More significant census result is identity: British only, 31.86%, Irish only 29.13%, Northern Irish only, 19.78%. A decade ago: British 40%, Irish 25%, NI 21%. That’s a big tumble in British identity.

Notional Catholics outnumbering notional Protestants hardly makes a united Ireland inevitable. But it's a warning to unionists that they need to court the middle ground and moderate nationalists before it's too late. They've known this for decades. And they just can't do it.

Spent the evening interviewing mainly teenage loyalists in Newtownabbey and Belfast. All convinced Protestants have become 2nd class citizens and that if they don't cause ructions they'll continue to be walked over. Political failure has bred nihilism. Really dispiriting.

Key to understanding this is that it makes NI sound much more religious than it now is: The real growth over recent decades has been in the irreligious - but the census uses those people's parents' religion to allow them to be assigned to the Protestant or Catholic 'side'.
