I executive produced my first documentary 🥹🎬
See Us, Hear Us was created by the lovely girls of
@MilkHoneyBees
in response to our research report which examined the ways Black girls navigate girlhood, specifically in South London, from adultification to self expression & joy.
This cafe just kicked out a teenager who was sat reading her book because she didn't buy anything.
She left too quickly for me to offer to get her something, but this is heartbreaking. Young people barely have anywhere to go relax, hang out, or just read a book without cost.
I studied history at university and took a number of modules on nazi history. When I asked my lecturer what happened to Black Germans, he responded that there “wasn’t really any.” And this is how erasure happens seamlessly in the classroom.
"Don't give up, and defend yourself with confidence."
Theodor Michael Wonja was one of the last Black survivors of forced labor camps in Nazi Germany. This is his story.
When I was in college I had a white sociology teacher tell me black people from single parent house holds (like me) end up in prison, pregnant, or uneducated.
Today I’m publishing academic research into racism in higher education.
Thank you Morris, I told you you were wrong.
Please tell young ppl in your life to memorise an emergency number. Today I stood with two young Black boys (not men, boys) who were stopped by police. One asked to call his mum, the police said no. I offered but he didn’t know her number, and wasn’t allowed to look on his phone.
During my trip to Gambia, my family showed me precious books that’d been passed down through generations dating back to Timbuktu.
Our history survives through preservation, archiving and love. It was an incredible experience to sit with these in real life 📚
This is an academic at SOAS, as in the School of Oriental and African Studies. Clearly displaying racist stereotyping and deploying the whole ‘you should be grateful black boy’ narrative.
I wonder how he treats his black and brown students if they have a grievance?
If there's one thing the British are rubbish at, it's racism. After Stormzy's dad did a runner, our welfare state helped bring him up. It may not have been perfect, but it was better than what was on offer in Ghana.
@Soodamoo
Exactly, hundreds have permanently closed all around the UK over the years. I can’t even think of one that is close to where we are right now.
Clever clever, using Black in the first instance and BAME in the second. Hoping that people will glaze over this and assume that 22% are Black, but that’s not the case is it. BAME is not a racially homogenous group or interchangeable term with Black.
More Black British students than ever are choosing
@UniofOxford
. 22% of undergraduate students starting in 2019 were Britons from BAME backgrounds – up from 18% on the previous year:

Reintroducing myself... as a lecturer in Black British Studies.
Over the past few months I've been working hard creating two brand new Black British Studies modules and it's been a real labour of love. The ethos of community is poured into every week

If safe to pls stop and be a guardian when you see these things happening, ask them if they’re ok, make sure they feel as safe as they can be and stay with them. If you know your rights, let them know theirs too. Take down badge numbers and anything else that you feel necessary.
When an elder dies, a library burns to the ground.
Benjamin Zephaniah freed many minds with his pen. He has now ascended to join our ancestors, leaving behind a legacy that will travel longer than each of us have on this earth.
Thank you for all that you gave, rest in power 🕊️
"I told a police officer that my son was missing, please help me find him, and she said 'if you can't find your son, how do you expect police officers to find your son for you?'" Ms Joel said.
That officer is disgraceful.
I often get asked how I hear about events, exhibitions etc that are on in London. More time it's through socials or friends.
So I decided to share the love by creating a thread of events, arts, culture, books and more that you'll want on your radar!

Yesterday I marched for my uncle Ismail Ceesay. On 28th May 2019, he was stabbed to death by white murderers. They were later released by police. The narrative of white knife crime does not 'fit the description,' so it doesn't warrant the justice?
Feel like this didn’t get ‘picked up’ enough in the news cycle.
So let me repeat THE HELLA RACIST POLICE STOPPED AND SEARCHED 22,000 YOUNG BLACK MEN DURING LOCKDOWN.
This equates to 30% of young Black men in London. Don’t ask us why we’re tired.
Meet Lee, not only is he the first Jamaican nail tech that I’ve had, he is also the best and owns a nail salon in Catford - Nails by Lee Archer.

This is neo-colonialism in effect. Jamaican’s can’t access their own beaches, whilst huge resorts cut off access, privatise beaches and take money out of the local economy leaving people struggling to make money or simply enjoying their beaches.

My friend Ronaldo is an amazing ceramicist from Barbados with a studio in London. You can book classes, 1:1s, groups sessions, etc.

Sabina Nessa, one of four sisters, lived in London and taught in Catford. She had previously worked helping non-English speakers develop their language skills.
She was walking home.
The fact that
@GoldsmithsUoL
has allowed 29 tonnes of carrots to be dumped in the name of 'art' reveals their complete and utter disregard for the local community, where 37% of children are living in poverty. We are in a pandemic and many are struggling to feed their families.
“I’m speaker six and I’m the first person of colour speaking today.” - at a conference on ‘priorities for tackling racial harassment and improving the BAME experience in HE.’
If we can’t even diversify our panels, what hope do we have for our institutions?
At the ‘risk’ of being darker-skinned, the Royal Family
1. Refused to give Archie a title (which is against protocol)
2. Had conversations and concerns about his skin tone
3. Refused to give Archie security
I don’t wanna hear anyone deny that racism exists ever again.
As it’s Valentine’s Day, I feel to share something personal. I used to think that a revolutionary, liberating kind of love didn’t exist, that I’d need to be less of a dreamer. Last year someone came into my life who changed that, and my days have been full of joyful love since.
I’m planning on getting vaccinated tomorrow but have been struggling with my anxiety. Please can you drop some reassuring comments and experiences if you’ve had yours 🙏🏽
(Trying to keep it honest and open as not everyone feels confident, so please no judgement).
So why the hell is Maura sending Lucie flowers for “support”? After she came out and accused Yewande of bullying and then got exposed for micro aggressive racism? And you’re sending LUCIE support!? What a clown. Gtfo

In September 2022, I made the decision to leave academia. After many years and many institutions, I can no longer participate in a culture that mines, exploits, and dehumanises Black academics and students.

Godrick Osei died after being restrained by police during a mental health crisis. He called the police for help, but paid for it with his life. They must be held accountable.
He was an uncle to my cousins, who have lost another important figure 💔
Important message for protestors❗️ Yesterday police turned up at the home of a Black British person who shared details of a protest on social media. They blocked the door with their foot, went inside + questioned for 20 mins on details of organisers & attendees

The cases of Christopher Alder and Stephen Lawrence written into this weeks story of
#LineOfDuty
. The fictional character Lawrence Christopher combines the devastating final moments of both men at the hands of racist thugs, racist police and the criminal justice system.
Academics, esp those who have built a name for themselves by writing about our oppression (and reaped the rewards & status), just know that i and many others can hear your silence. Racist violence is not a fun thing to ‘explore’ in your journal articles / books, it’s our reality.
*WE NEED MORE BLACK BLOOD DONORS*
Sickle cell disease is the fastest-growing genetic disorder in the UK, affecting Black communities in greater numbers. There is a shortage of Black donors, the NHS need 16,000 new Black donors in order to provide better care to those w/ SC.
“We have been working on this drama for more than five years now” - so pretty much as soon as the fire happened some writers/producers saw how they can turn this devastating tragedy into a drama? Disgusting.
TIPS FOR PROTESTERS THIS WEEKEND👇🏽
✅ Cover your face
✅ Don’t post pictures of peoples faces
✅ Turn off GPS/Location settings
✅ Read up on your rights prior
✅ Look out for legal observers if you need help (they usually wear vests so you can identify them).
TW// Cassius Turvey, a 15 year old indigenous Australian boy was killed by a group of white men as he was walked home from school. They chased him and his friends w bars and a machete shouting racist slurs. Cassius was lynched, another precious life taken.

It has always been a dream of mine to write a book and I'm now on path to that coming true.
In another classic case of 'work for free.' I was invited to speak on a higher education panel, where delegates pay £295 to join this online (yes online!) conference. I responded with my speaker fee, only to be told: "there is no budget for speakers." The jokes write themselves.

As a matter of fact it was said ‘like that’, which is why I wrote the tweet in a way that reflects that. If you read through other comments you’ll see this isn’t a rare experience, others have had similar thinly veiled racism in their classrooms. You can also read my research.

At some point, we need to have a conversation about 'journalism' crossing the line. TMZ ought to be ashamed, the families involved do not need to see viral videos of the flaming wreckage and neither do we. Whilst so-called reporters are sharing vile fake news. Where is empathy?
We are witnessing a genocide in real time cosigned by the most powerful countries in the world.
They will not stop until the Palestinian people have been decimated, with many claiming self defence to justify war crimes. There has never been a more important time to speak up.
Below perfectly describes "the talk" that many Black families have been having for centuries. Growing up in a country such as this requires heartbreaking conversations (from a young age) on the reality of police brutality & abuse of power, inc how we protect each other from this.
As a father of 2 teenage girls I have absolutely no idea how to impress on them that a policeman who stops them may be doing so on false pretences; may handcuff them unlawfully; may murder them for his own satisfaction. What do I say to help keep them safe — avoid the police?
Kano shared my Black Studies Module to his story, excuse me whilst I cry… This is the culture coming full circle man because we’ll be learning about his impact as an artist in a few lessons time, this is what it’s all about ✨

There’s a lot to be said about the criticisms of Keisha the Sket. But for now I’d say, those people have completely missed the point about what makes this book so special, so relatable and so boundary-breaking. KTS was not confined by a colonial lens then, and it sure isn’t now.
At the start of this year I got out of a four year relationship. I began writing down thoughts and lessons on my phone as I went through the breakup, entering single life. Not only did it help at the time, but now I have an archive of healing, growth and experience.
Creating, curating and teaching Black British studies will remain one of the my personal highlights within academia. Our classroom was our safespace and we built a community of students, guest lecturers and academics within that. Proud of what we created 📚
As the world breathes a collective sigh of relief at this historic verdict, we must remember that true justice would be no lives lost at the hands of police, no families torn apart and a future free of white supremacy. Today we exhale, tomorrow we continue.
