On this day hell had broken loose on the Nam ka Chu 58 yrs ago when 2 Rajput was attacked from the rear by the PLA. Trapped in a valley the men went down fighting, 282 being killed. Many were wounded, most losing toes & fingers to frostbite as POWs. They shall never be forgotten.

49 years ago 18 Rajput (now 13 Mech Inf) commanded by Lt Col Ashok Kalyan Verma captured Akhaura and was awarded the Battle Honour along with 10 Bihar. The battalions, part of 311 Brigade, would then assault and capture Ashuganj where the retreating Pakistanis blew up the bridge.

At 0230 hrs, 55 years ago, the guns fell silent all along the Indo-Pakistan border. Fighting that started with Rann of Kutch had escalated - Kargil, Op Ablaze, Op Gibraltar, Haji Pir, Op Grand Slam, Lahore, Sialkot & so on. 2,862 Indians were killed & 8,617 were wounded. Salute!

In remembrance of my father on his 85th birth anniversary. Maj Gen (then Lt Colonel) Ashok Kalyan Verma, under whose command 18 Rajput was awarded the Battle Honour 'Akhaura' in 1971. The battalion then went on to fight the Battle of Ashuganj which threw open the gates to Dhaka.

1981/82 my father commanded 70 Inf Brigade in Kiari, Ladakh. He had under command a VIKAS battalion. During an exercise in the Kargil area, umpire declared them 'dead'. So proud and motivated were the VIKAS boys, they refused to say die & kidnapped the Umpire. Tashi Delek Mr Xi!

We had eight POWs after the Kargil War. Trouble was Musharraf was saying they are not our men. The only way to send them back was to force his hand, so I was asked to film them & release the footage. Luckily immediate about turn.. PAF sent a plane and took these simple men back!

For a start let's open up the issue of the Shaksgam Valley with China. After the 1962 War, Ayub realizing that the Chinese would take it either way quietly 'leased' it to the PRC. Wording of the lease itself acknowledges it to be Indian territory. Selling stolen goods is a crime!

All regiments have always performed well. VIKAS over the years have gone through own evolution & are a part of the Indian Army. Journalists now want to titilate themselves & compare with Mukti Bahini that's their problem. @KatochPrakash book on Special Forces should educate them.

@ImranKhanPTI If as reported W/C Shahzaz Ud Din has died in the service of his country, then give him the burial that a soldier deserves. The worst thing a commander can do is to leave his dead behind or not acknowledge them altogether. Pak did it in Kargil and it wasn't cricket!

Military Farms that have been shut down case in point. Make them Citi Forests and treat them like core areas of a sanctuary. Second, now that attention has been drawn to Cantts, clean out the mess of Grant Bungalows and other encroachments. Don't destroy what is so precious!

@nsitharaman Ma'am with due respect, it's ridiculous for you with the Eastern Army Cdr to be in Bomdila. Leave the matter to the CO. He's competent enough! Even the Bde Cdr shouldn't be there. Lot more appropriate for you as RM to stand with the disabled soldier in court instead.

The Beas below my house a day after it caused widespread destruction in Kullu. The few indigenous trees left contained the river. Most of these trees have been cut to make crates for plum and apple crops over the years. We also need giant jute nets with grass to stop land slides.
