(1/5) After 5 years in the making (don’t ask!) my new book on the intersection between games and gambling is now available, and best of all, it’s free to access!
I'll be speaking with the All Party Parliamentry Group on suicide and self-harm tomorrow (Tues 8th Nov), talking about the relationship between gambling and suicidality. Thanks to the APPG and the Samaritans for recognising this issue

Came home from holidays to find this had been delivered. It was wonderful working with the amazing

Heading to Liverpool for a panel on Labour’s response to the Gambling Act Review White Paper (if and when we ever see it). Expect remarks on how focus on individuals alone, not industry practices, for solutions to harms is a ‘politically soft’ option…
1/2 Gambling recognised as a risk-factor for suicide in Govt's Suicide Prevention Strategy for England, with focus on young people. Builds on the tireless work of those with lived experience and the strengthening empirical evidence base, and hopefully create impetus for action.
1. New paper out now...(some thoughts below...)
The relationship between problematic gambling severity and engagement with gambling products: longitudinal analysis of the Emerging Adults Gambling Survey
For anyone interested in the relationship between gambling consumption and harms (and who isn't!), this new paper is for you! Led by Viktorija Kesaite, with Ingeborg Rossow.

A repeated pattern of behaviour from the Betting and Gaming Council. Similar chopping & changing prompted our original open letter, signed by over 50 leading academics and clinicians, to govn demanding a statutory levy.
@GRHAPPG
Govn consulting on the Mental Health & Wellbeing Plan. They want to "understand what are the most important issues to address to reduce the numbers of people who die by suicide..to develop a suicide prevention plan" . Gambling needs recognition.
New editorial from The Lancet on gambling…great to see our work globally reviewing gambling legislation contributing to the debate….

3. Two independent studies show that advertising prompts unplanned gambling spend in 87% of those experiencing problem gambling - any increase in consumption for these groups has high risk of harm and they are supposed to be protected, by law, from harms. Time for change?

Headlines: 14.1% of PGSI 3+ gamblers accounted for 43.5% of gross gambling spend on sports betting. Online casino even greater dependence. Policy/industry should focus on changes creating more equal patterns of consumption and less reliance on those harmed.

To use my favourite phrase….onwards!!!!
(3/3) I talk more about this and all things gambling in this podcast with Lancet PH: . Interesting observations on next methodological steps here: . which would need step change in level of funding to do.
(3/5) esports, social casino, loot boxes etc are part of this trend. “Traditional” gambling companies look to gaming to find the next generation of gamblers. If we're worried about gambling companies sponsoring football, we should also worry about them sponsoring esports.
ICYMI: lots of chat recently about what prevention for gambling harms looks like. Important to set the British experience in context of global trends:

2. Skin betting emerges as a high risk product but so too does engagement in electronic gambling machines, including so-called FOBTs even after stakes on them had been reduced to £2.

3. It's right to focus on better & stronger regulation of online gambling, but we shouldn't forget higher-risk land-based products too, which include EGMs. Issues of their distribution and concentration should command regulatory attention.

Agree with the shift in focus on research - our Lancet PH Commission will lead the way on this. But a levy need not give the industry a seat at the table IF channelled thru independent systems - see here - (endorsed by many…)
