3 year old Lillian asked to see my cross and then blessed it with a kiss prior to Confirmation Ceremony at Saint Ambrose Church in Dorchester. Her mother told me “she loves Jesus”
I lit a candle for you today at the Grotto at Notre Dame. That anyone who views this Tweet will be protected by Mary in whatever you do for Jesus her Son.
Honored to bless Sr. Augusta FSP today. This month she will be 102! She knitted that hat. I know because she made me a black one. Love and blessings sister.

Please join me in prayer today for my friend and former colleague Miriam Marston, who today will dedicate her life to God as a Consecrated Virgin Living in the World, before Archbishop Alexander Sample in Portland Oregon.
After Mass at Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome on the Ad Limina visit, and worshipping the sacred tomb, I lit a candle and said a prayer for anyone who ever sees this Tweet. It is that candle by itself on top.
Bishop Peter Rosazza, the auxiliary emeritus of Hartford, had eventful morning. He was heading to the Congregation for Education in the rain and Pope Francis saw him and offered him a ride in the papal car!
I received my vocational call 40 years ago today, on the back porch of our home seen here in this picture. 40 years ago today I decided to live my life to prepare for priesthood and I never stopped and I have never wanted anything else. I was 18.
Tomorrow we will bury Fr. John J. Connelly. 98 years old. Boston’s oldest priest and I believe our last World War II veteran priest. He was a fine theologian who studied under Bernard Lonergan and who taught theology to many priests at Saint John Seminary.
Sitting next to Danielle M. Brown, esq at the USCCB, CCHD meeting. She is a powerful Catholic voice against racism. I highly recommend inviting her to speak in your diocese and in the seminaries.
Such a special meeting with the Pope for about two hours. I was told to sit right beside him (randomly). The pictures are professional and will be published and I look forward to them but this one was somehow taken.
If the meeting in February with the Holy Father and the heads of the worldwide Bishops’ conferences results in Universal action it will be worth the wait. With many of you I feel frustrated today, but I trust reform is coming. Here, we can now help shape it.
If you have a serious complaint against a bishop, whether it be a sin of omission or commission, notify the Nuncio - don’t wait for these new procedures. We will have a third party reporting system asap but say something now.
Such a beautiful Mass at Saint Clement Parish today. It was the opening Mass of the first Vietnamese parish in the history of the Archdiocese of Boston.
Bishops wear crosses on chains. Most people don’t know that. Every now and then, people think I am wearing it for fashion reasons and have a negative reaction. Today in a drive through a young man said “Nice chain, man” and he was complimenting me. Made me laugh.
My Twitter blessing of throats reached over 90K Twitter followers with 406 retweets. Of course it’s not the same as a blessing in person but my intention was for all who saw it and I compare it to a TVMass blessing. I was especially pleased that it brought comfort to so many.
Three years ago today as
@BpRobertReed
and I were ordained bishops, my friend and her boys were watching on CTV and they decided they would lie prostrate too!
I just celebrated the 4:00 Mass by myself for the people of the parish and the intention of the Mass. I prayed for my parishioners and presented their petitions to God. I prayed for all of us and for those who are working to meet our needs. Blessings upon all of you.
My Episcopal motto “Invenimus Messiam” We have found the Messiah! comes from Saint Andrew. Here I am the bishop with that motto in the Church of St. Andrew, wearing a ring and a vestment of St. Andrew, in front of a statue of St. Andrew and holding a relic of St. Andrew!!!
Cantalamessa speaking of the Eucharist: If the woman who suffered a hemorrhage was sure that she would be healed if only she would touch the hem of Jesus’ cloak, how much more ourselves who are about to touch a good deal more than just the hem of his cloak?
Besides the surprise of a Tweet that went viral with 567,000 “likes” so far, I also had a crazy surprise of a fly getting under my zucchetto at Mass when I put it on after Holy Communion and I had to lift it up to let it go. Strange week. May your Advent bring unexpected things.
Today we established the first Vietnamese parish in the Archdiocese of Boston “Blessed Andrew Phu-Yen at Saint Clement Church. I had the honor of installing Fr. Phong Pham as pastor.
“In the beginning was the Word” The Word becoming flesh is everything. That’s why I’m very careful with words...we have to respect them, because they are that precious link to where we come from. We were created in the world with intelligibility, meaning, purpose and beauty.
I was impressed by
@KatiePrejean
McGrady at the USCCB today. A powerful witness for young people in the Church, but especially for me, an important and thoughtful voice for young women.
It was a joyful event at the Cathedral today for the ordination of Bishop Cristiano Barbosa. Cardinal Seán ordained him and Bishop Reed and I were the co-consecrators. Here I am also with Bishop Cristiano’s parents who came over from Brazil.
Today Cardinal Seán ordained 5 new priests for Boston. Later I went to the first Mass of Fr. Alphonse Hien Vu. Here we are with his parents and concelebrating priests.
Today on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, I celebrated Mass with the Carmelite fathers at the Chapel in the North Shore Mall. The Chapel is a hidden gem of our Archdiocese of Boston.
I asked her if she ever would have imagined standing at the Church door on Easter holding a gun and wearing a mask! Thanks for keeping us safe with the temperature gun Amy.
Such an honor to Confirm Brigid Coleman. In her letter to me she told me she took the name “Margaret” because St. Margaret is the patron saint of childbirth. She wanted to take the name “Rainbow Sunshine” but her Dad said it wasn’t a saints name.
Yesterday I had the honor of blessing the new edition at Saint Mary High School in Lynn
@smhlynn
. It is a fantastic upgrade to a great school. Along the way I posed for pictures and shot a basket.
I asked the children at Mass what they thought I should give up for Lent and one boy immediately said “Coffee!” The rest of them saw my reaction (like Daniel 5:6) and they all thought that was a great idea. So... coffee it is.
I installed Fr. John Wronski, SJ as pastor of Saint Ignatius of Loyola Parish on the Boston College Campus today. It was Deacon Dominic Chai, SJ’s first Mass as he was ordained yesterday
Last night I was privileged to consecrate Cliff Garvey as a diocesan hermit in Gloucester. Cliff took the new name “Brother Patrick.” Here I am with Cliff and his Spiritual Director, Fr. Mark Noonan.
Help your priest out this weekend. Nod during the homily if he makes a point that moves your spirit. It is a weird experience to preach when everyone has masks on and you have no idea if anyone is relating.
Heading to Chicago for the Pope’s retreat. Thank you for your prayers. May God inspire us this week to know what to do, or to concede, going forward; whatever is necessary going into the future. Veni Sancte Spiritus.
Honored to have Baptized two men and Confirmed six men at the MCI Shirley prison today. I was inspired by those who stepped forward and those that guided them to this.
Miller was asking about my zucchetto so I had him try it on. He liked finding out “zucchetto” comes from “little pumpkin” because of its shape and the little stem at the top.
We lost Mother Teresa Callahan O.C.D. last week, the prioress of the Danvers Carmel. Here she is in back of me as I posed with Sr. Clare whom we lost earlier this year.
Two powerhouse influential women in our Church: Sr. Nathalie Becquart, xmcj
@SrNatB
who is Undersecretary of the Synod of Bishops and M. Therese Lysaught, PhD
@ThereseLysaught
who is a bioethics professor at Loyola University.
Saint Phoebe pray for us. Romans 16:1-2. Besides, Saint Gregory the Great, today is her feast day. I celebrated Mass for the discernment of the Pope’s Commission currently studying the possibility of women deacons.
Giving retreat at Saint John’s Seminary and walked by the Cardinal O’Connell room. Thought I would revive this pic I tweeted two years ago. (You have to see the whole thing to get it)
Today is a day of Two First Communions and Three Confirmations. All great, but a special moment was Confirming Sophia and her Adaptive Class classmates.
This particular statue of St. Therese is special to me. It was originally in St. Theresa, Watertown where my mother grew up and where my parents were married. The Church closed and it moved to the Seminary with the Deaf Community.
