I fear that anti-Asian violence will be used as a pretext for more policing. But police have never been an effective response to violence born of hate, racism, or xenophobia.
So cool that the NFL effectively blacklisted Colin Kaepernick for his racial justice stances. But Aaron Rodgers can spout reckless conspiracies about HIV, Sandy Hook, etc, and continue to be one of the highest-paid players in the league.
Kyle Rittenhouse is having Thanksgiving at home. Hundreds of thousands of people can't be home because of our racist and classist money bail system. That's what I'm thinking about right now.
Bombshell from the

The Israeli gov't created fake social media accounts to bombard lawmakers with pro-war propaganda and misinformation about campus protests.
So here's the problem in a nutshell:
The right understands that public opinion is shaped. They regularly use their media apparatus to socialize unpopular/made-up ideas and turn them into "common sense." ๐งต
It's not just Walz: Minnesota Democrats are an inspiration. They won a one-seat majority and *got to work*. I have this paragraph saved on my desktop & I periodically go back & read it just for pleasure.

- Women had their hijabs removed by male officers.
- NYPD officers were overheard talking about how much they were making in overtime.
- Multiple students were hit with felony charges.
The video of Monroe County DA Sandra Doorley fleeing and berating police has gone viral, and understandably so.
But her 10+ year career as DA is filled with miscarriages of justice and abuses of power.
A quick thread ๐งต
Eric Adams: โI cannot tell you how much I start the day with telling my team, โWeโve got to follow the law, got to follow the law,โ almost to the point that I am annoying."
Yes yes, it is completely normal to frequently remind your staff not to break the law
Gov. Hochul at the Aspen Institute says Democrats in New York running for office should โjust be moderateโ โ and she describes herself as a moderate Democrat who is concerned with issues like public safety
A quick primer on crime coverage:
1) Just as people began paying close attention to the midterm elections, Fox and right-wing media outlets went all in on crime.
Democrats, in contrast, view public opinion as a natural occurrence, something to be responded to.
So, in other words, one party is dictating the weather and the other is simply adjusting its sails.
Columbia student journalists have a lot to teach some veteran reporters about the importance of not making broad generalizations or treating protesters as a monolithic group.
Budgets are moral documents. And a budget that gives millions to police for riot gear and military-grade weaponry while leaving teachers to pay for school supplies out-of-pocket is immoral any way you slice it.
Gov. Hochul calls retail theft "a break down of the social order" and promises to give more resources to state police to arrest people for retail theft and to cooperate with federal and local law enforcement on retail theft investigations.
Clearest example of this is immigration, where border crossings are at their lowest level in years, yet GOP's persistence has made it into the central election debate (even as cities are literally being wiped away by floods).
NEW: State bail reform and coronavirus-related releases from city jails are not driving this yearโs surge in shootings, the NYPDโs own data shows โ despite the insistence of department brass to the contrary.
We need candidates willing to see beyond their own elections and understand the importance of creating a united front.
Until Dems learn to tell the same story (and repeat it over and over again), the GOP is going to drag our political system further right.
More people should know what's going on with the NYS budget. Not only is Kathy Hochul trying to shoehorn in record subsidies for an NFL stadium and rollbacks to bail reformโbut also pushing the extension of a $1.7b tax break for luxury developers.
India Walton worked her way through school while raising her sons, managed 40+ nurses, became the first ED of the Fruit Belt Land Trust.
And then an editorial board today has the gall to tell her that mayor is "not an entry-level job." That's racism and sexism at its worst.
Messaging discipline is the other piece of this:
Republicans of every stripe are incredibly consistent with their message on immigration, crime, and the economy.
Democratsโmuch, much less disciplined on crime, immigration, and the economy (though very disciplined on abortion).
When Democrats defect on issues (like they're currently doing on trans rights), the GOP's message gains more resonance.
And it starts a domino effect of other Dems bending under the pressure of GOP attacks.
Dems not supporting Cori Bush's H. Res 25 should know that it's their BIPOC members who are at the greatest risk of harm from white nationalist violence.
Safety is a privilege, and they're choosing to uphold systems of white supremacy by giving their colleagues a pass.
Umm, this is a big deal.
"Some attendees discussed making political donations to Adams, as well as how the chat groupโs members could pressure Columbiaโs president and trustees to permit the mayor to send police to the campus to handle protesters..."

We must use every available method to keep New Yorkers safe โ including state of the art technologies like the Knightscope K5 security robot.
These devices will serve as an important, innovative deterrent to crime so we can keep NYC the safest big city in America.

Asian-Americans must be proactive about resisting carceral or policing solutions that put Black and brown ppl in danger while doing nothing to address the root causes of hate.
Democrats should take a lesson from Tim Walz here.
He doesnโt punch left, get caught in a defensive loop, or speak in vague abstractions.
Draws on lived experience, names the bad actors, and offers solutions.
I donโt think itโs asking for too much to have a pro-union Chief Judge, just as itโs not asking for too much to have a pro-winning NY Dem Party chair.

The makeup of Rochester City Council will be 1/3 leftists and socialists. The Buffalo Mayor-elect is a socialist.
We've watched our cities decline for decades, grow more unequal under neoliberalism.

Corporations are pushing to roll back child labor laws specifically to fill low-paying jobs in dangerous industries. Everyone should be paying attention to this.
Rep. Linda Chaney is the author of a Florida bill to let bosses make 16- and 17-year-olds work more than 30 hours a week, and let them deny teens meal breaks.
She says "This bill is about teenagers, they're 16 and 17 years old, they're driving cars, they are not children."
The largest egg producer in the U.S. saw a 600% โฌ๏ธ in profits last year (not a typo).

In 2022, Doorley was co-chair of Lee Zeldinโs campaign for NY Governor. When a man attacked Zeldin on stage, she charged him with an uncharacteristically low-level offense to allow Zeldin to use the incident to fear-monger about bail reform.
The rate of high lead tests in Buffalo is "eight times greater" than rates among children in Flint.
Can you tell me again why Byron Brown deserves to keep his job?
Judges should have been held to this standard all along.
Many Dems are finally doing what they should have done from the startโpaying close attention to judicial records.
"Why is he being held to a standard different than all the rest?" Hochul says in answering questions from reporters about LaSalle's nomination.
She said she hasn't gotten a good answer from senators.
4) So in large media markets like New York, where incidents of violent crime are still less frequent than Oklahoma, voters began identifying crime as their top issue.
