, he has handled this with class. I will miss his approach to working with his players. He truly recruited good people.
I wrote some words for
