Chennai is India’s most underrated city for young people. Amazing food, clean, safe, affordable rents, great nightlife (YES) and so much scope for activities - cycling, sailing, surfing 🏄♀️.
Avg South Asian Olympic medallist: Slept on the pavement, begged for new equipment, starved for a fortnight, parents sold all belongings.
Avg Western Olympic medallist: Ivy League degree, MBB consultant, PhD in dinosaurs, part-time model

Slowly but surely, LinkedIn is now in that uncanny valley where chatgpt is commenting on posts written by chatgpt. A beautiful cacophony of grammatically perfect, completely braindead takes.
It’s almost unfair how well located Mysore is. Want city life? Bangalore is 3 hours away. Hills and Forests? Kabini, Bandipur, Coorg, Wayanad are 3 hours away. Mountains? Ooty is 3 hours away. Heck even beaches of Mangalore/Udupi are 6 hours away. Insane.
Was probably among the 0.1% of brides who had to worry about 2 factor authentication 30 mins before getting married. But I loved everything about my smallcutezoomwedding 🥰
Folks at Boat and Noise wondering why your sales of low end earphones are shooting up in tier 1 cities in india - it’s because corporate employees are all playing Secret Santa this week with thousand rupees budget.
18 mos ago a (now) unicorn founder rejected me for a PM role because I’d never built something used by more than 10k users (they ended the interview there). Today an App I launched as a PM hit 1 Million users (in a niche category!). Allow me to show off a bit 😌
My mom's vantage point as a doctor with mostly lower middle class/underprivileged patients offers a stark picture. A lot of women with symptoms are refusing to get tested because if they test +ve, they have to isolate. If they isolate, nobody can run the home.
Can we please stop calling covid a blessing in disguise for anything, including, dare I say it, ed-tech. Tens of thousands are dying every day. Tens of thousands of kids are dropping out of school and many will probably never go back. Startup valuations do NOT make up for this.
It’s almost unfair how well located indiranagar is. Want startups? Kora and HSR are 20 mins away. Old blr charm? Central Bangalore is 20 mins away. Bars and good restaurants? They’re right there. Want to spend a few days at the hospital? Just walk on the footpath on 100ft road-
All cab drivers in Bangalore seem to have that one friend with whom they share play by play updates of their life on the phone. Low-key jealous. Reminds me of spending all day at school with my friends, then coming back home and immediately getting on the phone with them.
Want to brag a little bit here - my dad is the business head of Dolo (among others) and grew the brand and biz from scratch over 20 years. I guess I know where my 0 to 1 (to a billion) itch comes from 😃
India consumed 3.5 bn Dolo tablets since 2020 🤯 For a country of 1.4 bn people that is 2-3 tablets/person (suddenly sounds reasonable?)
Depth of the Indian market doesn’t fail to surprise me. Everything universal gets to crazy scale. Be it UPI payments or Dolo tablets 😂
Unpopular opinion maybe but if you’re ordering something worth 50 bucks and expecting a human being to deliver it to your door immediately, it’s totally ok to pay a bunch of fees for that convenience.
Looks like I am buying different varieties of FEE🥸
Handling fee, Rain fee, Small cart fee
Next what? Payment gateway fee, Browsing fee, Employee salary fee?
It’s 2002. You’re at a Chinese restaurant with your family. You order the usual - sweet corn soup, 2 by 4. And when it arrives, you all wordlessly dunk vinegar, salt and pepper into the soup without even tasting the soup first. Hakka noodles is on the way. Life is good. 😌
My Lucknowi in-laws sweetly sent Tunday kebab paste for my south Indian parents. My parents excitedly fried up the kebabs and ate them with... plain rice and poriyal. My spouse is horrified.
South Bangalore fam, here's a must try new food innovation! A chain of shops called Yelneer Katte - they make delicious shakes from coconut water and malai and serve fresh out of a coconut. Add-ons include ice cream, fruits, jelly, etc. Super yummy and refreshing!
Next billion dollar idea: A cohort based startup accelerator solely focused on helping participants scale to get acquired by Byju's. We can call it BY-Combinator.
Calling it:
@DanishSait
's video today will be about the Bangalore Boom. "Macha, did you hear that?" "Ya dude, looks there was a BANG in Bangalore no?" "hahahah" "hehehehe"
Almost every local kid in my south Bangalore school moved to the US after undergrad. Only ones here have a family business or are doctors/lawyers. Lack of kannadiga representation in corporates is a pipeline problem.
If anyone’s looking for the latest database of India 1 consumers, it’s with bookmyshow right now. Anyone who tried getting into queue for the coldplay concert.
I did not pay my credit card bill for just a couple of days past the due date thanks to a cred glitch. Guess what
@HDFC_Bank
did?
They did not SMS me
They did not email me
Maybe they tried calling but truecaller marked it as spam.
They called my FATHER!
So many of friends and family are in the US and Europe. Until now I never really thought they're living a particularly better life - just a different life. But seeing them now go on hikes, dinner dates, vacations.. slightly questioning my life choices. 😐
You’ve probably never heard of Habuild and Saurabh Bothra but they’re silently taking the Indian boomer audience by storm with their yoga class. Here is my mom just watching the class on her phone because she had a flight during her daily class time but didn’t want to miss it.
Switzerland on your mind but don’t want to deal with the Schengen visa? Presenting the Japanese alps - all the same vistas, lakes, snow and cable cars 🚠 at a fraction of the time, money and effort. More people need to know about this!
Spent a day hiking and forest bathing in the highlands of Kamikochi, 2 hours from Matsumoto in Nagano prefecture. With snow capped mountains framing the scenw and a beautiful river keeping us company, a wonderful day was had ☺️
Something about the world uniting on Wordle and collectively deciding to keep the word a secret is just so pure ❤️ It’s a big deal - remember how GoT fans had to stay off social media every time a new episode aired? Wordle fans are gentle souls.
In other news, yesterday my brother served himself a karandi full of dosa batter onto his rice and polished it off thinking it's slightly odd tasting curd rice.
Let’s call a spade a spade - this story is about caste. Vast majority of Indians eat meat, but vast majority of VCs are from a small pool of vegetarian upper castes. Just like any high paying management job. That’s what should make us all uncomfortable as a society.
I hate searching for a dress on myntra and having to look through 5400 options. These apps need to learn from Indian shops: you are shown a small initial set based on your prefs, you shortlist some and the sales associate keeps adapting from feedback to show you more batches.
Booked a Baleno test drive today but the nexa guy brought along an Ignis instead?? And tried selling it to us by saying Ignis is a ladies' car as it is easy to drive.
Wrong car + casual sexism is not the best sales strategy, Maruti 🙄
Just witnessed in a luxury apartment entrance in Bellandur: A middle aged, well to do man parked his yulu at the entrance. Asked the guard if any 3BHK is available for rent. Guard said no. He sighed, got back on his yulu and went to the next apartment.
@peakbengaluru

Is there a functional reason men and women's gym clothes are different? Why do men get to wear super comfy knee length shorts while I have to choose between ultra tight leggings or bum shorts? I don't want to look sexy dammit, I just want to squat without fearing for my inseams🏋🏽♀️
I love RRR but I’m sceptical of western audience appreciating Indian entertainment on social media as it ends up being the easiest way to rack up engagement thanks to india being a DAU factory. Too many white YouTubers reviewing Indian movies for this reason.
Indiranagar ka goonda hoon main is the most boring part of the ad. More people should talk about the HODUDHAKBIDTHINI!! If only they'd also included t**a muchkond hogu also 😆
My domestic worker opened an SBI account when she visited home in Calcutta, and was told she can view her balance on the YONO App. She got logged out now, and now to log in, there’s some error and she needs to visit the HOME branch to do anything at all. How horrible.
When I was younger I thought I was dumb and people in positions of authority are smart and have it all together. Today I still think I’m dumb but I think those in authority are also dumb. Everyone is just dumbly chugging along.
Graduated today and having a mixed bag of feelings. Happy to come back to my “real” life, yet unsure how I’ll settle back into reality away from this bubble. Going to BSchool at age 30 was not what younger me would have envisioned, but in hindsight it’s been great! (1/n)
There is no point to this rant other than the fact that covid sucks. It's the worst thing to happen to us and really exposes the ugliest side of human society in so many ways.
Same with daily wage labourers. Patients are scared to visit doctors in case they'll be asked to get tested. Catching covid means no wages. Which means no food. So they continue with their lives popping paracetamol.
Good zero to one talent is so hard to find. If you find them, hold on to them and never let them go. What makes someone good at zero to one? Some thoughts
Whey protein twitter - get yourself some of the ID Frozen fruit pulps. 1 tbsp Mango pulp is ~50 cals, and it transforms your whey smoothie into a delicious mango shake.
TIL one of the factors behind Netflix introducing a 30 day free trial was that they hadn't fully built out the billing system when they launched the subscription model and needed to buy time.
Mind-blowing but also the most startuppy story ever. 😃
So much restlessness and anxiety of life (career, family, love, health) boils down to just one thing, and that’s the inability to accept that one has to trade off X to get Y. Adulthood is about learning to make peace with tradeoffs.
New joiners in companies often think often think they can add value or grow faster by outsmarting their peers. Don’t be that person. In teams with high talent density, being ‘smart’ or ‘sharp’ is the baseline. There are no points for smartness.
As a married person, I love observing how the campus gym is the most fertile flirting ground for the singles. People asking their crushes to “help them with their form”, flexing harder while side eyeing if the cute girl is looking at them, wearing cute outfits. Wholesome 😌
It’s been almost 3 years of living with Bengali spouse and I’ve hit peak culture shock today. Him and MIL made aloo-paneer sabji (?!) and discussed how it didn’t have enough aloo (!!!)
Imo peak quality of life is if you live close to a big bustling city -with all its variety and socialising options- but also someplace where you can just step out for a walk in nature. Do such pockets exist in india? Enlighten me 👀
Double income long term partners - how do you split your finances? We’ve been trying spending out of a joint account but a BIG pet peeve is that UPI can only be linked to one phone number.
Overheard at co-working space
Guard: Which startup are you from
Guy: I am here
Guard: ok, which startup
Guy: I am here!
Guard: I KNOW BUT WHICH STARTUP I NEED TO MAKE ENTRY
Guy: It's called "IamHere".
My grandfather’s 90th birthday today. I asked him what advice he has for us. He said without a beat - “Stay in good health so we can celebrate my 100th” 😃
"Jaya, are you safe?"
"Kya ma, sab boom boom keh rahe hai?"
"Bugger I thought it was the sound of the economy crashing"
"Hundred percent China only did this"
No other dietary preference worldwide talks about “smell contamination”. Even the most staunch vegans will not mind their food *sharing space* with meat. Messed up on so many levels that Zomato is legitimising casteist notions of purity and pollution. Please read a book.
The number of kids from India who want to go to South Korea for college (undergrad/postgrad) is really proof that the Korean soft power project through entertainment is working.
Tip for people early in their careers, especially 'gifted kids' used to doing well academically - in life, people give zero shits about how smart you are. It worked with teachers, won't work with managers. Go out, bring results, get things done.
Have a feeling it’s the beginning of the end for ride hailing apps in india. How can a marketplace survive with such deeply unhappy stakeholders on both the demand and supply side?
If you're in Bengaluru and are contemplating leaving the country for good but aren't sure about the decision - I have a solution. Just drive down 80 ft road Koramangala. Decision made. Bye, have fun in Canada.
Just had a brainwave that you can now use the Communities feature on WhatsApp to turn it into a full blown handy Notes App. Just make a community with yourself and create groups for each sub-topic!
6 week update on Air Fryer: This device has changed my whole life. Went from daily Swiggy dinners to cooking almost daily, because it's so so simple to just chuck something into the Air Fryer and end up with something tasty and healthy on your plate. *chef's kiss*
WhatsApp launched emoji reactions but didn’t include “+1” as a reaction. This is the proof we need that the chat is truly encrypted and the product team can’t see how users behave on group chats.
Remembering the time I went to a Udupi hotel in Mangalore and asked for Mangalore Buns and the waiter looked at us like 🤨 and went "it's just called Buns".
@akaushik759
True but I honestly don’t believe they should hold that against the city. Lots of Non-Hindi speakers move to Delhi, they learn the language and move on.
Having lived in Bangalore, chennai and Hyderabad, this is my theory:
Chennai: zero pretense, 100 on substance. Hyderabad (at least the ‘new’ parts): 100 on pretense, 0 on substance. Bangalore lies somewhere in between.
Quitting Instagram is interesting cuz it retrains your brain to discover what truly appeals to you - not what would look good in a photo, not what everyone else is posting about, not what you want others to see - but what places, aesthetics and situations actually give you joy.
If you’re in Mysore and are tired of the usual palace-church-zoo thingmajig, recommend spending an afternoon at the Jaganmohan Art Gallery checking out the Wodeyar family’s art collection which includes some exquisite Raja Ravi Verma paintings.
It’s finally official, travelling to Japan next week for 10 days! Most publicly available tourism content about Japan is from a boring western lens of exploring the ✨orient ✨. Hit me up with your cool suggestions, friends!! Going to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
@Schandillia
Calling food-grade meat as ‘contamination’ also shows how much the notion of vegetarian as pure and eating meat as impure has pervaded our thought process
Life update: Pleased to announce that I have updated to Spotify premium after finally not being able to tolerate their ads anymore. Congratulations to me and more importantly to Spotify.
What are some other cities that offer so many great options for weekend trips? Would love to know. Can think of Chandigarh (though most options involve mountains)
One year since this happened ❤️
Yep the first couples to do "zoom weddings" are having their first anniversaries now. Hope we can all stay safe and get vaccinated soon so we can go back to normal life again.
