Hi yall. Since AI pixel art has been rampant on the internet these days, and how some people seem to have a hard time trying to identify them, I thought I'd make a small thread on how to recognize them better🧵
1.) Before going into the pixel art specific ones, AI pixel art still has the problems of regular AI art. I.e. inconsistencies like the examples below.
Before I start with this thread, I just want to preface by saying that
1. You shouldn't act hostile when accusing someone of using AI. You can politely ask someone to post an art time lapse. A real artist would always be able to proof that they are legit.
While having mixels by themselves doesn't automatically mean that a pixel art piece was made using AI, they usually are staples of ones that were generated with models that weren't programmed with pixel art in mind.
4.) Older hardware tend to struggle with how many colors they can display on screen. This caused developers to be more economical with their color palette, often even using the same shade for more than one element (sonic's dark red is both used to shade his shoes and his skin)
3.) AI pixel art has a tendency to make objects/people artificially "blocky". I assume it's to make the image look more pixelated, but it just end up looking like how Super Mario 64 would look like on the NES

AI pixel art tend to disregard having a concise palette. often having redundant colors that are close to each other, which usually look better if you you just combine them together into one shade of color.
While we don't have such limitations with modern hardware, a lot of people still tend to limit their color palettes. Often only adding new shades of color if it's needed. Even the most bloated color palettes usually feel purposeful in some way.
5.) Without going too much into theory, clusters are basically a group of pixels with the same color. The opposites of clusters are called "strays", which are stray 1x1 or 2x1. If you're not careful, you can have your piece end up looking noisy if you don't use these correctly.
From what I've seen, AI tends to add random 2 pixel cluster without reason. I assume it's to create texture, but they never end up looking quite right.
Again, before I end this thread, PLEASE do not harass your fellow artists if you suspect them of using AI. You can always politely ask them for a time lapse, or the project files, or even just the layers.
While mixels, strays, and uneconomic color palettes are features of AI art, they often are also mistakes beginner artists tend to make when they're just starting pixel art. So please be 100% sure before accusing someone of using AI.
And i also don't want people's take away from this thread is "breaking the fundamentals is bad and wrong" because I've seen genuinely amazing experimental artworks that cleverly uses mixels. I've seen strays used to make interesting textures.
some people are commenting on how obvious some of the points listed on here. this was originally made for my non-pixel artist friends that told me that they had a hard time differentiating AI pixel art. even if it's obvious for us, it might be not for others
i know it's been a thing for a while now, but can we start calling out AI pixel art? it seems to be really prominent, yet most people just brush it off "because it's just pixel art"
hi! the name's reyh. i'm a pixel artist/hobbyist chiptune musician!
due to some unforseen events, i lost access to my original account
i theres any moots i haven't folowed back, please do tell me!

the state of pixel art in mainstream media is already pretty bad. the last thing i want is for studios to cheap-out and use AI because they think they could get away with it
Artists, show me your most popular piece
the original post was lost to time (thanks el

), but i remember finding out that someone reposted it on danbooru lmao
@MinusEro
honestly the most consistent thing i've seen in AI pixel art is the use of mixels (inconsistent pixel sizes) as opposed to real pixel art that's locked to a fixed grid
first time trying out NES stuff on furnace. pretty messy and i'm too lazy to actually go look for the patches from kirby's adventure so this sound nothing like kirby at all lmao
"they've been drawing for years, there's no way they're using AI!"
the more skilled you are at drawing, the easier it is to cover your tracks.
please be carefull with AI art yall
so APPARENTLY my ABSOLUTE DUMBASS just found out that aseprite had an indexed color mode this whole time and that i never actually needed photoshop to make these kind of images
here's some quick fun stuff i did with the thing
