I'm a professor at
@Tulane
.
I was present at the Pro-Palestinian protest on campus. I observed Tulane students engaging in peaceful & nonviolent demonstration.
Lift suspensions & drop charges
We condemn the violent & disproportionate police response.
We stand with our students.
I just hit "submit" my first academic job application, so I'm officially on the market! 🎉
Seconds beforehand, my mom sent me a job advertisement in my hometown for doggie day care.
I’m thrilled to share that in 2023-2024, I will be joining
@Tulane
@PolisciTulane
as an Assistant Professor!
I couldn’t be more excited to move to New Orleans after the rest of my year here at
@NiehausCenter
.
I'm thrilled to announce I'll be spending next year at
@PrincetonSPIA
Niehaus Center as a Postdoctoral Researcher!
Incredibly grateful to those who made this possible. Because it takes a village, y'all!
I study repressive regimes… and these tactics today were a little too familiar. I’ve read a lot about them. Violent repression, censorship… not pillars of democracy.
I am so happy and proud to announce that I successfully defended my dissertation yesterday! The last 24 hours have been full of adrenaline, crying, all the emotions, and celebrating with friends and family near & far!
This language doesn’t represent the peaceful protests happening on campus.
Having mounted police charge at students setting up tents is unacceptable.
As a human right scholar, I support the right to peacefully protest and have been observing this evening.
Excited to bring my first award home from
#APSA2022
. I had the best time getting great feedback, catching up with old friends, and meeting new ones! Thanks, Montreal! Until March…
It’s the season for job market announcements. I’m always happy to see good news but also think of those who aren’t there now.
I see you. If you’re struggling with these announcements, unsure of your next moves, I’ve been there.
Be kind to yourself and take the space you need.

The Section has chosen Rachel Schoner as the recipient for this year's Best Graduate Paper Award for, "Confronting a Repressive Regime: Individual Petitions in the Human Rights Committee." Please join us in congratulating Rachel for this achievement!
I'm thrilled my article "Empowering your victims: Why repressive regimes allow individual petitions in international organizations" is published at
@The_PEIO
!
I find repressive govs allow petitions bc intl demand but there are domestic costs. [brief🧵]
Today, as I officially start my year as a postdoc at
@NiehausCenter
, marks the end of my lifetime as a student.
I couldn't be more excited for this transition and my time at
@PrincetonSPIA
.
It’s happening! Ventured to campus for the first time today (and yes, my life is mostly still in boxes).
Excited to start this year at
@NiehausCenter
!
Rachel studies non-state actor access in international institutions. Her job market paper finds that individual participation in international law improves human rights practices.
@rjschoner
#psjminfo
@JohnHolbein1
I’m a postdoc at
@NiehausCenter
, new PhD from
@UCSanDiego
. I study how victims of human rights abuse participate in global politics. When & why they submit complaints to the UN vs repressive gvrnts. And the effect this has on human rights
2 weeks and 3,000 miles later, I've completed my coast (San Diego) to coast (Virginia Beach) road trip. This country is so big, beautiful & diverse.
Highlights include many national parks, white water rafting on the Colorado river & meeting up w/ many friends & family on the way
Our next Junior Law and Politics Research Community Public Law panel will be this Wed October 27 from 12:30-1:30 EDT featuring
@rjschoner
(PhD Candidate, UCSD) and discussant Rachel Cichowski (Professor, Washington). Abstract below! Sign up to join us:
Benefits of experiencing seasons again: a beautiful New Jersey fall on campus.
I’ll try and remember these good times when I bundle up for winter soon.
For those who aren't aware:
California prohibits using state funds to travel to TN bc its discriminatory gender & sexuality laws. So, I'm not at
@isanet
#ISA2022
And I just couldn't do another virtual conference (which seems like a good decision with these tech issues).
Today I spent my 50 minutes of intl law class on the conflict. They just read about humanitarian law, customary principles & Geneva Conventions.
There's a lot to unpack & it's emotional and devastating to read/talk about. But, I'm proud of their respectful, thoughtful engagement
I’m officially a New Orleanian! With the tractor trailer with my worldly belongings blocking my little one way street (sorry new neighbors).
Send me all your food recommendations!
I recently got a rejection after the third time applying for the same fellowship. So, for all y’all fellow grad students applying and grinding and getting rejections- I see you, and it’s a nice big club.
I've already sent my dissertation to my Committee & the defense is less than two weeks away.
Doesn't matter, I'm still having graduation stress dreams about Spanish class.
Some folks are starting to share good news this season.
Just want to make space for those who aren't there now. If you're having a hard time scrolling through these announcements, I see you. I've been there.
Take care of yourself first, and take time off this platform if needed.
Finally, I acknowledge my privilege and luck. So many things are out of our control as candidates.
I was on the market last year and didn’t land a TT job. It’s a long process, which not everyone can afford. It’s brutal. Having friends also on the market kept me sane.
Join us in Dodd 162 on Thurs, January 25 (12:30-1:45pm) for what will be a fascinating event with
@rjschoner
(
@tulane
). We'll learn about her research on how victims of human rights abuse engage in UN institutions to pressure repressive govts. Register:
As I quickly read and write emails now, I think back about the unnecessary careful thought (and often anxiety) that went into every little email I sent to advisors in my early days.
How times change.
I just booked my fifth trip on Amtrak since moving to NJ last year. Although Amtrak has its many problems, the NE Corridor is the best track in the States.
I'll definitely miss it.
I've cancelled my APSA plans.
If you're a grad student/non-TT scholar working on similar research & no longer attending, I'm happy to connect & provide feedback.
I luckily booked a non-striking hotel, so my plan was to go to LA and not cross picket lines, even if that involved no APSA at all.
But now, all signs pointing to cancelling altogether.
No one is free until we are all free. Liberation.
I get chills when I see videos of faculty protecting protesting students. A light in the darkness.
I support these protestors and their freedoms to peacefully assembly.
I got COVID last week, after avoiding it for over 2 years.
It felt like I got hit by a bus. Today is day 5, fever is finally gone. Fatigue is slowly getting better. This is no joke.
Thankful for vaccines & kiddos can finally get the jabs soon too!
It’s been one month since I’ve moved to NJ. Good day to get back into baking on the east coast.
Started off with a family classic- chocolate chip banana bread
I am very sad to report flip flop season is officially over.
For the first time, as a CA to NJ transplant, I can no longer run errands in sandals, toes exposed. This year is a hard year, one with many lifestyle adjustments.
Periodic reminder: Never refer to someone who has defended their dissertation as "Ms."
And yes, this includes in recommendation letters. If you're going to use last name formality, use their earned title "Dr."
Never been more stoked for a needle in my life 💉
In line now with
@maricarvalb
And shout out to
@ClaireAdida
for volunteering!! Thank you to all the volunteers who are making this run so seamlessly
I've stolen
@hakeemjefferson
's final project prompt for my intl law class: explain a class concept to a lay audience.
Reading through proposals now. A student is describing TikTok to me and its trends. LOLing but actually, I need the context.
@ProfHansNoel
I am a PhD Candidate at UC San Diego researching how political actors mobilize in international law to change behavior of repressive governments.
My diss explores how victims of abuse and organizations file individual petitions in the United Nations.
Finally, I acknowledge my privilege and luck. So many things are out of our control as candidates.
I was on the market last year and didn’t land a TT job. It’s a long process, which not everyone can afford. It’s brutal. Having friends also on the market kept me sane.
I had a wonderful long weekend in DC and might have found my favorite spot in the city- the US Botanic Garden.
Got some good inspiration for my next apartment…
Stoked to travel to
@APSAtweets
Montreal this fall! First in-person conference since Feb 2020.
Thanks so much to
@ginopauselli
for organizing a terrific panel on International law, institutions, and human rights. And to
@ErikVoeten
and
@c_hillebrecht
for discussing
@caredunton
I used the survive or die game from
@Victor_Asal
to teach realism. It was fun, easy & effective.
All you need is some index cads (or something similar)
Academic Twitter: What's your advice for reviewing the same manuscript for a 2nd journal (after recommending reject the first time)?
If core concerns remain, do I copy and paste those concerns?
(Editor has confirmed they do want me to review manuscript again)
I am moving to New Jersey in one month. Strong abortion protections. Same offer to anyone.
Abortion is a human right.
Thank you for the language
@DrBritWilliams
I live in Vermont now. Vermont does not have any state abortion restrictions.
So, come visit me. Don’t text me you’re pregnant. Don’t mention it. Don’t even buy the test in some of these states.
Just come on up.
And I’ll take you & take care of you.
For real.
I'm very proud of this floof today for being certified as a Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog.
This covid pup has come a long way. Such an adorable, sweetheart and goof.
On this warm winter day, I finally meandered through the historic Princeton ceremony I bike by every day.
Paul
@Tulane
is buried there. I guess it was a sign that some things are meant to be.
I study human rights in part because I grew up learning about the Holocaust from a young age. I also was taught Zionism and unwavering support for Israel.
As a Jew, a human rights scholar, and a human, I do not support Israel's actions. I support Palestinians' human rights.
I’m lucky and grateful to have good, easy, and affordable healthcare as a grad student.
Graduating this spring, so I’m starting my “see every healthcare provider” before I move and have new insurance.
First workshop was a success! It was such a pleasure to (virtually) meet these folks and collect their brilliant comments and questions on my research.
Thanks to the
@jr_IOscholars
organizers and
@AudreyComstock7
for discussing!
What is better way to start your week after a long weekend than listening to
@rjschoner
's practice job talk! Today at 3pm EST! Zoom link sent via email.
my colleague Noelle McAfee, political theorist, feminist, and chair of the philosophy department is getting arrested by the Atlanta police for peacefully protesting. shame on
@EmoryUniversity
My heart breaks for Palestinians. Humanitarian crisis, genocide, immense preventable suffering.
My heart also breaks for Israelis, yearning for hostages’ return.
It’s complex, but at the heart are innocent civilians.
As Jews, we said Never Again. We have not upheld our promise.
I’ve finally decided having my bed visible in my background isn’t suitable for all zooms. So, I have moved all the best plants in my house for a jungle background vibe.
Congrats to the amazing and brilliant
@LC_Sanford
for defending his dissertation!! 🥳🥳
So proud of you and cannot wait to see what you do next as you head east to
@YaleEnvironment
this fall
I’m in a privileged position, and I’m able to eat the costs of withdrawing from APSA.
But not being able to get my conference registration fee back is absolutely ridiculous.
I had my parents save the bones from Thanksgiving turkey. For the second year, I cleaned out old veggies from the fridge and made stock.
These five quarts of turkey stock are golden perfection.
