All scholars who’ve even once used the term ‘decolonisation’ for the advancement of their careers, please note that now is the time to show solidarity with Palestine. Stand with Palestine. End all occupations✊🏽
Global North Academics repeat after me:
Since I did not raise objections to the genocide, I shall not teach courses on decolonisation, decoloniality, post-genocide literatures from Palestine or other cognate ‘radical’ courses that’ll advance my career & help me procure grants.
Ireland and Spain stand on the right side of history. Luxembourg as well, it seems. EU blockade on aid to Palestine is dead in the water now. These three countries showed moral courage in the face of generalised complicity.
In India, the term “decolonisation” is being mobilised, fiercely so, as an appendix to brahminical supremacy.
No other country has distorted the meaning of the term thusly.
We are in that rare interstitial space of history in academia where the vacuous expanse between teaching liberation movements & minimal solidarity -- forget support -- with oppressed peoples is increasingly gaping at us, right in the hollow of our eyes.
Here we are. The star professor who coined epistemologies of the south, epistemicide & was a formative influence on my/our thinking on decolonisation (esp as depatriarchalisation) stands accused of sexual misconduct. Brava to the junior scholars who explained in a chapter how 1/3
Boaventura de Sousa Santos, who is known for writing about the epistemologies of the south and decolonization, has been accused of sexual misconduct. His former students at the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra detail his actions in chapter 12.
‘My birth is my fatal accident’ is a poignant letter on the gross injustice of being attributed lower caste status in India. Written by the Dalit PhD scholar, Rohith Vemula, as a farewell to life, it recounts his aspirations to be a writer of science. We remember Rohith today.
Yes, thank you. Fanon is still not widely taught in France; in actual fact he’s hardly part of the curriculum. When I teach Fanon, my uni students are surprised to know that he was French.
PS: I give the full story - Fanon renounced his French citizenship. He did not die French.
Let’s never forget that Frantz Fanon's dissertation was rejected, which was later published as Black Skin, White Masks. Academia has always tried to push out those who question its colonial, capitalist, racist, and heteropatriarchal foundations.
What are Zadie Smith's credentials on Israel/Palestine? Where has she written before now about the case? How is she qualified to write about it? Platforming amateur takes that agree with bloodthirsty media-wallahs is how we create the reality we inhabit today.
Decolonisation is everything but in our era everything is decolonisation. Several of us invested in the field for a while now can only sigh. The meaning is hollowed out to such an extent that it now signifies trivial pursuit of careerboarding. Double sigh.
Decolonisation and knowledges of decolonisation produced outside academia supersede the fraction of knowledge pooled in by academia on the topic. This realisation, not a hindrance in the labour of epistemic decolonisation, directs us to legitimise other formations of knowledge.
💯 A conscious effort to read beyond the self-referential knowledge industry of the global north is helpful. The recommendation as always is Sylvia Tamale!
This whole conversation around the need for anti-imperialist Black feminism just illustrates how colonial and imperialist academia is. Black women outside the global north have been organizing this way for a really long time.
#ayquejoderse
Colonialism maintains a stranglehold on knowledge production through an elaborate publication infrastructure largely based in the global North which plays the role of gatekeeping on what qualifies as “legitimate”publishable knowledge.
- Tamale, p281

Incidentally, the one thing I take away from
#Swedengate
and hospitality threads on this bird app:
The arrogance in imagining Indian hospitality is astounding.
Oppressor caste Indians practise selective hospitality based on caste background -- let's be clear about it.
So given my folks interest, see what I mean. Historians need to clearly explain how they deploy 'decolonisation'. "Decolonization by consent" only ever occurs in the imagination of white historians.
Proofed Fanon's first name, added Césaire in index.
OUP has wide readership!
We cannot self-love our way out of this global mess created by the powerful of this world.
We need a strong anticolonial community to end oppression everywhere!
Please do not cite Boaventura de Sousa Santos. I have redacted citations by him, and those decolonial scholars who wrote in his support, from my last two publications. Do not give more supply to sexual harassers in academia.
Cite Moira Milan and this chapter instead.
This is an unbook. It has been depublished, globally, because one person, who is not even named in it, has wielded institutional power to assert that it is forbidden to even hint at their pattern of sexual abuse of academic subordinates.
This is the world we must destroy.
Fanon renounced his French citizenship to labour for the colonially subjugated, Ambedkar repudiated Hinduism; embraced Buddhism.
Both "walked away" to lead by example, evincing what 'decolonisation' entails: extricating oneself from the totality of oppression.
Our colossal task.
institutional academic-celebrity mechanism discredits the victims. It's incumbent upon us to foreground their courage. It's not cancel culture to extend coalitional solidarity esp since the perpetrator belongs to our fields. We need to dismantle the calcified star system 2/3
University - we academics work, survive, fight & thrive in it. This should make any academic shudder. Epistemicide accompanies colonisation. Below does not solely read as an instance of symbolic destruction of knowledge; it is both symbolic and material murder of knowledge.
Read Zoé Samudzi’s excellent piece on the German genocidal force in Namibia.
The quote in the tweet below holds true for all genocides including the current.
Reparative Futurities: Thinking From the Ovaherero and Nama Colonial Genocide - THE FUNAMBULIST
A taster of how the British press and Indian milquetoast followers will spin the narrative of post-racial, diversity of religion rubbish. Power is inebriating; Sunak will uphold the status quo of racial and colonial capitalism. It’s the reason why he’s there in the first place.
One of the most principled and committed scholars of decoloniality has been placed on suspension today. This is an attack on the entire academic community that warrants our attention, folks. It's a far-right hit and win.
We stand with the brillant
@Jairo_I_Funez
.
Respect to Angelina Jolie. She has the spine that world leaders lack. She contends that these leaders are ‘complicit in these crimes’ in Palestine.
As I said, respect!
Incredible how "decolonising the curriculum" a mostly POC student-led initiative tht developed into a demand for transformation has been co-opted by vain academics w/ little to offer. The latter bring in one canonical non-white voice & term it decolonising their entire discipline
Reworlding is about re-creating/remaking/ reconstituting after centuries of de-constitution & destitution of other worlds & other lives of those who were subjected to genocide, enslavement, colonialism, imperialism, capitalism & heteropatriarchal sexism.
- Ndlovu-Gatsheni (2023)
Hinduphobia is fabricated. It does not exist, esp not in UK. The Oxford Students Union ex-Pres has published a book riding the current wave of social justice consciousness. She's appealing to white guilt, trivialising anti-racist work. Her racist views led to removal from office.
Yes, please do read Fanon's political writings in particular. This collection (see pics) is 796 pages of his lesser known work. I feel it my duty to cleanse my timeline of the rubbish I posted. So here's Fanon's insightful understanding of anticolonial solidarity.
bell hooks, Teaching to Transgress (1994) is an ode to love of engaged pedagogy. Re-reading it for the love of Freire and hooks. Learning that students can resist pedagogical processes that do not subscribe to the 'norm'. Invaluable work.
Epistemologies of the South without the South is not the decolonial option, it's the careerist option that several academics have been defaulting to in our era of decolonise-all.
Citational prevalence from the South is an ace start.
PS: There are pockets of global South in North.
The moral bankruptcy of Habermas’s statement on Palestine marks a turning point in the colonial relationship b/w European philosophy & the rest of the world. The world has been awoken from the false slumber of European ethno-philosophy.
-Hamid Dabashi
1. Long read (10 tweets)
Reminder: Sylvia Tamale has extensively offered careful insights on decoloniality & decolonisation not just applicable to Africa but the world at large. And we need to acknowledge it! Selection of quotes from just one book ⤵️
South Asians have always taken their role in upholding the colonial order of things seriously. South Asian communities’ anti-Black racism runs deep. Peckham being one instance amongst many.
[D]ecolonization is one of the most misunderstood & caricatured intellectual movts, esp by beneficiaries of current status quo of coloniality. Most of it critics don't display signs of having read the rich literature on decoloniality & its expansive decolonial archive.
- Gatsheni
embedded in academia. I'm guilty of upholding it for the moment. May the victims find it in themselves the strength to overcome the injury and know that there is extensive support from our end. I'm shattered, yes, & will begin redacting citations from my work as a first step. 3/3
The world's been holding its breath for the moment the catastrophe would hit India. It's happening; the healthcare infrastructure or its semblance totally collapsed. Reports of mass cremations & burials have begun.
Please hold folks in/from the global south close to your hearts.
France has its first gay PM, UK had its first POC PM, US its first Black Pres, rafting for another first.
We're traversing an exhausting era of 'historic events' of 'the first evers' and yet there's little to no material change in the lives of majority - no, not even cosmetic.
Humbled to be co-editing in such company for this important and timely book! I received the contract today.
Thank you Jairo for inviting me. A big up to collective labour in academia.
Request to academics:
Please stop shaming your students online. What do you hope to achieve by making this public? Okay, it's anonymous but the student will know!
Punching down isn't the flex we think it is.
France is a prime example of how Christianity is secularised (laïcised) to the exclusion of all other religions that can *never* enter the realm of secular. The French school, the ideological state apparatus (Althusser) par excellence, marks all major Catholic days.
This photo resembles a painting that future generations will hold close to heart. French MP, Rachel Keke, waves the flag of Palestine during a parliamentary session. Folks resist oppressive regimes that impose violence or support that violence.
Brava!
Namibia has rightly deflated the German state's self-proclamation of righteousness, virtue or atonement. The high moral ground that Germany arrogates to itself is the exact opposite reflection of its actions.
Namibia rejects Germany’s Support of the Genocidal Intent of the Racist Israeli State against Innocent Civilians in Gaza
On Namibian soil,
#Germany
committed the first genocide of the 20th century in 1904-1908, in which tens of thousands of innocent Namibians died in the most
Jayaben Desai led the Grunwick factory strike 1976. Tireless worker for trade union organising; steered the mobilisation against institutional racism; active believer in women's emancipation through financial independence; obtained her driving licence at 60!
Died: 23rd Dec 2010
Pls make classes on colonialism core subjects, taught by teachers with expertise. Surely young folk are taught parts of this history but untrained instructors are glossing over genocidal role of empires. Spain *literally* annihilated indigenous populations in the Americas.
We are witnessing that moment in history when genocidal warmongering in *The Atlantic* stresses the “obligations” of the “oppressed” to be murdered without resistance. Unhinged.
A list of scholarships for Palestinian Students & Researchers in NL from with a database of opportunities:
Please amplify and ask friends from Palestine to consider applying.
And whilst I’m handing out recommends, please read it in conjunction w/ The White Possessive (Moreton-Robinson). Just to clarify - both books should be read for their individual merit as well as for being part of wider scholarship in decolonial thought from diverse geolocations.
Very unpopular opinion: Did Oyewumi not insist that the category of woman and gender both need rethinking? So are we still making stars of ‘feminist knowledge’ (Oyewumi) purveyors of the north? Please give credit where it’s due. Thank you.
Illustrative of what I cite regularly:
The trouble with dead white men is that some are not men, many not white, and an alarming number not even dead.
- Qadri Ismail
India has become the country with the highest number of people in jail for partaking in social protests! In a fairly short span of time.
And this should scare all of us, all over the world.
Germany has succeeded in piping out the burden of antisemitism onto its Muslim population, the current rebound of its far-right notwithstanding.
Germany needs to stop Germany-ing.
In awe of our friend, co-thinker and comrade. He has been reinstated. His commitment to opposing settler-colonial oppression remained unwavering. Academia has few like him.
On today … for every coloniser, everywhere:
Perhaps the most important reason for confidence and for revolutionary optimism … is that the peoples of the Third World have not been dehumanized in spite of everything, in spite of slavery, in spite of colonialism. 1/2
Assa Traoré invited by the Uni of Cambridge won't sit well with several French academics, philosophers and politicians. The reprisal will be colossal. Not direct but insidiously covert. I sincerely hope she finds the support she deserves!
There's a whole PhD waiting to be written on successive French gov's policing of Muslim women's/schoolgirls' attire & the silence of white French feminists if not collusion. Today, France goes one step further in restricting what schoolgirls perceived as Muslim wear to school.
Our month draws to a close; a reminder:sexuality is one part of your life. You're entitled to allocate it the weight you wish. Coming-out-visibility for many trans/queer folk runs a fatal risk. Global north doesn't get to dictate what narratives fit queerness. No queer prescript.
All of us have lost white friends to racism. Not new. We’ve oft ignored it, following the politics of disengagement. However, outrage trends with ‘I had a black friend’ nonsense.
#IHadAWhiteFriend
is a valid response to it. And it’s breaking my heart to read of folks experience!
There are several colonial ways to accomplish epistemicide. Obliteration, substitution, erasure, overwriting, and naked violence of destruction. There's not a single university in Gaza unaffected by Israeli shelling.
'Infuriating' is a euphemism.
The Israeli military just blew up the University of Palestine in Gaza City with 315 mines. All the universities in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed. We need a full academic boycott.
The way girlboss feminists & military gayboys have showcased their attachment to murder, plunder & annihilation of an entire people & region, the terminology required necessitates elaboration. It illustrates necrofeminism & necroqueerness: the impulse to produce disposable lives.
Reckon the US should kick off a Dalit, Bahujan, Muslim, Kashmiri Lives Matter movt so that the Indian cricket team takes note. Because performing solidarity w/ Black Lives Matter before their matches, the gangrenous anti-Blackness in India notwithstanding, is a nugatory gesture.
And never forget, not only did French uni reject Fanon’s PhD thesis, France banned The Wretched upon publication.
Macron says the language of decolonisation is French, but one of France’s best critical thinkers is not mandatory reading in school nor university. France is wild.
Given the default attachment to whiteness on Mastodon & the surveillance of BIPOCs, might I suggest that if Mastodon were a book title, this would be it (see image).
This one for my BIPOC friends on here. Nah, we don’t give anyone the comfort of our silence.💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I wonder how many rocks would Edward Said be throwing at the occupation were he alive today. Do us a favour, please read, reread Said's, The Question of Palestine (1979), esp. 1.II (pp. 15-36) & 2.I (pp. 56-82), for a rigorous historical account.
Edward Said, born, 1 Nov 1935.
That a Black French woman gains success at *Washington Post* and opines on France ruffles more than a few feathers. Tear her down with mendacious assertions is the mantra followed by those holding on to power. For how long, though?
I stand in solidarity with
@RokhayaDiallo
Suppressing decades of rigorous scholarship and suspending academics who do not toe the ‘official’ line of the geopolitical west is harmful to all academics.
@Jairo_I_Funez
is an outstanding scholar of decolonial thinking.
"To be silent equates to complicity."
Professor Jairo Fúnez-Flores talks about being suspended from the Texas Tech University for his social media posts on Palestine.
Please once and for all:
There's no feminism, no queerness without standing with the oppressed and standing up to the oppressor. The specious argument of 'they'd kill us for being gay etc' when Palestinian folks are dead and dying in their thousands is an obnoxious deflection.
One of our most principled colleagues, our dear comrade and co-worldmaker of decolonial thinking,
@Jairo_I_Funez
has been viciously attacked by reactionary folks. We stand in solidarity with Jairo and urge you to join us. Please sign and share.
Senegalese folks are out in the streets protesting an unjust gov supported by France in its neo-colonial regalia! Access to the internet is cut! We stand with the mighty people of Senegal.
#FreeSenegal
Academic abstraction of the genocide has commenced; will proliferate in literature courses, such as 'New Writing from Palestine', offered anon across global north universities. From enabling death-to-many through our silence, we'll graduate to embellishing our career portfolios.
So yes, this is official. Amidst all gloom and grief, some personal news. I've been offered a fellowship at the IASH-SSPS (
@IASH_Edinburgh
), U of Edinburgh) on their larger project titled 'Decoloniality'. Be in Edinburgh from May to July 2022. Say hi if you around.
HOW I read the world is informed by WHAT I read. Don't gain the confidence of certain mediocre white academics who turn experts overnight. One of the best defs recently of racialisation, race, & racism appears in Shafi & Nagdee, *Race to the Bottom* (2022). To the point & clear.
In all the mess of elections in France, what has emerged is the gaping chasm of collective illiteracy on race and its effect (racialisation). Successive muzzling of antiracism mobilisation over decades has led to reading racism as a personal shortcoming, an individual trait, 1/2
The video below is an exemplar of what counts. It's not civilisation, culture (inane distinction b/w high/low) nor difference (imposition through colonialism) that matters. In the end it's the 'community' we imagine & these folks know how to create community. This is worldmaking.
The people who have been vilified for so long are the ones showing the world that collectively caring for one another, even during the cruelest of times, is the only way to affirm life. So much for the West's claims of human nature and possessive individualism.
Black French women changing the terms of conversation on racial justice constitutes a victory for human rights advocacy in France & the world. Let this not be an occasion to throw opprobrium but a cause for celebration. Thank you to
@laveritepradama
Assa Traoré and
@RokhayaDiallo
We met June 2000 in a bar, France. July we were off to Shimla, India w/ parents. Time flies. I told him we were from different cultures. He laughed since we had discussed Fanon, Zola & Mariama Bâ.
Me: hmm I'm Indian; my parents will want an Indian boy. Him: I'm as Indian as you.
Beginning of my fellowship - here until the end of July. At the Institute of Advanced Studies in the Humanities, Uni of Edi (
@IASH_Edinburgh
). Say hi if you see me wandering in town.

The Decolonizing Sexualities Network has collated statements of solidarity w/ Palestine in one place.
The Palestine Feminist Collective statement is lit:
"We reaffirm that Palestine is a feminist issue & assert that feminism is incompatible with Zionism."
Recommendation letters = corruption. Just abolish them!
We're exhausted writing them & when we refuse we feel terrible forever!
Who decided that there should be rec letters, really? Almost like character certificate in times of empire that guaranteed the applicant's 'docility'
Thinking of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit PhD scholar who died by suicide 17.01.2016. Rohith's poignant farewell letter is a stark reminder of the operations of biopower. 'My birth is my fatal accident' holds true for all those deemed disposable - him, Adama Traoré, Refaat Alareer & ...
Sexuality studies, queer studies, gender and sexuality studies - none of these fields aims to legitimize child/teen porn. That Qual Research published *that essay* attests to unethical practices of the journal. Their peer-review process requires a rethink!
Read w/ me:
The appointment of an under-qualified white person for a strategic position through which to decolonize the academy demonstrates how structural epicoloniality sustains itself by replicating systems of power & exclusion. It exposes how white & European scholars are 1/3
Please discontinue platforming Tharoor! It’ll be a service to humanity.
Pack him off to Oxford where he delivers speeches on British empire & economics - a subject he neither masters nor cares for to be honest. Spare us for heaven’s sake his platitudes on Sunak, India & hinduism.
