One of the photos on the Wikipedia page for the mk1 Astra was taken in autumn 1980 outside Clare College in Cambridge. So of course I had to go and recreate the photo today
For those who didn’t manage to get to my video reveal, here are a few photos of my newest automotive purchase: probably the oldest surviving mk5 Escort (built 30/08/90), of course in base Popular trim. I’m one happy boy 😀
This fabulous trooper ticked over 200,000 miles today. Still feels as tight and robust as ever, and the 100PS 1.9PD engine punches ridiculously far above its weight.
Isn’t the world sometimes a wonderful place?
No history came with my mk5 Escort when I bought it, so I wrote to the previous owner to see if he’d kept anything. I had a suspicion he would, given the excellent condition of the car.
This pile arrived today: I’m a happy boy!
Been working hard on my little Metro for the last couple of days, and it’s now looking absolutely resplendent, and will proudly be displayed in the concours de l’Ordinaire at
#FOTU
tomorrow
Filled up the Escortilicious after 461 miles, and the gauge wasn’t even on the red yet. A comfortable 500-mile tanker I think! Calculated it out at 48mpg too, which is really rather good for a 4-speed
I may have done a new car purchase...
Facebook Marketplace special, still with its elderly owner of the last 15 years. Heated leather seats, sunroof, carpet on top of the carpet in the boot.
Some jobs to do, but 106k miles means plenty of life left
Collection on Monday 😀
Well as many of you guessed from the instrument cluster photo, it is indeed a mk1 Astra. Kudos to
@JeffRuggles
who got it right just from the glovebox photo!
Some of you may know that my dad has pretty severe Alzheimer’s. My amazing friend
@Russelljwallis
made this illustration of his beloved Sierra Cosworth which he had to trade in for a Volvo 940 in 1992 when my brother was born! Dad’s face lit up when he saw it, so it meant a lot❤️
On the Eurotunnel and walked a few carriages back to go to the loo. Every other car on the train as far as the eye can see is a grey Kia Niro with 2 men in each. I feel like this could be the start of a spy action movie…
For those who didn’t watch my reveal video (and I’ll be having words with them), here are a few photos of my new mk2 Cavalier. It’s one owner from new, 55k miles, rustproofted from new, all MOTs, off the road since 2015.
And successfully home! Car drove brilliantly, it’s actually really refined and quiet, pulls well, and very happy on the motorway.
So let me introduce you to ‘The GC’, my little Essex-made mk3 Fiesta, registered in the first month of U.K. sales making it one of the earliest
Well the Cavalier successfully made it home from the unit. Drove sooooo well, especially considering this was its first journey since 2015! A few jobs to do to make it perfect, but I’m absolutely delighted, particularly at the refinement and power of it
Today’s classic car improvement was re-chroming the badges on the Astra (first pic is the ‘before’ showing they had faded to black over 42 years, except the ‘S’!)
A completely overwhelming and fab day at the
@HagertyUK
Festival of the Unexceptional today, topped with 2nd place concourse trophy for my little Metro (with its blanking plate glory).
Spoke to so many wonderful people too I can’t even begin to list them, and so many nerdgasms!
I was innocently enjoying a coffee at a McDonalds yesterday thinking life was pretty good, when suddenly my day got truly made by the appearance of this incredible Renault 11 in the car park. Popped over to take some Frenchie photos and a quick chat
A friend is spending time in Costa Rica, and found this 1988 Volvo 480. Knowing I’m a fan, he took some photos for me which delighted the Dutch owner. This must be a total unicorn in that part of the world!
I didn’t want the green 345 to be getting all the attention, so I took my 245 out for a jaunt this morning so it didn’t feel too left out. Earliest GLT estate in the U.K., as far as I know.
Worked hard on the Cavalier today, and so treated myself to a little drive out to catch the last of the daylight. It drives so nicely with lots of poke and comfort. Next job: brake overhaul and new tyres
I couldn’t be prouder of this fabulous machine: 460 miles done today towing the flippin’ Exxon Valdez in absolute comfort, without even batting an eyelid. Always tracked straight and true, plenty of pulling power. Heated seats! Pretty darn good for an 18-year-old, £1200 banger
Took the green 345 “home” to Ely Cathedral today, which is the place where I first spotted it in 2011 and left a note on the windscreen. Seven years later she agreed to sell it to me, after it had been her daily for 20 years!
Favourite car at the Enfield Pageant was this utterly charming Renault 5. Even though it’s a facelift model and a 5-door, it just sang originality and condition and I’d have loved to take it home with me
My take-home car from today’s Simply French was this stunning 1973 Renault 5, complete with dash-mount gear change, side exit exhaust, pale bumpers and diamond shaped wheel trims. Utilitarian brilliance at its best.
Fame at last, even if it is the Daily Mail.

I’ll have to buy a disguise for my Tesco trip tomorrow, and I’ve already had to close all my curtains to avoid the paps outside.
Unbelievable scenes at Tesco this afternoon. Look at this absolute LEGend, living up to its number plate. My
#chodspot
of the year (so far) will take a lot to beat!
In an odd place with my mk1. Struggling to bond with it: as a driving experience it’s just so loud and lairy. Engine is always harsh, exhaust is always droning. It’s fast and brash, it feels like a hooligan, & there’s nothing sweet about it. It’s delight to work on tho. Is it me?
Today I managed to drive my mk1 Fiesta to the petrol station for the first time. This is a huge step in the car's restoration, and is now a rolling-resto rather than a pile of parts on my driveway. Hurrah. Let's hope it starts and manages to run again tomorrow!
This is my second car of the show: a base mk1 Astra, which means it’s the saloon body style. I completely adore these, because of the engineering involved in deleting the hatchback in order to make the base more miserly. I’ll forgive it the wrong wheels. Love love. Want want.
Brought an old friend out yesterday for the first time in a few years. Started straight up after the float bowl filled up, and drove 25 mins up to my storage unit. A perfectly set up variomatic whisking you along some country roads really is a thing of poetic beauty
My take on today’s farewell to the Ford Fiesta is that it’s very much the end of an era: generations of people saw the Fiesta as a byword for fuss-free and accessible transport that transcended social class (in a way that other Fords didn’t). Here are my two little nuggets of joy
Been having fun with my diamond white 1990 mk5 Escort recreating some photos I took back in 2002 with my diamond white mk6 Escort. Thanks to
@thealso
for his photography and patience
Happy with the progress of gently restoring my newly acquired mk1 Fiesta back to original spec.
Episode 2 of the restoration series is now on the Tubez for your enjoyment
What better place to start than this utterly sublime launch year mk3 Escort in a gorgeous powder blue. The steering wheels on these early low-spec models make me very happy
