13th District State Senator | Senate Black Caucus Chair | An organizer fighting for public safety for all, not a few | Cash Bail Has Ended | Pronouns: He/Him
This is Miracle. She’s 18 years old and an organizer for
@GKMC18
. She is fighting gun violence everyday. Last week I offered her an internship.
She is just over 5 ft, 100 pounds. Tonight a police officer beat her. Knocked out her teeth.
I’m sad, angry, and disgusted.
Dear Mom and Dad,
Remember when people told you that you shouldn’t have adopted me. I ain’t perfect. But I hope to tell other kids who are told they are worthless by others that it doesn’t take bootstraps, it takes community. Thank You.
Your Son,
Senator Robert Peters
I can’t get over how small Adam Toledo was. I can’t get over the fact that the officer said “shots fired” as if he was shot at and then proceeded to ask a kid he shot in the chest if he was “alright.”
I’m so tired of this. Adam Toledo should still be with us today.
I’m endorsing
@BernieSanders
for President because we need a political revolution in this country. There are a lot of good candidates in this race, but I believe that Bernie is the most committed to truly ending mass incarceration.
#NotMeUs
After I endorsed
@BernieSanders
, he called me and legit quoted “Ain’t no stopping us now.” It was amazing! So, I know for a fact this dude lets loose.
This campaign is on the move, join us!
🚨 🚨 “Our revolution includes dancing,” Sen.
@BernieSanders
said at the end of his prepared remarks tonight. He’s making good on that statement now in Manchester, NH, dancing to “ after a union solidarity dinner.
Why in a city like Chicago - do we justify violence against our own youth in order to protect a statue? This is not the path to a safe and just Chicago.
I think the thing that gets me so angry is how much Black Bernie supporters get erased when Bernie is brought up. We won’t be erased to fit your cynical narrative.
"I've learned that when *we build movements* that make bold and visionary calls there are there are politicians such as Bernie who will be willing to stand on the side of justice no matter the cost" Destiny Harris

We have a choice between a constant failure who palls with right wingers in Paul Vallas and someone who has a broad base of support and a progressive, unifying vision for Chicago in Brandon Johnson.
Brandon is Better. Let’s make history!
BRANDON JOHNSON vs PAUL VALLAS.
A clear choice for Chicagoans.
Brandon is an authentic, principled leader raising a family on the West Side.
Paul Vallas is a failed Republican career politician who doesn't even live in the city.
A call today:
Person: Hello is this Senator Peters office?
Me: This is Senator Peters.
Person: Oh, I didn’t expect to get your cell. This is Angela Davis.
Me: The legendary Angela Davis?
Angela Davis: *Laughs* Yes. I’m calling about Anthony Gay’s bill.
Me:
Thank you,
@BernieSanders
. You expanded movement politics into a whole new level. This virus highlights fighting for someone we don’t know.
So, we must beat Trump in November and we must continue to grow and expand movement politics for years to come.
A reminder of who Paul Vallas is. He will cut pensions, destroy schools, and hang with dangerous racists. In fact, he and his right wing friend here think being anti-racist is causing crime. Don’t believe me, just listen:
This is great work by
@shaunking
and
@VicMensa
and a reminder that our kids need investment over incarceration. Safety isn’t baiting folks with trucks full of goods. Safety is making sure folks have what they need to lead a dignified life.

cases to a single person who attended five bars/nightclubs in Seoul.
Chicago and Illinois have the best ambassadors you can have right now.
After years of negative and depressing trolls attacking our city and state it is great to see leaders fight back with love and respect for our people.
Proud to be a Chicagoan.
Proud to be an Illinoisan.
There is a very clear fight in this country against a rising right wing.
Chicago’s municipal election is very important in that fight.
A supposed “Democrat” built his career rebound with the most violent and miserable right wingers in the state. That sets a bad precedent.
According to (admittedly flawed) FBI data, the U.S. is about as safe as it’s ever been. So why is tough-on-crime rhetoric on the rise? Appeal Research & Projects Editor
@EthanSCorey
breaks the issue down in our inaugural "Ask the Appeal" column:
The ability to survive is not because of some miracle. Survival requires community.
We need to strengthen our neighborhoods. From our schools to our environment to incarceration, this fight is about safety and dignity for all.
This is our 21st century golden rule moment.
My mom was a rather abusive alcoholic and she struggled with a lot of mental health issues.
As a kid, my sanctuary was a public park hanging with my friends. It saved my life even as I got myself in trouble.
What an impressive display of organizing by Chicago students.
It’s truly something to behold as we head into the long MLK weekend which will be filled with empty quotes.
Y’all ready for the games!?:
“Sure Vallas likes racist tweets
…and hanging with fashy orgs
…and enjoys right wing interviews
…and has had a history of destroying public schools in 4 cities
…and has failed at every job he’s ever had
But Brandon Johnson is a teacher.”
Whether people see
#DontLookUp
as a climate movie or a covid movie doesn’t really matter.
What the movie points out is that we are fully capable of stopping a whole host of crises but there is money to be made and poll numbers to bump.
Let it to be known. To be a Democrat is to stand strong on a new vision for public safety for all. The failed conservative “tough on crime” approach must be dropped.
We did it.
After more than a year of knocking on doors, making phone calls, and hosting meet and greets, I’m excited to announce that we are projected to win yesterday’s election! 1/6
We keep seeing the same results over and over again. We need to stop thinking institutions built within an unjust system will ever be fair. It’s clear we need systemic change.
This picture is from 65 years ago today. Emmett Till's killers acquitted after a jury deliberated for a little more than an hour. sixty-five years. Today.
This is absolutely horrific. Yes, we gotta get Trump out of executive office but he expanded a right wing movement. Defeating this movement is going to be a long term fight.
Let’s be honest Paul Vallas is considered a wonk purely due to his vibe and aesthetic.
The facts are simple: this is a man who can’t manage his personal social media accounts let alone municipal and school budgets.
Send him back to AM Radio April 4th.
I firmly believe that Chicago is in a unique position to be a model for the 21st century American city.
We must take on the climate challenges, build vast affordable housing, reimagine our public safety policies, expand public transportation, and protect our beautiful lakefront.
Good Morning!
Paul Vallas has never seen a pension he didn’t want to cut.
Paul Vallas has never seen a neighborhood school he’s ever wanted to keep open.
Paul Vallas has never seen a budget he couldn’t mismanage.
Last Sunday, I was chilling at the Chicago Sky game. I saw the mayor and said hello.
First, she said to me was how “we’re gonna **** her.” Then, how this “would be a political problem for us.”
I laughed and responded, “what about the game?” 🤷🏽♂️
She’s not a democracy champion.
Sure, I’ve passed over 35 pieces of legislation including many that were first in the country.
Sure, I’ve moved millions in infrastructure and violence prevention dollars.
Did it all without a college degree — until now.
Finally fulfilled a promise to my late dad and uncle.
"During the 35 years I've been on this planet there's only one candidate who had had my back:
@BernieSanders
. In the last 30-40 years we've seen disinvestment... told to pick us up by bootstraps that didn't exist...Bernie took lonely votes and fought for all of us"
@robertjpeters
This type of localized nationalism does nothing to uplift working class communities of color and only feeds the worst of right wing politics.
Chicago must unite and move beyond our segregation and divisions.
Woodland residents gather to protest against the opening of a shelter for migrants at a former school in the neighborhood.
“There’s plenty of room in Little Village for their people,” a resident said.
.
@Brandon4Chicago
knows the struggles of working families and the need to stand up for strong unions, make the rich pay their fair share, to invest in affordable housing, quality health care, better schools, and good jobs. That's why I'm proud to endorse him for mayor of Chicago.
We’re building an intergenerational, multiracial working class movement in Illinois. Check out the diverse, beautiful set of endorsements for
@BernieSanders
.
#BerniesBack
Many folks participating in this strike will face even more abuse. We must stand in solidarity with the working folks tearing down the modern slavery that is our racist, classist prisons.
#PrisonStrike

Reminder Paul Vallas is a guy who quotes right wing blogs and hangs with far right groups who are driven by anti-lgbtq, anti-black, and anti-immigrant hatred.
Just a reminder, if you’re concerned with such things.
I want Bernie to win for many deep and personal reasons but I also want to see a range of grifters minimized from our collective political spaces. They exist to say “no, we can’t” to the hopes and struggles of organizing change in this world.
Our model has been updated, although one needs to treat it with a lot of caution since it's making guesses about the reaction to NH that may or may not resemble reality.
The main takeaway is that the chances of "no majority" are up to 1 in 3.
SCOOP with
@swin24
: Despite projecting outward confidence, Trump has repeatedly been asking top advisers about how
@BernieSanders
is polling and would likely perform in critical battleground states *including Pennsylvania* in 2020
Racism, classism and sexism is a public safety issue.
The folks who have to work.
The folks who didn’t get PPP/Stimulus.
The folks who lack housing security.
The folks who face overpolicing.
The folks who are getting sick.
They are working class Black and Latinx folks.
Since I’m a glutton for punishment and I’m sure I’m gonna get the most unhinged, crime weirdo replies but:
I would look at the behavior of young people as a political act and statement. It’s a mass protest against poverty and segregation.
Rest in peace to my mentions.
I remember four years ago when so many of us were being laughed at about
@BernieSanders
and our movement political organizing. Here we are winning Nevada and getting horrible analogies from pundits. They ain’t laughing anymore. Let’s keep organizing, join our movement!
The reason I just said on MS that the diversity of NV is proving to be Sanders' strength:
White
Sanders 28%
Buttigieg 19%
Klobuchar 14%
Warren 14%
Biden 13%
Non-white
Sanders 44%
Biden 21%
Steyer 11%
Warren 8%
Buttigieg 7%
So, there was real debate about sharing this racist, misogynistic call made to our office. I’m deciding to share this because these vile attacks aren’t going to scare us or slow us down.
We will win the safety and justice we deserve.
Oh no shotspotter is ending. Means the clearance rate for gun violence is gonna go from like 10% to about 10%.
It’s wild that we have people overselling magical tech but we can’t stop the weapons industry.
The NFTs of public safety.
It’s not whether I wanted guilt or not, it’s that so many people will never be afforded the opportunities given to someone who killed people, bragged about it, and became a national white supremacist hero.
This is a perfect example of how fucked our criminal legal system is.
Turns out all those right wing, “tough on crime” attacks led to Chicagoans sending the strongest progressive candidate to the runoff.
It seems that strategy is working. Keep doing it. Keep spending that money.
The fact that Lula made this a core part of his message in a state visit is quite wild to see.
Whether it’s a Bolsa Familia or the Child Tax Credit, we must fight for policies that lift up Black and Latine working class kids.
This is what the attacks on the SAFE-T Act are all about.
I never thought in my life I would experience a modicum of the backlash seen at the end of the civil rights movement.
But here we are…
We need housing, healthcare, education from early childhood-college, and direct investment to be seen as a right to bring about the safety/dignity we need. Money bail only proves someone is guilty of being poor, it’s s not going to keep us safe.
#EndMoneyBail
Moments after
@RepKellyCassidy
called today “Robert Peters Day” since he was the lead sponsor on all 4 of the criminal justice bills signed into law today, including banning police from lying to minors in interrogations.
Of course it makes me nervous, but we can’t be afraid to:
-call for a negotiated ceasefire.
-call for the release of hostages.
-speak up.
Here’s why I stood with fellow Jews to call for a ceasefire:
In Illinois if a man with a handgun threatened the Illinois Governor he wouldn’t be able to post bail.
He’d be detained.
I hope Wisconsin considers the Pretrial Fairness Act.
Personal Thread: Personally, the role and impact of the Willie Horton ad on my life makes it hard to even know how to feel anything other than numbness. I do hope that when we talk about legacy that we tell the full picture. 1/4
After first saying he would track down the campaign volunteers who liked bigoted posts, Paul Vallas now tells
@cbschicago
his
@paulvallas
account was hacked
Illinois has become the first state to pass a bill that will ban police from lying to youth during interrogations. Experts say the practice can lead to false confessions and wrongful convictions. The bill is expected to be signed into law in coming weeks.
I promised my dying father I would get my degree done. 13 years after walking in the ceremony. 11 years after my fathers passing. Almost a decade stuck with one credit short.
I am finally a
@KState
graduate.
Two things:
1) We have a candidate who said teaching Black history causes crime.
2) We have a chance to make Black history electing
@Brandon4Chicago
mayor of the city of Chicago.
Progressives in the rest of the country need to learn. I am sick and tired of hearing about mid level progress on the east coast. In the heart of the country, this coalition made history! This coalition right here is the model.
Today, the Illinois Supreme Court issued the strongest possible decision finding the Pretrial Fairness Act constitutional and directing courts across the state to implement the law and end the use of money bond on September 18, 2023. 🧵
The President should maybe look towards JB and Brandon Johnson not Kathy Hochul and Eric Adams.
Lurching hard to the right is both bad policy and bad politics.
But hey, we got El Chapo!
The fight for mass liberation, ending mass incarceration, and saving lives requires us to boldly fight for collective and systemic change.
Employees at a drug company accused of bribing doctors rapped and danced around a giant bottle of a highly addictive fentanyl spray in a 2015 video meant to motivate sales reps into getting patients on higher doses.
The State of Illinois has given the Bears a lot of government subsidies. We still owe money on the Chicago Bears-designed and renovated Soldier Field. It’s clear the Bears are going around looking for new corporate welfare programs to subsidize their new stadium.
The Chicago Bears are now floating the possibility of building a stadium in Naperville. Arlington Heights "no longer our singular focus," team says. Fact is, they made a big expensive land purchase and have a tough road ahead to make the finances work
Kenosha, Chicago, Minneapolis, New York, wherever. Democrat or Republican, it doesn’t matter. All I know is this shit is too exhausting and there needs to be more than symbolic gestures. Damn.
#BlackLivesMatter
This is great stuff! Especially since we just had the Grocery Initiative Act signed that puts $20 million dollars to help create municipal owned grocery stores.
Interesting
@KState
Fact: Did you know multiple rural Kansas towns have municipal grocery stores? This policy works.
NEWS: Mayor Brandon Johnson has started a group to explore the possibility of a municipally owned grocery store in Chicago, a city with vast stretches on South and West Side without good shopping options.
My chief of staff saw her rent go up $700 for no reason and was forced out of her apartment. My constituent service coordinator is on section 8 vouchers and when I tried to give her more hours she balked due to the impact that would have on her support. We need a

“I am the conduit for their (the movements) organized power and governing position. And they are the conduit for me being able to govern the way I want to. And if those are tied together, it makes it easier to get things done under the dome.”
These apps and some social media accounts are just recreating the worst elements of the racism in Birth of a Nation and Willie Horton.
They’re not contributing to improving public safety but they are hitting every reactionary button.
@GeeDee215
As a transracial adoptee, so many thoughts and feelings. Especially about how systemically this feels like more of a thing under feel good neoliberalism. Like we cut services, increased incarceration, and destroyed public sector labor but hey adoption is like a social service 🤷🏽♂️
Sure Vallas likes racist tweets
…and hanging with fashy orgs
…and enjoys right wing interviews
…and has had a history of destroying public schools in 4 cities
…and has failed at every job he’s ever hel…
Just asked Vallas: What part of those tweet likes are you attributing to hackers?
Vallas: “I don't want to be distracted by issues that are really not relevant right now”
Q: Then why did yesterday you —
Vallas: “Other questions?”
Well, I’m shocked! We finally get an establishment poll that asks questions like this.
Tough on crime is a losing policy and a losing position.
@Brandon4Chicago
destroyed a lot of an established confirmation bias.
Karen Lewis was a freedom fighter and she taught us how to fight. You’re an inspiration who sat across from powerful people, looked them in the eye, and didn’t back down. Thank you and rest in power!
