I remember the day after we were in court. Not even 24 hours after I sent my abuser to prison one of the first comments I saw on Facebook was from a staff member from my former church who said “now it’s time for these girls to forgive him”. That stung.

Forgiveness is complex. Abuse is complex. Those who push you to forgive past abuse don’t understand either. And it’s unlikely they’ll work to understand if their interest in your forgiveness has to do with their comfort.

My youth pastor raped me for 3 years when I was in highschool. He told me not to tell anyone & I naively said I wouldn’t as long as he would stop & not hurt anyone else. By the time I spoke to police there was 7 of us that came forward. Abusers will never change.

I watched #AthleteA today. It brought me right back. When asked why USAG didn’t report Nassar’s abuse they said they erred on the side of Nassar. When my pastor was asked why he didn’t report my abuser he said “I erred on the side of mercy.” This is systematic abuse.
