Golf Illustrated launched a fund for British Professionals to play in the U.S. Open and Ryder Cup in 1927. Mr. Ryder donated £400 to the fund - $35,000 in todays money. Samuel Ryder contributed more than $60,000 in today’s money to the inaugural Ryder Cup!

In the late 1800s, Samuel started selling garden seeds for 1 penny a pack out of his home. Mr. Ryder eventually generated a decent amount of wealth - enough money to finance several golf events and professionals.

This is where Samuel Ryder comes in. Samuel was allegedly donating a cup to the winning team after the match was played, but withheld the cup for a variety of reasons until the 1927 match in America. The cost of the cup £300 - $26,500 in todays money.

So, In 1921, 11 Americans sailed out of New York Harbor to compete in the British Open. But there was an idea, a one-day exhibition match against Great Britain at Gleneagles. Great Britain ended up dominating the American team.
