The situation in both Corbett and Rajaji is not good & that's putting it mildly. 2 recent enquiries by senior forest officers indict influential people. Over 35 tigers killed in last 2 years. Am given to understand this powerful lobby now wants an SIT setup to quash the findings.
23 years ago my friend & classmate from the Doon School, Major Mohit Whig, was martyred with two of his men in the Kupwara Sector. Today is his 60th birth anniversary. His father, Brig ML Whig was awarded an MVC in Kargil in 1971. Salute his mom, wife Tina & sons Zorawar & Fateh.
On this day hell had broken loose on the Nam ka Chu 58 yrs ago when 2 Rajput was attacked from the rear by the PLA. Trapped in a valley the men went down fighting, 282 being killed. Many were wounded, most losing toes & fingers to frostbite as POWs. They shall never be forgotten.
Been saying it since March. We didn't light the fire, but now we must finish it! Deploy missiles targeting G219 & oil pipelines all along the 3k border with China as a deterent & make it public. There is a hut in Lumpu with a simple message written in chalk... We Shall Avenge!
Landmark judgement by NGT yesterday when it ordered the Uttrakhand govt to stop the construction of the road through Corbett Tiger Reserve. This is a wonderful development. Our wildlife has to be preserved and it's Non Negotiable! WII had provided fig leaf. Should be investigated

Gen VK Singh on the Karan Thapar interview where Ajai Shukla does what he does best. Treason & traitor are strong words. Time for the Govt of India to ferret out moles hiding behind 'freedom of press'. There has to be a limit to this manipulative behaviour
Air Marshal PP Singh passes away. As the commanding officer of No. 5 Squadron (Tuskers) during the 65 Indo-Pak War, he led the strike against Peshawar, his Canberra leading the way & dropping the Target Id bombs. May his soul find eternal peace - a great son of India@ Salute Sir!
Tragic loss. With the passing away of Colonel Bull Kumar, it is the end of an era. The spirited officer led the initial probing expeditions into the Siachen region & the base camp carries his name even today. It was my privilege to have known him. May his soul find eternal peace!
Whose side are they on? Some very clever motivated reporting going on in our own media. Fabricated reports about Indian troops being disarmed by the Chinese an attempt to recreate the hysteria that followed the Karam Singh incident in the same Hot Springs Sector in Oct 1959.
49 years ago 18 Rajput (now 13 Mech Inf) commanded by Lt Col Ashok Kalyan Verma captured Akhaura and was awarded the Battle Honour along with 10 Bihar. The battalions, part of 311 Brigade, would then assault and capture Ashuganj where the retreating Pakistanis blew up the bridge.
At 0230 hrs, 55 years ago, the guns fell silent all along the Indo-Pakistan border. Fighting that started with Rann of Kutch had escalated - Kargil, Op Ablaze, Op Gibraltar, Haji Pir, Op Grand Slam, Lahore, Sialkot & so on. 2,862 Indians were killed & 8,617 were wounded. Salute!
INDUSTANI relives the night of terror 39 years ago when the mob tried to burn down the Grewal residence in Shanti Niketan. I have the 500 Express Elephant Gun in my hand with which Royina Grewal was covering me when I faced the rioters with a 9mm Beretta while Ajit hid the girls.
Simultaneously 1/9 GR was attacked behind the Rajputs & 5 Assam Rifles with a company of 4 Grenadiers was engaged at Khenzemane. 6 Kumaon were at Kibithu in NEFA while in Ladakh 5 Jat, 18 JAK Militia & Dhan Singh Thapa's men were overrun at Chip Chap on the north of Pangong Tso.
5 yrs ago a delegation from Nepal had warned us China was buying all the media houses. A meeting was convened under a former Ambassador to Nepal then heading a think tank. People came with workable grassroot ideas but the Chair just rambled on about what he had done at Lumbini.
Important not to react to happenings with China & Nepal on the border. Last thing we need is a push-by-push commentary. Let those entrusted with the job handle it without speculative public pressure which is what China probably wants to divert attention from the South China Sea.
We prayed for a miracle. Moti has shown us the way. Hard to believe he is the same animal we were looking at 72 hours ago. It’s going to be a long haul & a lot of work on the part of
@WildlifeSOS
dedicated people. Last night I was watching him eat on a video call with Kartick.
In remembrance of my father on his 85th birth anniversary. Maj Gen (then Lt Colonel) Ashok Kalyan Verma, under whose command 18 Rajput was awarded the Battle Honour 'Akhaura' in 1971. The battalion then went on to fight the Battle of Ashuganj which threw open the gates to Dhaka.
According to reports another 35000 troops are being deployed against China. India's 'Boots on the Ground' reaction indicates that the hands guiding our response are thinking khaki & not OG. Could we be making a huge mistake? My article in TSG this morning
The flame burns eternal. 18 Rajput at Nathu La 53 years ago: the narrative may have changed over years but we shall never forget. 20 of our men, including Maj Harbhajan Singh & Nb Sub Raghav Prasad Pandey were murdered in cold blood by the PLA on this day.

All four of Moti’s feet are gone with either the pad having rotted or the leg having broken. This has to be a major wake-up call towards the plight of riding elephants. SOS Wildlife has done incredible work and they continue to work tirelessly. Moti will need a miracle to survive
It’s with a heavy heart that one shares the news of Moti’s passing. Despite the valiant efforts of
@WildlifeSOS
& Bengal Sappers who responded within minutes when
@Gen_VKSingh
reached out to them, his injuries were much too severe. Moti rests & I thank all of you for your prayers

PLA needed a swift, sharp victory where they hoped the Indians would scatter 'like pigeons at the twang of a bow'. A section of the Indian media was activated to spread the panic with ill-informed taunts like 'at least Nehru fought!' etc. My earlier piece
1981/82 my father commanded 70 Inf Brigade in Kiari, Ladakh. He had under command a VIKAS battalion. During an exercise in the Kargil area, umpire declared them 'dead'. So proud and motivated were the VIKAS boys, they refused to say die & kidnapped the Umpire. Tashi Delek Mr Xi!
Important to remain grounded. Had the PLA sneaked in & occupied the heights overlooking Spangur Gap, it would have been catastrophic. MHA losing ground in North Bank remains a sore point. Army has done what it had to do & it's a long haul ahead. Expect PLA to probe in the east.
Once again satellite images and boundaries are being drawn up by vested interests to paint a false narrative. Colonel Suresh Babu & his men died to ensure that the Chinese do not have a view of the Shyok Valley. PP 14 is held by us as per prescribed strength as agreed on. Enough!
An opportunity lost! PM should have landed at Leh, been received by GOC 3 Div & then done a quick in/out trip with him upto the Shyok junction. You have to build up your commanders & troops on the ground. Also undermining COAS by taking CDS. Nuances important. Cock snook at China
We had eight POWs after the Kargil War. Trouble was Musharraf was saying they are not our men. The only way to send them back was to force his hand, so I was asked to film them & release the footage. Luckily immediate about turn.. PAF sent a plane and took these simple men back!

I met GK in IDSA in the director's office three years ago... grabbed my hand and said 'you saved my soul in Siachen. Would have made such a big mistake'.
New Govt... different sentiments!!!
'Army mulls closing down cantonments'. I guess this was coming. However Cantts do not belong to a few pliable officers & politicians to do away with. These green lungs belong to the people in otherwise mindlessly expanding cities. Army is THE CUSTODIAN. We must SAVE at all cost.
7 years ago we were faced with a similar situation when the Tusker Sidda went down near Bangalore. Then too, the Army had responded and Madras Sappers had built the Karal to prop up the elephant. Miti’s situation is critical… the vets are desperate to make him stand
#prayforMoti
As rifles fire in salute at funerals of our fallen, the irony is killing! Even if protocol demanded they do not carry weapons, why were LMGs not positioned to watch their backs? In 62 the same PLA hunted down & killed more soldiers after the ceasefire than in the actual fighting.
All systems incl the butt of rifles should carry this message: 'this weapon has been obtained from the loose change after politicians, babus & agents have ravaged the original deal'. Of course, the message would not hurt Indiv sentiments only impart info in a transparent manner!
My father, Ashok Kalyan Verma, would have turned 88 today. Since 1962, his birthday came a day after 2 Rajput was decimated on the Nam Ka Chu. He lived with the terrible pain of having lost his larger family but now he’s with his fallen comrades as they collectively watch over us
With the passing of Moti, one has no words to express one’s gratitude to the officers & men from Bengal Sappers. I have always said the greatest hallmark of an army is where no one is left behind. In my eyes, you have raised that bar by extending a hand to the voiceless as well.
For a start let's open up the issue of the Shaksgam Valley with China. After the 1962 War, Ayub realizing that the Chinese would take it either way quietly 'leased' it to the PRC. Wording of the lease itself acknowledges it to be Indian territory. Selling stolen goods is a crime!
3rd June 1956. 17th Regular Course IMA was commissioned. Extreme left is my father, Ashok Kalyan Verma. Commissioned into 2 Rajput (Kali Chindi) he went on to command 18 Rajput (now 13 Mech) which fought the Battle of Ashuganj in 1971. Warmest felicitations to all his coursemates

India needs to tell PRC to take a flying leap. Frankly see no point in
@DrSJaishankar
talking to the PRC. They tried to hit us when we were grappling with a Pandemic. Who but the worst kind of bully does that? Friend or Foe has been clearly established.
Devastated by the passing of Wg Cdr ‘Jaggi’ Nath, MVC and bar (1962 & 1965 wars) at Breach Kandy hospital in Mumbai this afternoon. I had the privilege of talking to him fairly regularly over the last few years and shall miss him sorely. One of the great legends of our lifetime.
Indian Army in Ladakh is like a langur sitting there to keep PLA macaques at bay. Decades ago when Sikh LI moved into Fatehgarh & shared Rajput Regimental Centre, there was heavy tension when Rajput langur eloped with Sikh LI languri. Disengagement owes its origins from there!
If the Chief can't defend his own Cantts, who will? Come on Sir. give it to them on the chin. The whole country will back you! Everyone is sick of Winston's freebooters and scoundrels. I am fiercely proud of our Green Cantts. Let's not settle for the lowest denominator for once!
This is sick! Is this the same Army which did so much for conservation? 2 elephants dead from septicemia from infected wounds as iron spikes laid to stop their movement in Narengi Cantt, Guwahati. Elephant trench would have been as effective

Say a prayer for Assam... for all creatures big and small! Saw a report yesterday that said water was finally receding... the scale of the tribulations caused by the annual flooding is mind boggling!
From Lumpu, overlooking the Nam Ka Chu, a helmet on an inverted rifle pays silent homage to 281 men from 2 Rajput killed by the Chinese in Oct 62. Scibbled below is a message - We Shall Avenge! Now add the names of 20 men from 16 Bihar. Disengage at Galwan, but never ever forget!
Operation successful. Thanks to the Bengal Sappers of the Indian Army and
@WildlifeSOS
and everyone’s prayers the people at the site were able to get Moti to stand up. The elephant has gone through hell and is fighting… it’s a long road ahead! God bless everyone involved.
Remembering Maj Harbhajan Singh, MVC and 66 others from 18 Rajput (now 13 Mech) and 2 Grenadiers who were killed by the Chinese 51 years in 1967 ago at Nathu la on this day. Now referred to as the 'Barbwire Incident', this was the first serious clash after the 1962 conflict.
About time! Kashmir must realize its plight will be like Sinkiang's Uyghurs if the Pakistan-China axis of evil catches them by the short hairs! The younger generation must understand their history. About time they fought with the rest to protect India's territorial integrity.
Indians must be unanimously clear about one thing - there is no dispute about the Himalayan Border. The McMahon Line & the Ladakh boundary was well known & defined by 1914. China grabbed territory it wanted & unlike NEFA, in J&K it retained occupied areas that are disputed. (1/2)
Delivered a talk on both 1962 and 1965 conflicts to officers and their wives at 42 Brigade last night. Two commanding officers were 1st termers in NDA when I shot Standard Bearers. The brigadier had coordinated my Sikkim leg for the Northeast Trilogy! Six Degrees of Separation!
Cantonments being relics of the Raj is pure crap. In fact, if this government is serious about governing, it needs to take on the issue of Grant Bungalows and kick out all encroachers who have bribed and manipulated Cantt Boards to occupy houses. Come on Chief - crack the whip!
At the Mangaluru Literature Festival… was presently surprised to see 1962: The War That Wasn’t at the T1 terminal in New Delhi. INDUSTANI is at almost all the airports…
My article in the Sunday Guardian this morning... why are we always caught with our pants down?
Repeated intelligence failures: Time to worry - The Sunday Guardian Live
Kamal Haasan's comment on Kashmir made in Tamil completely twisted by English Channels. What's wrong with us? Seem intent on misquoting and creating divides where there should be none. This is irresponsible in the extreme. India must stand as one, without any cracks!
All regiments have always performed well. VIKAS over the years have gone through own evolution & are a part of the Indian Army. Journalists now want to titilate themselves & compare with Mukti Bahini that's their problem.
@KatochPrakash
book on Special Forces should educate them.
@ImranKhanPTI
If as reported W/C Shahzaz Ud Din has died in the service of his country, then give him the burial that a soldier deserves. The worst thing a commander can do is to leave his dead behind or not acknowledge them altogether. Pak did it in Kargil and it wasn't cricket!
Military Farms that have been shut down case in point. Make them Citi Forests and treat them like core areas of a sanctuary. Second, now that attention has been drawn to Cantts, clean out the mess of Grant Bungalows and other encroachments. Don't destroy what is so precious!
Farooq Abdullah continues to rant and rave.. tells Karan Thapar Kashmir would rather be ruled by the Chinese! Seriously!!! Give him a golf club & a ball & a one way ticket to the moon with Ughyur caddies!
Reposting the second article on Kashmir in the TSG.
La affaire PRC have been advocating transparency all along but that does not mean spilling out tactical details to counter unsubstantiated charges. Also interesting to note Ajai Shukla's flat denial 8 yrs later that he had anything to do with the Siachen sell out. He has a twin?
Despite all the nautanki & nonsensical handling of our Armed Forces by successive governments, the inherent character & strength of this great organization will always come to the fore. Manekshaw's words in my IMA film:You must fight & fight to win! There is no place for a loser.
In 1962 also Chinese pulled back from Galwan on 14 July. New Delhi was patting itself on the back with accompanying newspaper headlines for domestic consumption. Xi Jinping is a ten-headed monster, desperate for survival. Well done Indian Army but watch your back.
@nsitharaman
Ma'am with due respect, it's ridiculous for you with the Eastern Army Cdr to be in Bomdila. Leave the matter to the CO. He's competent enough! Even the Bde Cdr shouldn't be there. Lot more appropriate for you as RM to stand with the disabled soldier in court instead.
The Beas below my house a day after it caused widespread destruction in Kullu. The few indigenous trees left contained the river. Most of these trees have been cut to make crates for plum and apple crops over the years. We also need giant jute nets with grass to stop land slides.
Body language of Indian players is diff now! Earlier we took part in Int Events & seemed to be in awe of just being there. Now We are there to win & how. This is a colossal step in the social evolution of India as we shed the mental chains of Colonialism. Go for Gold always India
