A typical 5 handicap golfer averages 58ft proximity from 125-175y but when hitting from 175-225y their average proximity almost DOUBLES to 113ft 😳
Be aggressive off the tee to leave yourself as short a shot as possible to the green.
Closer you are = closer you hit it. FACT.

Average Proximity for a typical 15 handicap from:
75-125y = 20 yards
125-175y = 30 yards
175-225y = 55 yards
Aim to get as far down the hole as possible off the tee! (avoiding any obvious hazards of course)
Across all handicap abilities, a golfer doubles their chance of getting the ball within 6 feet from the hole if they use their putter from off the green!
Always think putter first.⛳️
Average short game proximity for a SCRATCH golfer from 0-20yards is 7.4ft
Stop expecting to chip everything really close and start managing your expectations a little better. Your game will thank you.
Average 7 iron distances of amateur golfers
*this is total distance and is an AVERAGE, so includes all tops, duffs and thins.
0 HC = 159 yards
5 HC = 138 yards
10 HC = 135 yards
15 HC = 124 yards
20 HC = 114 yards
25 HC = 101 yards
(but everyone hits their 7 iron 150, yeah?)🤨
Scratch golfer - Driver v 3 wood off the tee
% Fairway hit:
Driver = 46%
3W = 50%
Average Distance:
Driver = 260 yards
3W = 241 yards
Is it worth sacrificing nearly 20 yards to maybe hit only 1 more fairway per round?
How many times do you 3 putt?
0 Handicap = every 39.2 holes
10 Handicap = every 14.9 holes
20 Handicap = every 8.2 holes
Reducing how often you 3 putt is a quick way to improve your scores!

Not that much of a difference in terms of FIR%, what do you think makes up the difference in scoring?
How many times do you 3 putt?

15 Handicap = every 10.4 holes
25 Handicap = every 7.6 holes

Ahead of
@TheOpen
, we have dived into our data to see how amateurs perform on the 1st tee shot on the Old Course.
You can see that lower handicaps are more aggressive off the tee, getting closer to the burn than higher handicaps.
📈Data from 6780 rounds and over 500k shots
Green Hit % from 50-100 yards
15 HCP = 49%
5 HCP = 66%
The lower handicap golfer gives themselves more opportunities for birdie from this distance and ultimately shoots lower scores on average. So, if you are wanting to lower your handicap, get those wedges dialled in!
Our V3 GPS watch and shot tracking tags work together to automatically track every shot you hit on the golf course ⛳
The tags are small, lightweight and totally unobtrusive to your swing. 16 tracking tags are included with every V3 purchase 📈
#knowyourgame
When it doubt, run it out!
Data shows a 15 handicap gets up & down 38% of the time with a 9 iron, compared to ONLY 25% of the time with a LW.
A ‘bump and run’ shot is easier to execute, keeps the ball on the ground and gets it rolling early. Give it a try!
Performance average removes outliers (good and bad) to give an average based off how far a well struck shot travels...
P.Avg distances for a 7 iron are:
0 HC = 179y
5 HC = 164y
10 HC = 160y
15 HC = 154y
20 HC = 149y
25 HC = 129y
There are always exceptions to averages.
TIP: Manage your expectations..... a typical 15 hcap golfer will miss a par 3 green from 150-200 yards 81% of the time. Don't be disappointed if you miss the green, be delighted if you succeed against the odds. Play within your ability and do not take on tricky pins!!
PUTT FOR DOUGH 💰
A 0 handicap 3 putts every 36 holes
A 5 handicap 3 putts every 20 holes
A 15 handicap 3 putts every 8 holes
Key is improving pace putting (30ft+)

Morikawa averages 27ft proximity from 175-200 yards on PGA Tour. How close to amateurs need to be to get the same average proximity?
0 HC = 86 yards
10 HC = 50 yards
20 HC = 35 yards

Why par on a Par 3 is like a birdie.
Hitting the green is not as common as you may think, and neither is getting up and down!
Aim to hit the green and make your par, a lot of your competitors won’t.
First day back to Golf in England yesterday ⛳
We pulled out some of the interesting (good & bad) statistics about how Shot Scope users played on day 1 📈
Not to worry, all hope is not lost with back 9 scores improving significantly, everyone was just shaking the dust off 😉
Never guess again ⌚ know when the 3 minutes to look for your ball (or playing partners ball) is finished with the lost ball timer on V3.
To start the timer - you need to select that you hit a provisional from the menu.
A deep-dive into our data proves that when on the fairway/fringe, the best club to choose is the putter.
Up & Down %
Putter v SW
5 HCP = 77% v 36%
15 HCP = 73% v 25%
25 HCP = 62% v 18%
Next time you’re on the fairway/fringe, choose the putter – it’s the percentage play!

If you are trying to make birdies to lower your scores, you have it totally backward.
Great golfers know it is more about avoiding the big numbers.
Double-bogey avoidance > birdies.
A thread about the hard truths on scoring:
