It's fun to think of Mara watching Blackberry. In an early draft I had a scene where Matt and Mara see a movie. It was inspired by Brief Encounter and how they meet on Saturdays after matinée films. Also Minnie and Moskowitz where Rowlands is always watching old Hollywood films.

RIP Chippy MacIntosh (2007?-2023) star of How Heavy This Hammer and Cutaway, former roommate, a tiny rescue chiweenie with a huge personality. A very special dog who stole the show whenever she was on screen and stole the hearts of everyone she met. She will be missed.

Concrete Valley opens Friday at @TIFF_NET It's a beautiful portrait of Thorncliffe Park but it's also rigorous with a level of craft and detail that this city needs. The insight found is hard-won but genuinely profound and I hope you're able to see it with an audience in Toronto.

We said goodbye to my mum’s incredible dog Ben earlier this month. He made it to the age of 17 and appeared in more than half of my movies. A very sweet and special dog with uniquely gentle temperament. This photo was taken during the shooting of Tower in 2012 by Mark Peckmezian.

We're screening a Costa and Hong double bill at @TIFF_NET tonight. As @CinemaScopeMag publishes its final issue it feels appropriate to screen two masters who were so central to it. Scope has always been a massive influence on our series and Toronto film culture. Long live Scope.

The Canadian tour of Matt and Mara continues at @CIFF . We screen again in Calgary on Sat. Last week we were at @thefilmfest in Halifax and @tiff_net . Next I’ll be in Vancouver for @VIFFest . In Oct we’re at @nouveaucinema in Montreal and the Charlottetown Film Festival in PEI.

During my Q&A with Bujalski I learned that Akerman’s the reason the Hatcher sisters are in Beeswax. Akerman street-cast Maggie Hatcher, grabbed her arm and said “you need to be in my student’s film.” Bujalski put her in his thesis then wrote Beeswax when he learned she’s a twin.

My favourite movie when I was a kid was Monty and the Holy Grail. I think it's because my dad had a copy of it on Beta and I'd rewind and watch the black knight get his arms chopped off. Kids don't have their parents VHS tapes any more, they've got the kids section on Netflix.
