I like the mechanic that if you don't meet Araj or help with Yurgir that Astarion will "break up" with you in Act 3 bc "your services aren't worth the cost anymore." Both moments cause him to self-reflect in his newfound freedom (cont.)

Lack of Vulnerability: Even when AA tells you that he loves you, it's a statement followed by a "is that what you want to hear?" It's reminiscent of his Act 1 romance scenes where he flips your questions back on you and says what you want to hear.

I wish I could remember the person smart enough to point this out so I could credit them, but I was thinking of the juxtaposition of the Spawn and AA routes at the end of The Pale Elf. As a spawn, Astarion kneels with you. As AA, he tells you to kneel before him.

He acts as if enslaving the brain is all but certain, and I'm also reminded of AA's reaction to embrace durge. If you tell him you'll try to spare him when you slaughter the world, he responds with the "naked on my lap" line. He should be very, very afraid of you.

To me, both versions are still Astarion at his core. Both versions are noticeably less theatrical than pre-ritual, but while Spawn still copes through humor, AA copes with his new invincible persona. I look forward to the delulu on my evil run.

Please note this only takes into account the events of the game and not long-term lore. I'm aware AA would get stronger over time, but he isn't now. I would probably dig him 300 years from the events of the game in a sequel but we may never know.

Overall, I think his story is supposed to be messy, uncomfortable, and not for everyone. There are some romances I enjoy and some I don't and the reason we have so many is to have options. You're not bad or wrong for not picking a particular option.

I get why people want to change this, but trauma is a messy road. He has unhealthy coping mechanisms and habits to unlearn and his story shows that you can realize this and stop.

@chthonicvampire Someday I'll go on about how I love Minthara. Granted, she does have different life experience than AA, but she is definitely more sure of herself and wise. After Ketheric and Orin, she learned that she wasn't careful enough and walked into a lion's den.

@theothrows @diannaeanderson Same - I didn't do an illegal drug until I was like 28 (and it was weed). I did date a guy at 14 that I totally didn't want to, but everyone said it was a good idea. I also went to church all the time when what I really wanted was a therapist.

The kinds of things people talk about as scenarios are great for a medium that’s not an RPG video game. As much as I joke that this game is the “Astarion dating simulator,” it’s not. The above structure is amazing as is to tell his story.

Speaking of choices, if you keep him a spawn, and ask if he regrets stopping the Black Mass, he says he made the right choice, but he regrets his options (kill 7,000 people or live in the shadows). He's always been between a rock and a hard place.

His scenes are ways to test out the player (like Shadowheart). He’s testing your answers and reactions to see what kind of person you are. He has no problems offering up his thoughts on other topics, but with you, he often tells you what you want to hear (the star-gazing scene).
