When a woman is 6 weeks pregnant, she is only actually only 4 weeks post conception. Pregnancies are dated from the last menstrual period not from ovulation. That means for at least two of those six weeks, a woman is NOT pregnant. Why does this matter?

@oni_blackstock I wish this story was unique. Sadly, it is not. My sister would have died if not for her daughter’s refusal to take her home after she had been discharged from the ER. Black women deserve better.

Dirty Wards were large communal hospital rooms where young women were admitted after botched and septic abortions done in back-alley clinics or worse, done at home.

Not only were these young women sick, often gravely so, but they also had to endure their shame in the presence of other women in their same predicament surrounded by, if they were lucky, flimsy hospital curtains. So much for the right to privacy.

But this right to choose didn’t always exist. Although I practiced exclusively in the time of safe and legal abortions, this has not always been the case. And this is not the stuff of ancient lore.

This means that from the time a woman misses her period, she has exactly two weeks to confirm her pregnancy, make a life altering decision, and should she choose to terminate, find a provider in her area. Does that sound reasonable to you? Of course not.

Despite the fact the Black women are diagnosed with breast cancer at roughly the same rate as white women, their risk of dying from it is 40% higher. What are we doing about this? We desperately need more research and resources. #disparity

@tatsntanlines @jfitzgeraldMD In 2022, women can opt for a primary C/S, but make no mistake, the risks of major surgery exceed the risks of a vaginal delivery, and that risk increases with each subsequent pregnancy.
