@DavidNSch @imillhiser imagine if—and just hear me out, I realize this sounds like something from a science fiction novel—the water in the pool was cleaned

Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, GA is within a mile of a middle school, an elementary school, and a daycare center. Collins Hill High in Suwanee shares a geofence with an elementary school, Montessori school, community swim club, a park, and an aquatic center.

LLMs don't "know they are LLMs and act as such" because they don't "know" anything, just as they are not "aware" of anything. I really wish we had a different vocabulary to talk about these things, in academia or otherwise.

New paper: We measure *situational awareness* in LLMs, i.e. a) Do LLMs know they are LLMs and act as such? b) Are LLMs aware when they’re deployed publicly vs. tested in-house? If so, this undermines the validity of the tests! We evaluate 19 LLMs on 16 new tasks 🧵

Here's the section of the OpenAI policy on banned usage that was deleted two days ago. In its place is a much more ambiguous general ban on causing "harm" and a very narrow mention of weapons development

@chrismoodycom I then reported multiple articles showing Dataminr uses its access to Twitter data to do exactly the things Twitter's TOS says are prohibited: Providing police surveillance of Black Lives Matter protests and abortion rallies

The automated censorship of newsworthy material on the grounds that it constitutes glorification or material support of terrorism has been happening via this policy for years, and years, and years, and years. Meta is fully aware, and the "mistakes" persist.

Meta removed two of Democracy Now!'s Instagram posts featuring me discussing my @DropSiteNews reporting on Hamas, saying the posts went “against the community guidelines on dangerous individuals and organizations.” Meta later said it was a mistake. 🤔

@chrismoodycom Within a few years, however, a giant loophole was added to Twitter's terms of service for 3rd party developers: Police surveillance, including of "sensitive events" like protests is not allowed... unless Twitter says it is allowed.

Last year Meta claimed it had launched a machine learning tool to detect violent incitement in Hebrew. If it's unable to flag "Death to the Arabs" or "we will return to our land and kill all the Palestinians," one must question what this hostile speech classifier actually does.

Something that continues to confound me re: TikTok sale/ban discourse is the way "The TikTok Algorithm" is discussed with technical awe usually reserved for like, the secret to building the hydrogen bomb. It's video recommendations.

Mohammad tells me he felt as if he was singled out on the basis of his religion and ethnicity, as the only Muslim and person of Middle Eastern descent who distributed the petition; other Googlers who sent the very same email were not approached by HR, employees say.
