You can’t be made gay by reading about gay characters in books. If you’re LGBT, you’re LGBT. I want LGBT kids to find comfort and understanding in my books, and non-LGBT kids to understand other lives, empathise, see we’re really not so different.

The school were eventually told they had to cancel my visit. The governors who had supported me have apparently been sacked. Another visit (to a Catholic primary school also under the control of @RC_Southwark ) was cancelled too…

It’s 20 years since the repeal of section 28. I wrote about being a gay teen under that hateful law in BOY LIKE ME (99p on Kindle right now, so treat yourself!) s.28 left us lonely, afraid and ashamed. And there are people today who would gladly see it return. NEVER.

Before review copies start arriving: the next novel is set this summer, but in the Heartbreak Boys universe, there’s no nasty pandemic. Proms happened. Festivals take place. Boys kiss boys without fear of breaching social distancing guidelines. I’m done with reality, so enjoy! 😂
