cops guarding dumpsters full of expiring food, power companies redirecting grid energy to rich neighborhoods, hotels price-gouging when people are most desperate.
this is a little taste of what climate change will look like under capitalism regardless of who is in office.
honestly this is on the B*den admin for pushing vaccines as the end-all-be-all & also telling vaxxed ppl they don't need to mask.
they've intentionally shifted the conversation towards personal responsibility as to avoid having to give out stimulus checks, rent relief, PUA, etc
no stimulus checks out, vaccinations are extremely inaccessible, somalia is being bombed, folks are being evicted & deported, biden is backing a dictator in Haiti, police are still terrorizing protestors.
but bc Biden's tone is different, y'all eat it up.
clear cutting a vitally important forest that mitigates drastic weather events + supports an array of plant + animal wildlife should be considered domestic terrorism.
not to mention it's an extremely shortsighted move as we need more trees + more stored carbon, not more police.

. Activists have called for a demonstration at Atlanta City Hall at 5pm today, Friday.
dog we got like less than 40 years till all the farmable topsoil is depleted & it's still mfs out here defending this violent, exploitative, form of agriculture under capitalism
happy birthday to Fannie Lou Hamer, the inspiration!! ๐จ๐ฟโ๐พ
โWhen you've got 400 quarts of greens & gumbo soup for the winter, nobody can push you around or tell you what to say or do."
one of the worst things colonization took from us & the natural world is the loss of plant varieties.
for example, in India prior to the green revolution in the 1970s, there were 110,000 landrace varieties of rice. post-revolution, 90% of rice varieties were lost.
i don't think people understand that we're degrading soil at such a rapid rate that by the end of our lifetimes, there will be no more arable soil (suitable for growing crops).
โAll flowers talk to me and so do hundreds of little living things in the woods. I learn what I know by watching and loving everything.โ

how can folks practice personal responsibility when they can't afford to stay home from work? or when there are no testing sites? or the test results come back 4 days later...
finding wild mullein is always a gift ๐คฒ๐ฟ
the plant has a deep taproot so it can handle being cut to the ground & it bounces back with new leaves quickly.
mullein is one of my favorite herbs to smoke ๐ it also makes an excellent tea that relaxes & opens up your lungs โ๏ธ
The U.S. Navy opened fire on one of its newest aircraft carriers, the USS Gerald R. Ford, off the coast of Florida, as part of a test designed to determine whether the carrier can take a hit during battle. The Navy is calling it a success.
in 1969, Fannie Lou Hamer founded the Freedom Farm Cooperative - a Black agricultural co-op in Sunflower County, Mississippi - which was borne out of a pig bank that she had started a year earlier to provide free pigs (as a source of food & income) for Black farmers.
January 5 marks Carver Day, a holiday celebrating the life & understated legacy of George Washington Carver.
He was an agronomist, an innovator & an educator whose work with peanuts, soybeans & potatoes revolutionized organic agriculture in the US.
my friend sent me a young calamansi tree in the mail to add to my citrus collection ๐ฑ
this is one of my favorite citrus fruits as it has a tangy, sour taste & the skin is edible ๐
i don't wanna discourage folks from farming but i promise you self sufficiency (on your own without a large community) is A LOT more work than you think
started 300+ seedlings today in soil blocks! ๐ฑ๐
soil blockers reduce the need for plastic seedling trays & they reduce transplant shock because the roots are air pruned as to avoid being rootbound.
as a gardener, learning food preservation methods like canning, drying, sugaring, vacuum packing, etc will save you from soooo much stress during the summertime when your garden is producing hella food & you don't know what to do with half of it.
grocery stores have really given us a poor understanding of produce. the costs are artificially low, certain fruits & veggies are dyed & we can get any produce at any point throughout the year regardless of the growing season.
we really gotta learn how to share tips on surviving inclement weather rather than laughing at each other if we want any hope of making it thru climate collapse
this needs to be a larger conversation about agriculture under capitalism & how its completely propped up on exploited & underpaid (or often unpaid) migrant labor.
24 people in Georgia were indicted for allegedly smuggling 100+ migrants from Mexico and Central America and forcing them to work at gunpoint.
Victims were forced to dig for onions by hand, with little food and reports of rape. At least 2 died. Suspects made $200M in the scheme.

the aloe vera gel works as a natural rooting hormone. after 5 minutes in the gel, I'll pop half these in water & half in potting soil.
agriculture & revolutionary work are very much so tied together. if you don't believe that, then you've been ignoring Black & indigenous history to your own detriment.
Okay so I've decided to make a thread about the contributions of Black folks to agriculture in the US. Who knows how often I'll update this thread but tap in & learn something! ๐จ๐ฟโ๐พ๐๐

"The farmer whose soil produces less every year is unkind to it in some way; that is, he is not doing it what he should; he is robbing it of some substance it must have, and he becomes, therefore, a soil robber rather than a progressive farmer."
George Washington Carver
"As long as there is capitalism on the planet, it will never be saved. Because capitalism is contrary to life, ecology, human beings & women."

@taurustears
she's got a whole book club that's geared to help folks learn/understand those terms. you can literally watch her growth on Twitter as she learns new shit. she's really not just flexing.
a reminder that $4 billion in debt relief was supposed to begin circulating in June for Black & other disadvantaged farmers but lawsuits from white farmers alleging 'reverse racism' have held that up.
Black farmers are still waiting for their money.
historically a lot of gardeners use phenology (the study of cyclical natural phenomena AKA observing nature's cycles & acting accordingly) to determine their planting schedule but climate change has made that increasingly difficult as plants are emerging unseasonably early.
