We shouldn't be asking Taiwan to tone down for fear of 'angering' China. Taiwan is the victim here. It is normal for countries to have exchanges. What is not normal is for China to threaten Taiwan. China is the aggressor here. Victim-blaming only emboldens the aggressor.

In order to stop allowing such an idea to be propagated, it is therefore important for other countries to interact with Taiwan normally, and this is why not making a fuss over Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is important. This normalizes the fact that Taiwan is an independent country.

Today, I learnt that CCP used to recognize Taiwan as an independent country between 1928 and 1943. This means that even before the People's Republic of China (PRC) existed and before it was created by CCP, CCP recognized Taiwan's independence.

The good thing about what happened these few days is that it has made people globally more aware of Taiwan's situation and helped clarify the facts. China as it is known today was only founded by the CCP party in 1949, and since its founding, never ruled Taiwan.

Taiwan today has therefore never been controlled by CCP, and CCP does not have any claims over Taiwan. Taiwanese have also exercised their democratic rights to elect a government of their own choosing, and based on surveys, people here see themselves as Taiwanese, not Chinese.

To Taiwanese, the issue of Taiwan's identity is thus settled: Taiwan is a normal independent country. However, China has blocked other countries from establishing normal relations with Taiwan, which allows it to push the idea that Taiwan isn't independent and belongs to China.

When other countries call Taiwan a "country", China threatens them with sanctions or trade curbs, and when Russia does it, China says, "Russia as a sovereign state has the right to make its own decisions." So all other countries are not sovereign? Such complicity to dictatorship.

People who want to #StopAsianHate & anti-imperialism should stand with Taiwan too, for Taiwan is oppressed as well. Taiwan has often been discussed as a pawn between 2 superpowers, and if we make the same mistake of treating Taiwan as a pawn, then we are denying Taiwan's agency.

Please stop using this China-is-communist/US-is-capitalist dichotomy. This IS NOT a real dichotomy. China is not communist. It is capitalist. Like the United States. The 'more' accurate dichotomy is that US is (somewhat more) democratic while China is authoritarian.

As such, CCP has no claims over Taiwan. Prior to CCP, it was the KMT political party which controlled most parts of China. It later fled to Taiwan and controlled Taiwan, but since Taiwan democratized from the late-1980s, Taiwanese have voted KMT out of government.

What a silly thing to say. I'm not Taiwanese but my view of Taiwan's history aligns with DPP because it's objective. Taiwan has never been ruled by CCP, Mao Zedong supported Taiwan's independence. No one outside Taiwan calls Taiwan the Republic of China. Everyone calls it Taiwan.

For me, the DPP's massive defeat at today's local election in Taiwan is a sign people are highly dissatisfied with DPP's performance on local issues. In a study conducted in Sep 2022, when Taiwanese are asked about the issues they were most concerned about, it was the economy.

This explains why I was perplexed when I saw the video that (1) he was allowed to run up the ramp & the police did nothing, (2) he was so close but he threw the cocktail in front of the police, not at them & (3) the police didn't fire tear gas at him but further away to the front

This is why I keep saying we cannot tolerate any authoritarian regime, no matter how small or 'soft'. Authoritarians like Hungary, Russia and China see Singapore succeed, and they know they can too. You cannot appease authoritarians, because it will bite you in the back.

To me, Taiwan losing its tourism appeal is a reflection of its economic stagnation and unbridled capitalism taken to extremes. Many of Taiwan's tourist attractions are not well-maintained & its hotel prices are raised too high for the value Taiwan offers.
