when i am bored of my proper work i start researching eighties actors no one cares about but i do and so today i have discovered mallory's boyfriend nick from family ties is now a partner at a boutique investment firm and looks like my dad.
very smart dissection of
@aoc
's revelation by
@moiradonegan
who will have had to have written this pretty fast to get it up so soon after the fact. impressive clarity and depth for such a quick turnaround. this bit in particular is very familiar:
mahershala ali stopped saying yes to roles after GREEN BOOK because he believed it was his wife’s time to focus on her art. i can’t think of many - if any - actors who would do this at their peak.
i am no longer a columnist at longreads.
@saribotton
& i resigned together in solidarity (you can't actually resign as a permalancer but we did anyway). i will forever be greatful to
@reportermike
for hiring me on sari's recommendation & supporting me whole-heartedly. 1/9
i wrote about that thing where every week we all rush to cover the same thing at the same time and the same, like, two people are lifted up above the flood. and what kind of cultural critic are you if yer not coining some shit!
whenever i see JIM CAVIEZEL trending i can't stop thinking about the person who worked with him who said he was so dumb she hoped he never got stuck in a paper bag because he would never be able to get out.
“it spread almost like a cult film over here.” ICYMI i wrote about why RRR was the indian film to hit with western audiences.

john singleton was 24 when his DEBUT - BOYZ N THE HOOD - was nominated for the oscar for best director, also making him the first african american in the category. bow down!
“I was warned by friends in the film community that no one would talk to me about TIFF. I spoke to 10 people for this piece. Among the 17 others I contacted, most did not respond.” My feature on the TIFF Lightbox has dropped.
🚨FROM YOUR NEW CULTURE COLUMNIST
@LONGREADS
🚨: i wrote about stephen elliott, louis c.k. & aziz ansari, the men who lack the self-awareness to apply their prescriptive masculinity to themselves.
HELEN SLATER, who got only $75,000 in 1984 to star in SUPERGIRL, the 1st ever female-led superhero film, told me: “for me, that was more money than i could ever imagine.”
ahead of WONDER WOMAN 1984, i went long
@hazlitt
on female superheroes now & then:
love that netflix canada keeps upping the price while maintaining HALF the content available to americans. altho frankly from what i can tell about their aesthetics mandate, if you've watched one netflix original, you've watched them all.
“we have a problem with our structure that has to be blown up.”
my investigation into canadian television's lack of diversity is finally here. a big thank you to the executives/producers/academics who talked.
"i was, and continue to be, the only black medical student in my cohort of 259 medical students at university of toronto." bet the first nations numbers aren't much better.
no one does crime stories like this fucking magazine and i would give my eyeteeth for the chance to do one there (imagine having skip hollandsworth as a mentor?!)
i know automattic ceo matt mullenweg believes his data backs him up. i know every tech millionaire believes the utopia in their minds. i wonder why none of them ever stop to ask why their numbers, their plans, always come at the expense of everyone below them. 8/9
i have extreme anxiety over this column but i think it’s important for white journalists to own up to how they cover black culture (usually badly). infinite thanks to
@carvellwallace
@sorayamcdonald
@craftingmystyle
&
@ira
for not telling me to fuck off.
i wrote about the death of ROOKIE -- and LENNY and THE TOAST and THE HAIRPIN -- which all have one thing in common, they were run and read by young women. coincidence?
if you are looking for a culture writer or editor, i am as available as the thousands of other journalists without staff positions. my email is meyrink
@hotmail
.com. and, of course, there is no better colleague than
@saribotton
. hire her first. 9/9
also publications either can’t or won’t pay to send you anywhere anymore. so basically even a field story becomes one that is within your own community in the end.
i wanted to google who came up with the choreo for this and apparently cate blanchett just showed up to the set of the music video /w red headphones on and did her own dance (she was supposed to stand still lol).
they need a word for the rage i feel having been a model tenant for 10 years siphoning $200k into this person’s pocket and getting this kind of response to a request to slow down the rent increases.
can’t stop thinking about all those people who think privatizing everything is the way to go because the government is inefficient or doesn’t use funds properly or whatever. private companies are openly stealing from everyone and actively destroying the world and it’s like: cool.
i wrote about how we continue to romanticize journalism even though it's a well-established shit show: "yes, it's cool...and i might be out of a job next week."
“often child sex abuse is bundled up into an issue of violence against women, and therefore it is catering to girls rather than boys.” i wrote
@longreads
about the boys of hollywood whose abuse is not reckoned with on its own gendered terms.
“two of the most pressing issues of this dark and darkening period: hair trigger violence among americans and the constant drumbeat of propaganda against the homeless and here we are today at the perfect intersection of the two.”
@lukeoneil47
"Instead, Raab was connected to Brandon Rubinshtein, a publicist who also represents Dennis Rodman through his non-public-facing PR firm, Dog Shit Media." ROLFMAO.
i wrote about how rich executives have fucked the arts in toronto and how the media has just kind of watched.
thanks
@thelocal_to
and amazing editor
@nickhunebrown
for asking ❤️
i wrote about how useless it feels to be a critic when the planet is dying...and what we can do about it (it doesn't include fighting with celebrities).
MY HUGE BILAL BAIG PROFILE DROPPED
@MACLEANS
(4k wds). it is HARD to find a home for in-depth celebrity profiles in canada. i pitched this piece EVERYWHERE & am thankful to
@emilylandau
for taking it. more editors need to commission pieces like this. 1/3
fyi: i am sick af (karma?) so will be offline today but i worked for months on this piece. it’s the real story behind the feminist blogosphere and the women who helped make feminism what it is today — even if they aren’t recognized for it.
writing sucks for many reasons but one of the big ones is that you almost definitely know when it's working. so every time you DON'T feel that, it's, like, why am i bothering. which is, like, about 80 percent of the time.
