Our CBs get made to look worse than they are because their GK stays deep & their pivot likes to push up aggressively, combine this with our wingers not helping our FBs a lot out wide & you have 2 players being responsible for an obscene amount of space

Personal view is that Ten Hag should be manager at the start of next season. Put him in a proper structure with a functioning recruitment team and working medical department and then see. He was a good manager last season. Can't suddenly be a bad one now.

The more I think about it, the more it partly stems from issues deeper back. DDG not very proactive > CBs unable to cover FBs due to lower starting position > midfield more at the mercy of a successful front 4 press

United press in a 4-4-1-1 with the wide players inverting to press the centre backs, but their fullbacks rarely back up the press, and this means ter Stegen will be able to clip balls out to the fullbacks OR the centre backs will have time on the ball.

DERBY v UNITED: united had a different buildup method. Due to no natural wingers, their FBs had to stretch the pitch, giving the midfielders the task of making a back 3. The positional rotation disorganised Derby’s press, the only issue is the space left behind our FBs.

Underlapping FB is a feature Ole has added to united’s game in 2020, increasing the attacking output of Shaw & AWB. This is triggered by the winger receiving wide to give the FB space inside, pushing back the opposition midfield & giving our midfielders space on the ball.

This is a common pattern of play by united. Back 3 > Rashford > [underlapping run by shaw (incomplete here)]> ball to Martial/Bruno with the other running outside of the CB. With Rashford occupying his FB by being deep, the opposition FB area can be exploited by 2/3 players.

The most common buildup shape these days is a 3-2-5/2-3-5, allowing all 5 horizontal lanes to be occupied which forces the opposition to be spread as much as possible, Solskjaer has made the according adjustments in recent weeks

This is a perfect example. Brighton’s players know what to do, why it’ll work & the ability to pull off their ideas because they’ve got the first two nailed down. We can’t show this synchrony and quality against a high press and it hurts

Look at that buildup from Brighton, it deserved a goal, so good!

Want him to stay next year as CB5, can cover RB & LB in emergencies plus he’s already shown he’s PL level. Not every academy kid that’s not a superstar needs to go on loan

Spooky how we genuinely don’t know where Phil Jones is

Line staggering in midfield - Bruno, Matic & Pogba rarely play on the same horizontal lines. This makes it easier to stretch the opposition’s block & form quick combinations (see Rashford chance created by Pogba v sheffield). Matic can also drop into the back 3 easier.

DDG discourse is so simple: - united defend poorly - DDG faces lots of shots - he’s a better at being reactive than proactive - united want to be a proactive, attacking side - they’ll concede less shots and play higher up the field, defending better - DDG becomes useless
