Going through old e-mail threads and realized that 10 years ago TODAY I quit working/writing for an over-the-hill action star. He told me I was throwing away my only chance to ever become a professional screenwriter. I’ve had 5 movies come out this year. Sorry, action dude.

Never been fired from a gig, but have had a producer “go another route” and turn a thriller my partner & I did some drafts on into a “Hostel”/“Saw” gorefest with writers of that genre. That movie came out today. Curious how it went. Don’t think I can bring myself to watch it

Tried The Black List coverage service twice. First reader largely dismissed the script as it “felt like a Lifetime movie” (ironic). Second reader (seen here) seemed to enjoy it a bit more. However, both only gave it 6 out of 10. Was hoping for higher, but hey…

@jeannevb In the Lifetime world I’ve been in, they require a 9-act structure, each ending with a “cliffhanger” (for commercial breaks). I know that’s pretty specific for their - and other TV movies’ - model, but it helps to think this way to keep Act 2 steamrolling forward. #scriptchat

@matthewjanacone My whole career took off bc of a contest win. But the win wasn't what mattered (though, I won a little $, so that was nice). What mattered was the judge who liked my script and took it to a prodco who bought and produced it. So, wins are great, but not everything. #scriptchat

I know it isn't smart, but most of the time I find character backstory as I go. Often you find your story's "needs" as you dive deeper into it, then you can go back an plug that into your characters, giving them the "super powers" they need. #scriptchat
