Are there any good theories about why this happens? E.g., why does the tech focus on automating creative work as opposed to automating the really tedious things? Is it just since the creative work makes for flashier headlines? I feel like there is something deeper here...

You know what the biggest problem with pushing all-things-AI is? Wrong direction. I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes.

Interesting paper - "by introducing position tokens (e.g., "3 10e1 2"), transformers learn to accurately add and subtract numbers up to 60 digits" Another angle - exposing model to "meaning behind the symbols" does wonders for performance. How to do this in NLU as well?

It is 2020 and I still have to argue with reviewers that gridworlds are perfectly suitable for testing the limits of current RL SotA. Some photorealistic 3D environment might be many orders of magnitude easier to solve than complex procgen environments like MiniGrid or NetHack.

@ACMHT @daostack @InferenceActive @CSenseMakers @HyadataLab @HumaneTech_ @tristanharris @jbakcoleman 8/Agents modify the env, which affects same/other agents, constituting a cybernetic feedback loop. Pretty much all large scale coordination must rely on stigmergy (including for humans), so we really want to create healthy and well functioning stigmergic infrastructure!

@ACMHT @daostack @InferenceActive @CSenseMakers @HyadataLab 5/opaque information ecologies, where network data and algorithms are effectively hidden away from public/scientific/ethical oversight. Opaque platforms are involved in a host of deeply problematic social phenomena, as noted by many @HumaneTech_ @tristanharris @jbakcoleman

@MatanField I see the logic, but I want to challenge it. You're making an implicit assumption that "eventually" the market will find good solutions. How are you so sure? There are many reasons to question that assumption.. Markets suffer pathologies that may prevent that from ever happening

Crazy AF. Paper studies @_akhaliq and @arankomatsuzaki paper tweets and finds those papers get 2-3x higher citation counts than control. They are now influencers 😄 Whether you like it or not, the TikTokification of academia is here!

This looks interesting! They find that hard masking to remove potential attention pairs helps Transformers in compositional generalization tasks. This resonates with cog-sci findings that attentional capacity bottleneck is a feature, not a bug. See also >

Just remarkable how easily you can swap "cell" with "company" and get a coherent analogy between capitalism and cancer

When the output is beautiful, it's all the model. When the output is racist, discriminatory, or otherwise unjust, it's the training data, the filtering, or society

This paper from Firston, Tenenbaum et. al looks 🔥 Active inference models *select their own data*- provides an interesting perspective on the age old q of RL vs supervised.

I'm very happy to announce that our paper on "proxy failure" — analogues of Goodhart's Law ranging from molecular biology to brains to business to ecology — has been made available at Behavioral and Brain Sciences. A thread. 🧵 .

Very interesting paper by @arielbstarr et. al! Spatial understanding scaffolds concrete->abstract word learning in children. @FelixHill84 @AndrewLampinen would be interesting to see how embodied agents handle the daxy ball experiment. :) ...

The classic “Information wants to be free” (Stewart Brand, 1984) needs updating in our age of exponential information explosion. Access to information ≠ ability to *make sense* of information Next level: “Information wants to be FAIR” 🚀

Those of us who value truth must organize as effectively as the propagandists. As they pollute our information ecosystem, we must create healthier epistemic environments.
