For those of you who have just recently started following me:
Hi, my name is Jaida! I’m a very loud person😂I love all animals but I study elasmobranchs🦈and I start grad school at the University of Washington this fall💜💛

Facts that I love sharing w/ non-scientists to get their reaction:
1- snakes are tetrapods
2- the shark lineage is older than the tree lineage
3- yes, elephants can swim and they don’t walk in the bottom like hippos
4- there is an omnivorous shark
5- whale sharks have eye teeth
@toniisaur
Exactly. Calmly let it pass. Keep your eyes on it. And once it’s past you, calmly and slowly get out of the water. But I recognize that is often easier said than done because panic can cause people to lose their common sense when they are scared.
Let’s have a mammalogy lesson! Some people may think the Okapi is a fictional creature (honestly, it almost looks like one😂). But I’m here to give you all these non-fiction fun
#animalfacts
about them!
Thanks
@LaurenFuess
for this funky syggestion🦓🦒😄
Today’s
#animalfacts
are all about our Mola Mola matey, our ocean sunfish friend, our pelagic blob buddy! These fish crack me up. They’re one of the animals that make me wonder “how and why did this thing evolve”😂
Thanks
@Squidpastry
for this awesome suggestion😁🌊☀️🐠
On today’s installment of
#animalfacts
we have the cookie cutter shark! They’re one of the smallest shark species and the only known parasitic shark species!! Are they kinda creepy? Yes. But are they awesome?? HECK YES!!
Thanks
@gwobek
and
@Thfcjohn66
for this suggestion!!🍪✂️🦈
For those wondering, these are my 4 science related tattoos! (Yes, my phylogeny is a mess. I got it before my advanced evolutionary theory class, don’t make fun of me😂)
I love them and I’m SO excited to get more! Drop your science/cool tats in the comments! Let me see that ink💉
For those of you that don’t know, I’ll be switching from UW to the MIT-Woods Hole Joint Program for my PhD so I’ll be headed to Massachusetts this summer!! I’m sad to be leaving UW but I’m excited for all the east coast adventures to come😁👏🏽🦈
Busy day today so sorry for the late post but I present to you
#animalfacts
about the coelacanth!! BONUS FACT: their brains only take up 1.5% of their cranial cavity. The rest is filled with fat. Talk about a FATHEAD!!
Thanks
@mars07
and
@NatKSchmer
for this suggestion💙🐠
It has been brought to my attention that this week is
#SeaTurtleWeek
so in honor of that, I present
#animalfacts
on green sea turtles (with a tidbit of info on the other 6 species as well)!!! Who doesn’t love a marine reptile🤩
Thanks
@SEEturtles
for this AWESOME suggestion!🌊🐢
Today marks the first day of
#SharkWeek2020
so I have a special
#animalfacts
today! My first video on an extinct animal: let’s talk about the Megalodon🤩🦈💕Honestly, I kind of wish these guys weren’t extinct… but they are. They DEFINITELY are😂
I spoke with a classroom this morning and one of the students asked if memes were an effective way to communicate science I was like YES PLEASE MAKE MEMES AND SEND THEM TO ME!!!!!
Y’all voted for amphibian so I present to you
#animalfacts
about a froggy boi! More specifically, the desert rain frog of South Africa!! These little dudes went viral a while back because they’re so cute! Show our amphibi-friends some love☔️🐸💚
🦈TODAY IS THE DAY YA GIRL’S CHILDHOOD DREAM COMES TRUE!
Today @ 9pm EST I will be featured in a
@NatGeo
#SharkFest
show called
#PlanetShark
🤩 I am so excited to be sharing some awesome science with the world!
Shout out
@NatGeo
and
@BigWaveTV
! Y’all were awesome to work with🦈
Well it’s not quite
#animalfacts
but y’all wanted a video with Keelon so here you go! He loves dinosaurs so this was the easiest way to get him to participate😂 We hope you enjoy💕🦖
Let’s talk about Salmon Sharks on a Saturday (love me some alliteration)! Latin name: Lamna ditropis. These guys tend to live (and THRIVE) in some really cold waters! Side note: their Atlantic Ocean doppelgänger is porbeagle shark!🤭
Thanks
@Smolichthys
for this suggestion!🔥🦈
Today’s
#animalfacts
go out to our INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT coral pals! BONUS FACT: reefs grow when a polyp attaches to a rock and clones itself. Imagine a whole city of me’s… that’d be, to say the least, a lot😂😂
Say thank you to the reefs corals for keeping our oceans balanced💙
It’s time to discuss
#animalfacts
of one of the ocean’s weirdest fishes… the barrel eye fish!! It honestly looks like a child’s art project gone wrong. But I guess it works pretty well or evolution would’ve “yeeted” it out of existance🤷🏽♀️😂
Thanks
@mars07
for this suggestion!👀
I’m devastated. Apollo, my best friend since I was 11, had to be put down today. I can’t express in words the pain I feel. He was truly one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever known. His brother Taz and I are going to miss him so much. Thank you for everything Apollo. I love you❤️❤️
After seeing my list, people have been waiting for this crazy animal. So I present to you
#animalfacts
on the (tiny brained) vulturine guineafowl!! These guys make me laugh, just because they look so goofy😂😂
Thank you
@EvieTheBookworm
for this great suggestion!🦃🦅
This week’s
#animalfacts

@UnsolicitedDiks
for being a hilarious account!
Thanks to
@ChinoChinako
for this suggestion😁🦌
On today’s

I can’t find who suggested this one but thank you! I love this suggestion🐍
Happy
#LGBTQSTEMDay
from your favorite Black bisexual shark nerd🤓🦈
Cheers to be our unapologetic queer selves🥂 and hopefully inspiring the scientists after us to do that same. Love yourself and be kind to others💕
#loveislove
🏳️🌈
Imagine someone paying closer attention to your hairstyle than your credentials 🏃🏽♀️🏃🏽♀️
I swear y’all act like dreadlocks prohibit you from functioning. It is FREE to mind your business.
I did not enjoy Seaspiracy. They placed blame on a lot of entities that didn’t really deserve it (like Asia as a whole) and shared a lot of seemingly incorrect statistics. I have a lot of issues with it. If you want to watch it, that’s fine, but PLEASE do additional research! +
I had to do
#animalfacts
on wombats today for 2 reasons. 1: if my dog Apollo wasn’t a dog, I think he’d be a wombat! And 2: my friend Jordyn used to do genetic studies using wombat poop and THEY POOP CUBES😂
Thanks
@brittaclems
for this precious and perfect suggestion!!🐻💩🔲
GUYS IM SO EXCITED!! I am off to graduate school this fall! I’ll be working with Dr. Camrin Braun at the University of Washington’s School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences! I am VERY excited to start my road to a PhD in Seattle. Wish me luck!💜💛
Today’s
#animalfacts
go out to our amphibious friends, the caecilians! Things that they are: cute, creepy, legless. Things they are NOT: worms, snakes, legless lizards!!
Thanks
@CParrotLady
for this silly caecilians suggestion😁🐍🚫
Today we have some more invertebrate
#animalfacts
with our ancient friend the chambered nautilus! There used to be tons of shelled cephalopods way back when but now we only have these guys🐌🐙
Thanks
@bonesinstones
for this suggestion! Also, I gotta tag
@SarahMackAttack
😄🦑💙
Today’s
#animalfacts
are all about the Giant Stag Beetle! These guys may look scary, but I think they just look goofy😁Don’t cross a male, though. He might try to toss you off his log😂
Shoutout to
@friel
and
#BamaBugFest
for the great suggestion and bug appreciation🐜🦗💕
Men in heteronormative relationships rarely get flowers. So I bought my boyfriend flowers for his birthday and he was shocked. He said it made him feel pretty. Everyone deserves to feel pretty so I recommend buying your man flowers💐
Today’s
#animalfacts
are all about the marvelous manatee. BONUS FACTS! They have smooth brains (no folds like ours) and they still have fingernails from the terrestrial days. Also, they are precious and need to be protected and appreciated!
Today’s
#animalfacts
are all about a cute little green bird that eats bees (among other insects) like it’s name suggests😂Why are tiny things so much cuter than normal sized things🥰
Thanks
@HenningerNoah
for this cool suggestion😁🦜💚
Sometimes I look in the mirror and think to myself “wow, I’m really pretty :)”. And I hope everyone has moments like that. Everyone deserves to love themselves💕
Tik tok didn’t get banned yesterday so hey! Here are some

@jmhuiee
for dealing with my nonsense and being in my video😂💙
Thank you
@Jamiebojko
for this terrific suggestion😁🦞
I just hit 22k followers which means there are at least 22k other people on this app as weird and goofy as I am. That’s a beautiful thing😂
But that’s also 22k people interested/engaged in science and wildlife and that’s even more beautiful!! Science brings people together💕🤓✨
Today’s episode of
#animalfacts
are all about our pufferfish pals! BONUS FACT: pufferfish beaks are actually just teeth fused together to look like a beak… I don’t know how I feel about that… but it’s affective🤷🏽♀️😂
All photos were taken by Instagram account @ waterlogged1313.
Students applying for grad school, I have a dash of advice for you:
1- being annoying and email those professors again. They may not have seen the first email.
2- talk to the students of the lab you want to join. They’ll be honest.
3- ask about funding. Always.
Y’all got this👏🏽
I know y’all know I had a bad weekend so let’s liven things up with some
#animalfacts
about the green anaconda. I can’t even really comprehend how large this animal is😱 I got to spend some time with a baby anaconda once… even as a “little” one, she was still HUGE!🐍🐍
Today we have
#animalfacts
about the Oceanic Whitetip Shark🤩These sharks are absolutely beautiful. I mean, come on, look at those fins😍They also have an interesting history with shipwrecks, which I think is interesting!
Thanks
@coco_coindreau
for this amazing suggestion!!🦈🚢
Reminder (for myself and others):
Just because math comes more easily to someone else than it does to you does NOT mean you are bad at math/can’t learn math. It may take a little extra work but you can do it. You are smart, you are a hard worker, and I believe in you.
So I hit 20k followers & I am SHOOKETH! Y’all are amazing & I appreciate your support!💙
For my new followers: hi, I’m Jaida! I’m a grad student at UW, I study movement ecology of elasmobranchs, & I do fun/fast
#scicomm
! I’m also a cofounder of the organization
@MISS_Elasmo
🦈🌊
Super weird day so sorry for the extra late post but on today’s
#animalfacts
we discuss the highly endangered Mexican Gray Wolf!! These animals are so beautiful!
Thanks
@sciresSoehl
for this fantastic suggestion! I hope your student enjoys it🐕
Side note: I got my hair done😁💁🏽♀️
On today’s
#animalfacts
we discuss the binturong AKA bearcat AKA popcorn pal! Yes, they smell like popcorn… I find it oddly charming😂 I would love to meet this floofy face in person (from a respectable distance) one day!
Thanks
@amykelinda
for this awesome suggestion😁🐻🐱
Today’s a stressful day so here are some
#animalfacts
on the Mahi Mahi to hopefully bring some happiness to your day.
Please remember, your voice is incredibly important. If you are able to vote, please do so. Your friends, your family, your planet need you.
Stay safe😁💕👏🏽
I FOUND ANIMALS!!
I went to the dock this morning and saw a jelly pal, a crab struggling in the sea weed (lol), and a nudibranch (AKA Nudey Bois). I missed this place🌊
Do you ever tip aggressively well just because your waitress was nice and that’s the cash you had? My meal was $10 and I tipped $10 because that’s the cash I had available🤷🏽♀️ she was so sweet I hope she has a great day
Good day, long fish twitter! TODAY’s long fish of the day is the absolutely incredible Ranzania laevis, the slender sunfish!!! They are kind of shaped like a long dorito, which I quite enjoy
Someone needs to create a shoe brand that makes shoes colored/patterned like different fish species and that are made from ocean plastics or sustainable materials. I’d buy every pair.
The joy I felt celebrating
#BlackInMarineScienceWeek
is unreal. Black people are here, we are proud, we are excited, we are MARINE SCIENTISTS!! And we’re doing big things ✨👏🏽
#BlackMarineJoy
“Sharks are so aggressive” bro if you tried to kiss me without permission, I’d bite you too🤷🏽♀️
Just stop harassing wildlife. Let them exist in peace please.
