My son, worried I’d be angry, very hesitantly told me he didn’t want to play baseball anymore last night. That he likes coding & wants to learn how to build robots. I’ve seen so many parents force their kids out onto the field even when the kid clearly never wanted to play.

Spin rate on a batted ball decreases as exit velo increases. The concept of trying to add more backspin to the baseball is a flawed concept. 1500-2500rpms is ideal. After 3000rpms the air around the ball becomes turbulent & slows the baseball down.

Self promotion is sickening. Players and parents. I don’t know of one player who has received a scholarship offer from a tweet. Tagging schools and coaches is even more sickening. I am a true believer that in 2021 if you can play, they’ll find you. Period.

I really like this graphic of the batting cage overlayed on top of the field from @rapsodo . How accurate is your perception of batted ball outcomes in the cage? Use tape, ropes, or targets in the cages to provide accurate feedback to where foul lines, gaps, & outs are.

The numbers check out. However, while they look impressive they are without context. Lets take a closer look at StatCast batted ball data between 2016-2020 Flyballs 80+mph= .262 BA & .937 SLG 90+mph= .365 BA & 1.322 SLG 95+mph= .506 BA & 1.857 SLG 100+mph= .729 BA & 2.753 SLG

“You don’t have to swing hard, let the pitcher provide all the power.” Why this isn’t true: 1. The bat has 5 times the momentum of the ball 2. Pitch velo correlates to .2mph of Exit velo 3. 1mph of pitch speed=1ft of distance. 1mph of bat speed=5-6ft of distance

Slow motion bat-ball collision. Energy & momentum are transferred on a linear plane. Plus this is just cool to watch. The ball absorbs a fair amount of energy from the bat at collision.

You don’t repeat the same movement, you repeatedly solve the same problem. Multiple solutions are available for the same problem, build out environments that create better problem solvers. Perception—>Action is more important than optimal.

15 years ago I was told I couldn’t play in college because I would die on the field due to my heart defects. For the last 10 years I’ve been told more that 30 times I’m “Not Qualified” to coach at the collegiate level. So many failures, it was all worth it.

Get into a flow state by telling the brain what to focus on by picking one of these 3 goals on every pitch. You can change this from pitch to pitch. But the brain needs a clear goal to focus on 1. Hunt a pitch 2. Hunt a location 3. Hit the ball to a specific spot in the field
