The police response in Calgary to the university student protest last night is a noteworthy contrast to police responses to neo-Nazi and anti-LGBTQ+ rallies in this city. I've lived here my whole life and am shocked to see the different approaches.
@LukewSavage
I also can't get over just how wildly incorrect it is? It claims that Nuremberg cleared his unit. It absolutely did not. Nuremberg found all Waffen SS divisions to be criminal organizations.

This is talking about a man who volunteered at age 18 to join the Nazi Waffen-SS.

Today's my last day at CBC. I'm so grateful to have shared this newsroom with amazing colleagues. And to everyone who has taken my annoying phone calls at all hours — thanks for trusting me to share your stories. I'll share more details soon about what's next.

Kenney has said previously that Alberta has had some of the least restrictive public health measures in Canada during the pandemic. Today, in response to a media question, he said questioners are understating the stringency of the measures Alberta has had in place. Which is it?
The man who felt the need to first email me, then my entire newsroom about my makeup may be pleased to hear I've gone with an even brighter lipstick shade based on his feedback. Thanks buddy!
I received a tip last night that proof-of-vaccination app Portpass had left users' personal information exposed.
I was able to easily view names, contact info, blood type, and most concerning, photos of their driver's licences or passports.
Dr. Hinshaw also has yet to release the modelling data behind the province's decision to lessen pandemic response measures, which she had promised to release last week.
I did not think I would start this morning by explaining on the radio that taking an unprescribed formulation of anti-parasite medication dosed for livestock could make you soil yourself (or worse outcomes) if you eat it to treat COVID-19, but here we are.

This kind of criticism is so dangerous. The quote Carpay said is literally captured on video, in the article. Carpay himself does not dispute saying it.

Calgarian Bryon Howard was about to take a video of the beautiful scenery at Lake Louise, when he heard a boom and realized he needed to pick up his pace:
So, for no reason at all, here's an article I wrote four years ago:

Dr. Hinshaw said (as she announced Alberta will ease measures) that her colleagues are aware the current approach to COVID is "not sustainable."
So, I asked all the other CMOHs what they thought about that.
Stephen Duckett, the first president of Alberta Health Services, says Australia's strict lockdown shows it's possible to reach zero COVID-19 cases.
He would know, as one of the authors of the report that guided the country's restrictions.

I had a call yesterday that bothered me. A stranger called, said "his temper was cooling off" but he'd like to request reporters "stop interviewing so many queers." I wish I had told him I'm bisexual. But I didn't. So, I'm saying it now.
Also, why are Calgary media like
@CBCCalgary
uncritically repeating police's claim that there were no injuries last night, when video makes it clear that at least one protester was taken to hospital, and others were badly beaten?
Jason Kenney just condemned hateful speech by a UCP member, but interestingly fails to note that the member in question was also the call centre leader on his campaign.

This article contains multiple factually incorrect or misleading statements, including the claim that Nuremberg cleared the Waffen SS Galicia -- it did not.
OPINION: A lie can make it halfway around the world before the truth has even got its boots on.
And the ongoing turmoil over Canada’s parliament recognizing former SS trooper Yaroslav Hunka highlights one of the most important reasons why.

A CBC producer is lifting the veil on how the broadcaster whitewashed Israel’s horrors in Gaza.
In a tell-all essay, she describes the inner workings of newsrooms where double standards and biases sidelined the truth—before she resigned in protest.
Why were tear gas, rubber bullets, and violence deemed necessary to disperse one group on an out-of-the way campus field, when much more central disruptions to city activities have been defended as freedom of speech?

The Terror on AMC has everything I want in a show. It reminds me of John Carpenter's The Thing, it has beautiful cinematography, it takes place in Canada, and it's existentially horrifying.
Why are some public figures tying themselves into knots to find the most revisionist angles to history, and this Nazi's self-admitted record, rather than simply acknowledging a wrong was done by celebrating this man, and taking steps to make it right?
These policies are regressive, and frankly hateful. By denying children medical care and forceably outing them to potentially abusive parents, lives will very likely be lost.
Gender identity can be a hard thing to talk about, especially when you are involved. But this conversation is extremely important and parental involvement is critical. Kids need to know we love and support them.
My message to all Albertans:
When this politician sent a similar tweet about me in 2019, I received hundreds of messages, emails, calls, many of which were disturbingly violent or sexual. Encouraging targeted harassment is a problem and I feel for these reporters today.
The online harassment of reporters, especially women and people of colour, is a hugely damaging issue right now that many newsrooms are unequipped to handle. A party leader demanding his followers harass people who are asking for comment on stories is a new low.

I waited to publish this story until I notified the company, so it could have time to protect people's information. Portpass' CEO says the data has been pulled, his team is investigating, and he'll be notifying the privacy commissioner's offices:
I should be clear — I'm very lucky! I make a good salary. I'm not worried about becoming unhoused! But if I'm having this much trouble, I can't even imagine how newcomers, or big families, or low-income people are navigating the market. It's unsustainable.
Hey, anyone know who the editor was who published this garbage? It's textbook homophobia and bi-erasure out of 1980.
Unsure why the author seems unable to comprehend that bi people sometimes have relationships with the opposite gender too. Literally what the word bi means.
Follow-up Q: There's a pattern of mocking public health experts who issue warnings, then later implement a response. Why is your gov't incapable of learning these lessons?

If you're a journalist in Alberta who covers politics and you haven't dug into Kenneyism, you're not doing your job. I've just started reading and it's an important look at this time in our province's history.
I was in first grade when the last residential schools closed. Which means millennials were sent to residential schools as kids. This isn't some ancient history thing; it's most of our history, and extremely recent past.
Many of the insufferable, chest-pumping Canada Day articles this week briefly referred to residential schooling as a “dark chapter,” an unfortunate blip; this kind of minimization must stop! The IRS system ran from 1883 to 1997. That’s 114 years!
First Q. Will there be accountability, resignations, a public inquiry for the disastrous miscalculation of treating the pandemic as endemic?
Kenney says the focus is not on politics, the focus is on results to address the crisis. There will be time later to look back.
