State passes regs intended to stop anyone from taking down Confederate statues.
Memphis sells parks to nonprofit, takes down statues anyway, raises middle finger to state legislature.

Dave Ramsey, who does not require masks at Ramsey Solutions and said he would like to "start a crusade" against them, has had more than 100 cases of COVID-19 at his 800-employee company.
They're planning a giant Christmas party.
Members of the legislature are not allowed to raise money during the session. Following his expulsion, Justin Jones has activated his fundraising page for the District 52 seat.
Wild scene from the balcony of the House as Jones is sworn in by Chancellor I'Ashea Myles. His name was back on the electronic board in the House by 5:22
Metro Council has officially suspended the rules regarding appointments. CM Porterfield, who Justin Jones defeated in 2022, is now nominating Justin Jones. It's a pretty surreal moment.
Talking to someone in Madison whose house was hit by the tornado. First thing they said: "We watched

YouTube channel. They save lives. I'm gonna write a thank you note to those guys for sure."
I'm pretty fascinated by this. Apparently there were hundreds of moms on a Zoom last night working on logistics. This protest hopes to stretch 3 miles from Vanderbilt Children's (where the Covenant victims were taken) to the Capitol. Tomorrow at 5:15.
I'm always fascinated by people wanting to make a public statement who hide behind masks. My grandfather, who flew in the back of a bomber in the '40s to retire that Nazi logo, had a word for them: chickenshits.
If you do not live in Germantown or East Nashville or an affected area, do not come look at the damage. I have gotten calls from residents trying to do clean up who are hampered by people just wandering around in cars
BREAKING: 3-judge chancery court panel rules that Metro is likely to win on home rule arguments, grants temporary injunction against cutting Metro Council from 40 to 20
Vanderbilt University issued changes to campus media access yesterday in the wake of a Kirkland Hall protest where a reporter was arrested (despite clearly IDing himself as a reporter). This change in policy is ridiculous. (1/x)
Whatever the result of this expulsion hearing, part of this feels like a huge unforced error by the supermajority. In giving Jones 20 mins to defend himself, he's airing all of the body's dirty laundry.
Rep. Jones is now airing all the skeletons in the Legislative closet (a member peed in another member's chair, one accused of domestic violence and, unfortunately, more) and noted that they were not expelled.
Not really sure what loophole this falls into (weight?), but maybe someone from the transpotainment industry or Mayor's office would like to explain why this is on Nashville streets (with unmasked people) as the pandemic spikes here.

Located on the Vanderbilt campus is the First Amendment Center. Within that is the offices of the Associated Press. And if that irony wasn't enough to bludgeon you, the school is also home to the Future of Free Speech project.
O'Connell asked if he would support MLB expansion in Nashville.
"I would be delighted to have a conversation with anyone who wants to privately fund our next major entertainment venue."
"Considering the hotel plan...across the street, it is reasonable to guess the Exit/In property will similarly be desirable for condo-minded developers." 🤮
Specially called Metro Council meeting on Monday at 4:30 p.m. to fill the seat after Justin Jones expulsion.
Expect the Council to reappoint Jones. After talking with a number of Council members, the only question is the margin.
BREAKING: Davidson County polls will be open for an extra hour after Chancellor Ellen Lyle ruled in favor of a petition by the Tennessee Democratic Party. All county polls open until 8 p.m. Five supersites open until 10 p.m.
If
@PredsNHL
doesn’t have James Shaw Jr. waving a towel after the anthem for Game 1, it’s a missed opportunity. Fans might take the roof off of Bridgestone. Give him tix for the rest of the playoffs.
I'm pretty critical of local broadcast news. But
@NC5
just did a full hour at 6 p.m. on the special session and the issues involved. It had real depth and provided a lot of context for the session and the state of TN's politics. Really excellent work.
Every time I hear "Respect," I wonder what Otis Redding thought the first time he heard Aretha sing the first 8-10 bars of that song. He had written a pretty good song that she made absolutely electric. I can't imagine the thrill of seeing it brought to life like that.
If
@realDonaldTrump
were to lose (he won’t) his supporters will go to work tomorrow just as we do everyday. When Biden loses, his “supporters” will likely loot and riot. Tells you everything you need to know!

6 years ago the NYT called Nashville "It City," setting off a self-congratulatory wave that continues today. The problem? We've built 2 Nashvilles in the interim, including a Honky Tonk Industrial Complex. It's time to put a bullet in "It City." My essay:
Here are the front pages from the four largest cities in TN. Only Chattanooga has the Trump phone call on its front page. It's the only non-Gannett paper in here. It's part of the myopia of large news chains that have abandoned national news to the detriment of democracy.
Dear
@MayorBriley
and Metro Council,
There are tornado sirens going off all over the county for no reason. The fix for this is $542,000. It seems like in 2019 we should have a warning system that’s a little better than just a mass air raid horn from the 1940s.
“In some cases, we may ask media to remain on the perimeter of campus to take photos/video and conduct interviews (as we have today), particularly during events where safety may be an issue.”
To be clear, this is not about safety. This is about message control.
"A Judge Just Shot Down 25 of the Trump Campaign's Conspiracy Theories in Nevada"
Shooting down their baseless claims, the Nevada judge wrote the challengers “did not prove under any standard of proof" — 25 times.
A breakdown.

Reporters are now expected to check in with VU Comms before coming on campus so they can "understand what you are coming to cover." Vanderbilt is a 330-acre campus in the heart of Nashville with public streets throughout. This is not a press box.
12 years ago today.
"Distribution, brilliant.
Landon Donovan.
There are things on here for the USA. Can they do it here? Cross, and Dempsey is denied again.
AND DONOVAN HAS SCORED."
Next up is Justin Pearson.
If he is expelled, the GOP supermajority will be in the awkward position of expelling two black men while sparing a white woman.
After the massive Christmas party that Dave Ramsey threw last weekend, a Williamson Co. doctor wrote an open letter to Ramsey to criticize his lack of leadership on the coronavirus. Here's what he wrote (thread): /1
I said to someone this morning, if I came to you two weeks ago and asked you to raise $2-3M for TN Democratic House races, you would tell me to buzz off. There was not a path.
They might raise this much in a weekend.
Went to bed last night and we had raised $200,000 for Jones and Pearson's special election. Amazing.
I woke up this morning and overnight we hit $250,000. Bonkers.
You know the total right now?
$425,000.
DO NOT MESS WITH THE ANTI-GUN VIOLENCE MOVEMENT.
I can’t imagine how shitty the ratings for this semifinal are gonna be in the second half. And for the final.
There is no game America is less interested in than Alabama-Georgia
This is a policy born in the wake of the school being embarrassed at public coverage of a student protest. After arresting a reporter — and continually trying to make it look like he was trying to break into Kirkland Hall in released statements — they issued this.

Lopez said Ramsey Solutions leadership had decided it was not “a work from home employer.”
“Can we be a work from home employer for a short period of time?” he said on the Nov. 13 call. “We have proven for five weeks it works. Can we? Yes. Are we? No.”

With 100% of precincts reporting, four women have won election to the Metro Council at large:
Delishia Porterfield, Quin Evans-Segall, Burkley Allen and Olivia Hill.
It will be a majority-female council

There was a funny moment on a cable news show yesterday when a former FBI profiler called the suspect a man. Host says "Could it be a woman?" Profiler responds "It could be a woman, but it's never happened in human history"
It is legitimately hilarious that the NFL didn’t know what to do with Cordarrelle Patterson for a decade. And then Arthur Smith is like, “LOL, you mean this running back?”
IMPORTANT PSA: I'm told that Fox's Donut Den — home of the best apple fritters — is celebrating their 50th anniversary on Friday and is rolling back prices to 1973 levels for one day only.
Do with this information what you wish.
TIL that the party barges in Nashville are not just assaults on the senses and menaces to traffic, but also whack-job, anti-science, Covid-19 truthers.
I’ve never seen someone so thoroughly destroy the value of a product. Never seen someone completely misunderstand the best qualities of a product they bought to run before.
Amazing. Sad. Dumb.

"The biggest way we're going to climb out of this is by wearing masks," Martin's BBQ owner Pat Martin says. "It's not a Republican or Democrat thing...its about the mask. If we all wear a mask..it allows people like me and all over Nashville to open back up."
