i'm adding only one immersive sim element to svhs: dry eyes from prolonged contact lens use. canonically, the player has had them in for too long, so you must manually blink every 3 to 5 seconds or your vision will go blurry. this feature cannot be disabled

I've been recording game footage to VHS tape to use as reference for the in-game VHS camera. I create a matching grade in Resolve and export a LUT for UE, then tweak in game - add noise, recreate border, and split luma/chroma to heavily blur/down-rez the colour channels. WIP ⬇️

I wanted #supervhs to be accurate, so I used real textures wherever possible. When I had to create stuff from scratch, I'd always try match fonts and designs etc. You can see some of that process in this timelapse texture/model of an unnecessarily detailed and pointless box

Been spending a bunch of time redoing the camera, particularly for the handheld VHS cam. I wanted it to feel really tactile and realistic, not just like a filter over the regular view. I 3D tracked some real walk/run movement which helped a lot:

the blink mechanic is physics based; time between blinks determines vision blur and duration of blink determines clearing effect. additionally if you hold your eyes closed there is a 0.001% chance of teleporting to the astral plane

You can see how much colour information is lost if you look at the little green and pink triangles, that’s why it’s important to handle luma & chroma separately. You can also see I don’t have quite the right shade of pink yet
