This is outrageous. The Saudi government sentenced a 72-year-old US citizen to 16 years in prison and a 16-year travel ban for tweets after arresting and torturing him while he was on a trip to Riyadh to see family. Another horrible example by MBS of how you don’t treat partners.

By arbitrarily harassing and arresting @soltanlife 's family members, the Egyptian regime is not only showing it is guilty of torturing Soltan, as he has recently filed in a U.S. court, but also unjustly punishing his family.

Wow. It’s one thing to dispute the accuracy of Akbar’s reporting, but a whole other thing to claim that he made up quotes. This questions his professional integrity and very legitimacy as a journalist, something I’ve only ever found to be quite impressive.

Nearly four months in, the Biden administration should be doing so much more than simply discussing concerns, which they’ve raised publicly for months. It should be conditioning assistance and support on dramatic improvements and accountability for continued violations.

CNN finds UAE "cleared" of wrongdoing for illegally transferring US arms in Yemen. But as one official noted: "We believe that the UAE now has a better understanding of its End User Monitoring obligations," i.e. they promised not to do it again.

During remarks in Morocco, Deputy Sec of State Sherman should have raised concerns about press freedom & the detention of Moroccan journalists. This would have sent a strong message to the palace & helped empower other journalists who remain under threat.

To look at Khalid bin Salman’s Twitter feed, particularly his pictures with senior US officials, is to understand what the Saudis wanted out of this trip. It’s hard to see how this is even a “recalibration” of the relationship.

In today's request, the State Department is asking for $68.3 million in bilateral aid for Tunisia. Of this amount, 79% would be for security assistance. Only $14.5 million would be for economic aid, despite the country's signficant economic crisis.

Today, President Biden released his budget request for Fiscal Year 2024. He is asking Congress for $63.1 billion for the State Department/USAID. 5% of that funding would be for democracy and human rights programs globally, the same percentage as military aid to Israel.
